Brownback, Huckabee Resonating Among Evangelicals

By Nathan Black|Christian Post Reporter

Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback is reaching out aggressively to communities, including influential evangelical leaders, weeks ahead of the Aug. 11 straw poll in Ames, Iowa.

Presidential hopeful Sam Brownback speaks during one of the stops for his 27-city tour across Iowa on Friday, July 20, 2007.

The Kansas senator who describes himself as a "bleeding heart conservative" met with more than 15 evangelical pastors in West Des Moines this week and said religious conservatives are moving in his direction as they become aware of his position opposing abortion and gay marriage.

"It's typical in an election that people hold back and want to get a good feel for the candidate," said Brownback, according to The Associated Press. "Now we're getting within eyeshot of Aug. 11 and they're breaking and a lot of them are breaking our way."

And the evangelical Christian community is an essential part of his plan as he looks to finish strong in the straw poll. He says his "pro-life/whole-life message" is resonating with evangelicals.

"I think it's critical and I think we're doing pretty well. We are reaching out aggressively to a number of communities and the evangelical is a key one of them," said Brownback, according to AP.

Fellow GOP hopeful Mike Huckabee also expressed confidence that undecided voters are leaning toward his direction and agrees that the shopping period for candidates is nearly over.

"They are looking for a candidate who stands for what they believe," said Huckabee to IowaPolitics.com. "People are starting to realize they are the difference. A couple of months ago people were asking what we would do for them, and now they are asking what they can do to help us. They surveyed the top three and looked at the fascination with their celebrity status. They are now coming to our events, listen and walk away ready to buy."

When Huckabee and Brownback entered the presidential race, they were largely unknown by the American public. Recent polls, however, indicate more people are hearing about the second-tier Republican candidates. A recent Pew survey found that 48 percent of Republican voters say they have heard of Huckabee, up from 32 percent a few months ago; and 40 percent of Republican voters say they have heard of Brownback, also a jump from 32 percent.

Some evangelicals show confidence in Brownback and believe more people just need to become aware of him.

Nick Bal of Walnut Creek Evangelical Church in West Des Moines said, "People just need to know about him," according to AP.

Brownback has landed headlines in Iowa, which Brownback says is a perfect place for second-tier candidates to break through to the national consciousness. The GOP hopeful hopes to use the straw poll next month as a springboard toward a caucus success, as reported by The Ottumwa Courier.

Leading Republican candidates Rudy Giuliani and Sen. John McCain are skipping the straw poll and while Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is expected to finish first in the poll, Brownback is eyeing a strong finish, perhaps second place or even a win.

well, i like the KJV, I have several. However, I would respectfully disagree that it is closer to the original manuscripts. I have read the arguments for the KJV using the most "accurate" greek manuscripts, but I have also read good counter arguments(I will not present them here as I am only allowed so many characters in my post).

Nevertheless, I would use the KJV to push any essential doctrine in Christianity as it is a good translation. I also would have to disagree pretty heavily (respectfully of course) with the KJV-only folks, simply because those in China can't read the KJV etc. We simply must go to the oldest and best manuscripts available(and there are plenty).

We need a strong, but compassionate leader, one who is not afraid to let his faith shine and be an example to the nation. We are in this world, but we are not of this world and yet we still have a responsibility to represent God to this world! Remember, Daniel, in a captive nation was put in a high position; and Joseph also, was placed by God as second in command to Pharaoh! So, it is the LORD who places people in their positions, whether they recognize God or not!
    Glory to you Lord God!

The candidate that is going to get my vote is one who calls upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ! Who lives the walk and not just talks the talk! I want to see a person who puts God first in their life. When you're putting God first, then you move from that position. We need a leader who recognizes Almighty God!

DannyPoo-broadcast networks?,I beleve that only covers the signals sent out such as would be picked up by rabbit ears, does this cover standard cable as well since almost all broadcasts are ether sateilight or cable, there hasnt been a change whatso ever that ive noticed,
    ::end quote::

Generally broadcast networks covers the rabbit ears stations. (ABC, NBC, CBS) etc. Although I would have to look furthur into it to determine if it possibly covers more than that? And the bill that was signed into law, increased the fines against networks that violate fcc rules on language/violence/ and etc..

However, the reason a noticable change may not be percieved is because the networks make so much more than what they are fined(hence the reason fines were increased). I believe and hope, we continue to increase these fines.

Governor Mike Huckabee is a very good communicator on his feet and did not flinch a bit when he was asked a question about what he believes about origins that was intended to trap him. He did not hesitate when he said that He believes that God created this earth and universe. Ususally governors do must better in main presidential elections than sentators or mayors. Huckabee is also a minister.

wrhalver, agreed, we don't want one-issue conservatives. i don't know about Huckabee(I havent fully researched his history) but I know Brownback has made pushes in other areas as well to quote from his website.

    ----
I introduced the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2006 and was pleased to see the President sign it into law. The Act increased fines on broadcast networks that air obscene and indecent material during the hours children are most likely to be watching. Shielding our children from the violence, obscenity, and indecency in today’s media continues to be one of my top priorities. I have also introduced a bill that would promote greater accuracy and transparency in the rating of video games. Accurately educating parents about the content of the media they bring into their homes is a key part of this process.
In addition to these threats, I remain concerned about the proliferation of pornography in our culture. The commoditization of the human person through pornography is a scourge upon our civilization and one of the most insidious threats to the stability of our families. I held a hearing in 2006 where we examined the detrimental effect pornography has on children and families. I will continue the fight to protect families from a variety of cultural threats.

Opposing abortion and gay marriage is good, but nothing to get excited about.

But if these candidates would also go after Fornication and Adultery, then I might get out of my seat.

shanevanderhart, I think those are fair reasons to switch from Brownback to Huckabee. I would not be opposed in any way to seeing Huckabee get ahead of Brownback(even though I currently support brownback) from what I can see from your blog. Huckabee is another strong Conservative. I will check him.

I switched from being a Brownbacker to support Governor Huckabee. You can read my reasons why on my blog at http://shanevanderhart.blogspot.com/2007/07/switching-camps.html

Brownback is desperate and has demonstrated he will do anything to get elected. Unbeknown to the public he severely compromised his values and beliefs making backdoor deals with the Tahirih Justice Center and other left leaning groups trying t to attract their vote.

On January 27, 2007 Senator Brownback worked together with the Tahirih Justice Center
manipulating Vatican Radio to produce a very one sided report called "Mail Order Bride Nightmares" with shocking lies and hysterical antics slandering American men who date foreigners as "often sexual predators, rapists or even pedophiles…many are premeditated torturers". Fortunately a "mole" within Brownback's campaign staff contacted
myself and others at Online Dating Rights and we provided conclusive evidence conclusive that Brownback's/ Tahirih Justice broadcast contained shocking lies and numerous inaccuracies. Two days after the broadcast was initially aired Radio Vatican concurred with our assessment and cancelled Senator Brownback's broadcast.

If Senator Brownback was willing to deceive the Vatican one must wonder how much he is trying to deceive the public and media during his presidential campaign.

Professor X, LOL it would be interesting to see a Huckabee - Brownback ticket, I know I would support it. I have been financially supporting Brownback here and there with the small amount of money I have, because he has firmly supported and continues to support family values.
