SPRING ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - A Christian university in Michigan has fired a male faculty member who legally changed his name and is now living as a woman.
The Reverend John Nemecek, a Baptist minister, served a Grand Rapids church before being hired 16 years ago at Spring Arbor University, west of Detroit.
Last Friday, a judge approved Nemecek's petition to change his name to Julie Marie Nemecek.
Nemecek wears a wig and dresses as a woman but has no plans to undergo sex-change surgery.
The 55-year-old Nemecek says she - as she prefers to be called - is not homosexual and is attracted to only one woman: Joanne, to whom she has been married for 35 years.
Spring Arbor University says Nemecek was released for failing to honor the contract they had agreed upon. Nemecek has filed a gender-discrimination complaint against the school and the two sides are scheduled to meet next week in mediation.
