Survey: More Americans Have Negative View of Immigrants

By Michelle Vu|Christian Post Reporter

BGCT and the Baptist social service group Buckner International announced late last month their partnership to create the Immigration Service and Aid Center (ISAAC). The Center is the first nationwide effort by local church-based ministries to help immigrants become U.S. citizens.

Meanwhile, other Christian groups advocating for immigration reform policies hope that new laws can put a human face on an issue affecting 12 million illegal immigrants in the country. Some metropolitan churches across the nation have even offered their buildings as sanctuaries to protect illegal immigrants from law enforcement officers.

Despite the ongoing debate and concern over the issue, a comprehensive immigration reform bill is unlikely to be tackled by Congress until after the presidential election next year.

The White House had spearheaded an effort to push through an immigration reform bill last month but failed when the Senate could not garner the 60 votes needed to limit debate and move it towards final passage.

“Legal immigration is one of the top concerns of the American people and Congress’ failure to act on it is a disappointment,” a grim faced Bush said, according to AP, after hearing news of the bill’s defeat. “A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn’t find common ground. It didn’t work.”

The recent Gallup Poll survey interviewed 2,388 adults nationwide, including 868 non-Hispanic whites, 802 non-Hispanic blacks, and 502 Hispanics.

It is important to differentiate between legal and illegal immigration and this article failed to do that. However, I agree with everyone who is against illegal immigration. Unfortunately, besides the illegal immigrants, the ones benefiting from this are the wealthy companies who like cheap labor. The countries in Latin America benefiting from and encouraging illegal immigration should be ashamed of their inability to provide jobs and their horrible corruption.

Why do God's people rebel against governments that He set up for their good (Romans 13)? God never called anyone to emigrate illegally. It is essential that Christians have respect for the rule of law, which should only be broken if positive law directly commands what God forbids, or directly forbids what God commands. Not only are we scripturally commanded to "render to Caesar what is Caesar's" (obedience with the above narrow exceptions) but it also earns respect for us among unbelieving citizens. Quakers were originally exempted from the draft because of their character for obedience in all other areas of the law. The Amish were able to be exempted from mandatory schooling laws in part because the Amish children did not need school to keep them away from crime, as no Amish person that anyone knew of had ever been convicted of a serious crime. Obedience to the laws in areas where we have discretion is what will preserve our religious liberty in these increasingly secular times. If Christians encourage lawlessness, we will ourselves be outlawed. I might be for the humanitarian cause of amending the laws for future immigrants, but I am not going to take a position of ignoring the crimes of those who have broken our laws.

I agree with dhster. I believe that most Americans are upset with "illegal" immigration. I am not opposed to those who wish to come here but they must do it in the confines of U. S. law. If they break our laws, they should be sent home. Illegals should have no rights in our country because they have broken our laws. Trying going to Mexico as an illegal, you will end up in jail because you have no rights under Mexican law. I think another reason the American people are upset is that many immigrants, not necessarily Hispanics are coming here and not assimulating to the culture, refusing to learn the language. I've been in some stores and felt like a foreigner because it seems like NO one speaks English anymore!!!

It would have made more sense to explain that most people are against "illegal" immigration which is ruining our country in so many ways. After all, these people are not innocent as they know that they are breaking our laws by entering under stealth and using forged documents to gain work and thereby stealing jobs from legal immigrants and citizens.
