Survey: Christians Worldwide Too Busy for God

By Audrey Barrick|Christian Post Reporter

Christians worldwide are simply becoming too busy for God, a newly released five-year study revealed.

In data collected from over 20,000 Christians with ages ranging from 15 to 88 across 139 countries, The Obstacles to Growth Survey found that on average, more than 4 in 10 Christians around the world say they "often" or "always" rush from task to task.

Busyness proved to be the greatest challenges in Japan, the Philippines, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Indonesia. Christians in Uganda, Nigeria, Malaysia and Kenya were least likely to rush from task to task. But even in the less-hurried cultures, about one in three Christians report that they rush from task to task. In Japan, 57 percent agreed.

The busy life was found to be a distraction from God among Christians around the globe.

About 6 in 10 Christians say that it's "often" or "always" true that "the busyness of life gets in the way of developing my relationship with God." Christians most likely to agree were from North America, Africa and Europe. By country, Christians in South Africa, Nigeria, Canada, Singapore, Ireland, Philippines, the United States, and the United Kingdom, are more distracted from God, respectively, than those in other countries.

While across gender lines, busyness afflicts both men and women, the distraction from God was more likely to afflict men than women in every surveyed continent except North America, where 62 percent of women reported busyness interfering with their relationship with God compared to 61 percent of men.

By profession, pastors were most likely to say they rush from task to task (54 percent) which adversely also gets in the way of developing their relationship with God (65 percent).

"It's tragic. And ironic. The very people who could best help us escape the bondage of busyness are themselves in chains," said Dr. Michael Zigarelli, associate professor of Management at the Charleston Southern University School of Business who conducted the study.

Managers, business owners, teachers and salespeople were among Christians most likely to say they rush from task to task. And professionals whose busyness interferes with developing their relationship with God include lawyers (72 percent), managers (67 percent), nurses (66 percent), pastors (65 percent), teachers (64 percent), salespeople (61 percent), business owners (61 percent), and housewives (57 percent).

"The accelerated pace and activity level of the modern day distracts us from God and separates us from the abundant, joyful, victorious life He desires for us," said Zigarelli.

While the study does not explain why Christians are so busy and distracted, Zigarelli described the problem among Christians as "a vicious cycle" prompted by cultural conformity.

"[I]t may be the case that (1) Christians are assimilating to a culture of busyness, hurry and overload, which leads to (2) God becoming more marginalized in Christians’ lives, which leads to (3) a deteriorating relationship with God, which leads to (4) Christians becoming even more vulnerable to adopting secular assumptions about how to live, which leads to (5) more conformity to a culture of busyness, hurry and overload. And then the cycle begins again."

Zigarelli, who believes busyness and distraction may be a global pandemic, suggested breaking the cycle by "re-ordering our thinking," including "the way we think about who God is and how He wants us to live our lives."

The Obstacles to Growth Survey was conducted on 20,009 Christians – the majority of whom came from the United States, from December 2001 to June 2007. With small sample sizes (less than 30 people) used in Germany, Ireland, Mexico and Japan, Zigarelli urges caution when drawing conclusions about those countries.

laforte2007, Do you beleive in the ressurrection of the saints,? I guess not because the ressurrection of the saints and the rapture are one and the same. to say there is no rapture at all puts you against the clear teaching of the Bible, and maybe makes you out to be catholic.

1-thess 4:17 declares, " Then we which are alive and remain shall be " caught up " together with them in the clouds,to meet the Lord in the air,and so shall we ever be with the Lord." Thats Rapture. like it or not, agree with it or not, The Bible says there will be a catching away for the True Church.

Paul said, " comfort one another with these words." They are indeed a comfort to me. the song writer said, " soon and very soon we are going to see the King .

another song writer said, " Some glad morning when this life is over I'll fly away, Praise God, The Scripture declare, " Let God be true, and every man a liar.. sir to disagree on the time of the Rapture is one thing and a legitimate argument, But to say there is no Rapture at all, is quite another thing, Paul said, " make sure you are in the Faith. We are not appointed to God's wrath, but to escape it. Luke 21:34-36 says it comes upon all them that dwell on the whole earth so we must be removed before His wrath. The rapture happens by the seventh seal in Revelation 7:9, fulfilling the promised escape in Luke 21:34-36. If you read *all* the relevant scriptures in the King James Bible, a pre-wrath rapture is clear. Until I stopped busying myself and started studying God's Word, I was confused and lost in this matter. God has not left us in darkness!

artm-I implore you please, please,if you have a strongs exhaustive concordance, please use it,with your original king james bible,if you go to the greek and disect the scriptures used you can plainly see the truth of the matter, there is no rapture,God has christians here on earth to do his will, untill his return, when does he return.at the start of the 1000yr,befor this anti christ is doing his thing,Jesus returns, with thoese who have died in christ,we who are alive will be changed into our spiritual bodys,we dont go anywhere.Jesus kingdom is on the earth, since He is God,therefor where GOD is there is heven also .christians use the rapture as a security blanket, thinking they will be excused from the on going work that has to be done,if you follow the subject in scripture, keep in mind the object being talked about then you can understand the work needing to be done, the lost dont know, who will tell them if christians are gone.

Exo 35:2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you a holy day, a sabbath of rest to Jehovah. Whoever does work in it shall be put to death.

God only asks for one day, and He's quite serious about it.

Carry a small picture of Jesus with you. Take a small piece of paper and write 'Jesus' on it and place it in a pocket, handbag, wallet, on your dash, under your bed pillow, on your bathroom mirror... anywhere. Perhaps when you see it, you think of our Dear Lord and Redeemer and send up a quick "hello Lord, and thank you for my next breath!!" Think of all the times you could pray: during the commute, when a child is napping, during a lunch break, while washing dishes, folding clothes, mowing the lawn, during a bout of insomnia... the more you do this, the more you'll find yourself with more time to do it, and you might have more peace in your life. You can pretty much guarantee that God is not in the rushing around. How did God meet Elijah? Not in the earthquake, not in the thunder, but in the soft still voice. In the silence (I know that I am paraphrasing that account poorly)!! God will provide but we have to ask Him.

    greetings,

we are creatures of great nerve. while we expect GOD to be at our beck and call whenever we need something, we certainly don't want to interupt our busy lives for HIM!

We are too busy to meet Jesus every day. We wouldn't notice tribulation when it comes. The love of earthly lifestyle, the desire to work hard for more money and to impress people is a deadly snare.

Many in the Yacub 7 Pagan Sun Cult say the widespread Earthen Christian's neglet of God is what has led to His environmental abandonment of them and increased incidents of basal & squamous cell skin cancers and melanomas. It appears the hearts of the sons are turned to their fathers.

re;rapture, there is no rapture, this cannot be found-within the context of the greek, following the topics and subject-spoken about, the dead pesons spirit&soul return to god who gave it,they are where God is,the rest of us await christs return, but first the anti-christ will reveal himself, this brings in the 1000 year reign,a sinking ship doesnt repare itself, thoes who christ brings with him are changed already,we are changed and continue the work here in the changed body,

A few Sundays back, my pastor read an excerpt from a 1960's newspaper article, in which the author speculated about the lifestyles of 21st-Century Americans. If I remember the story correctly, the author surmised that most of Americans would only have to work 20 hours or less per week, due to vastly improved technologies.

I laughed out loud when my pastor said that, and I could tell from the chuckles around me that my fellow congregants felt the same. The "improvements" in technology, though meant to free us from time-consuming tasks, have done nothing more than add to our workload ... and that's not even counting the poor folks who have to REPAIR our "technological advances"!
