Succumbing to Temptation

The television commercial makes it sound like quite a payday: up to $10,000 in a day! Sound tempting? Well, you probably won't see the interest rate in tiny print that flashes on the screen for less than a second. Nor will you be aware that this company charges interests rates ranging from 139.22% to 194.70%. Imagine that, up to 200% interest, and all that money could be yours today. Good luck paying off that loan!
A similar thing happens with temptation and sin. It flashes before us with its appeal and its promises. But the fine print is easy to miss. Adam and Eve missed it, and the "interest rate" in their case was a whopper. King David came to find out how high the interest rate is on sin. Judas had 30 pieces of silver flash before his eyes, and he took the deal. But it cost him so much more than he ever anticipated.

Build Your Church Upon the Rock!

Megachurch pastor Matt Chandler told ministry leaders at a conference in North Carolina on Wednesday that churches seeking to be both fruitful and faithful must first and foremost be built upon the person and work of Jesus Christ.
"Ministry begins at the laying of the foundation of Christ Jesus," Chandler told those in attendance and watching live via the Internet during the Advance13 conference in Raleigh. "So all ministry that is faithful and eventually will be fruitful finds its roots in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and where there is ministry built on something other than that, you are not dealing with Christian ministry."

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus previewed the results of the report in a Sunday interview on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Homeschooled and Happy

A first-of-its-kind study conducted by the National Jewish Health (NJH) in Denver, Colo., reveals homeschoolers are happier, healthier and perform better academically and socially because they get more sleep.
For more than 20 years, researchers have studied the sleeping patterns of teenagers, especially high school students who wake up early for extra-curricular practices and then go to bed late after completing their homework.

Out of Wedlock

The age at which men and women in America marry is now at historic heights, and as a result the number of children born out of wedlock has also increased, says a new study by a group of family researchers, who have found that 48 percent of all first births are happening outside of marriage.
On average, women are marrying at age 27, and men at 29 – and the average age is still climbing due to economic and cultural reasons. At the same time, the age at which women have children is also increasing, but not nearly as quickly as the delay in marriage, according to the report, "Knot Yet: The Benefits and Costs of Delayed Marriage in America," released Friday by the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia and collaborators.

Worried About Money

I have informally counseled hundreds of ministers about financial matters. My background lends itself to such interaction. I have a business degree with a double major in finance and economics. I served as a corporate banker before answering the call to vocational ministry . . . . The purpose of sharing my brief bio is not to brag, but to explain why ministers gravitate toward me on financial matters. Hundreds of ministers have sought my advice. I am humbled and happy to share my knowledge with these servants of God.

In Defense of Faith and Rights

Have you pastors had enough of the rhetoric from those within our media who preach that owning a gun is detrimental to us as a nation? If so, please get in line, because it starts here with me. I'm big, black, bald, bad, and love to hunt. Our very heritage, sovereignty, and freedom we all enjoy are under attack, and the time has come to rise up and say, we are many in numbers, we won't be stopped, and it starts with us.

A Good Old-Fashion Talk

Is it just me, or do you agree that something valuable has been lost now that a huge portion of human communication is so impersonal? Are we forgetting how to relate to one another the old-school way: face to face and person to person?
The other day a man stepped into the elevator beside me. Even though I was the other passenger in the space, I moved slightly to make room. Then I said, "How you doing today?" I think it was this simple gesture that made what turned out to be a huge difference.

Running Away From God's Love

We see it happen everyday, where people walk away from the ones who love them the most. It is mind-boggling. Why would anyone leave a situation where he or she is loved so deeply? And yet, it occurs time and time again all over the world. It is a universal problem.
There is the teenage boy who rejects his mother's wisdom and chooses to run with a gang and ends up dead or in prison. There is the husband or wife who allows their heart to become infected with a dangerous desire, and the family is torn apart, where once love reigned supreme. And there is the Jew or the Gentile who is loved dearly by the Lord but refuses to accept the love of God in the Person of Jesus Christ. It doesn't make sense that man would choose to pursue that thing or that relationship which is based on the lust of his eyes rather than the love of his Creator.
