Huckabee, Brownback Unfazed by Iowa Straw Poll Loss

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

Republican presidential contenders Mike Huckabee and Sam Brownback downplayed their losses in the Iowa Straw Poll this past weekend, both expressing hope for a stronger show in the future.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the poll with 4,516 votes, or 31.5 percent, but Huckabee said he was not too disappointed that he came in second with 2,587 votes or 18.1 of the voters.

“It wasn’t just that we surprised people with a second showing, it’s that we did it with so few resources,” said Huckabee on Sunday, according to The Associated Press. “This really was feeding the 5,000 with two fish and five loaves.”.

The former Arkansas governor, who is also an ordained Baptist minister, said while Romney spent millions and months of effort on the event, Huckabee’s campaign had little money and spent less than $100,000 on the straw poll.

Meanwhile, Brownback came in third with 2,192 votes or 15.3 percent. The Kansas senator said his third-place finish gave him “a ticket on board to the caucuses,” according to AP.

Although still relatively unknown to the majority of Americans, Republican presidential contenders Huckabee and Brownback have increasingly emerged as favorites among evangelicals. Both candidates share the same conservative values as many evangelicals – both are pro-life and against same-sex “marriage.”

Most American evangelicals, however, have not cemented their allegiance to a particular candidate yet, noting that the election is still more than a year away.

In addition, some evangelicals are considering lending support to Romney, who also shares many of their conservative Christian values. Many, however, have found it difficult to overlook the former Massachusetts governor’s affiliation with Mormonism.

The Iowa Straw Poll had low voter turnout; some 23,600 people voted in the straw poll eight years ago, but only about 14,300 participated on Saturday, according to AP.

Moreover, some of the top Republican candidates such as former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) decided to skip the event.

“It is a win,” said David Yepsen, political columnist with The Des Moines Register, according to CNN.

“But it is somewhat shallow, because his big opponents didn’t show up. What does it mean to get in the ring and your opponents don’t even show up,” added Yepsen.

The Iowa Straw Poll has no official effect on the presidential primaries but rather it is a test of a presidential contender’s organizational strength in Iowa. A straw poll win can be very beneficial to a candidate by propelling them more into the spotlight and adding momentum to their campaign.

The Iowa Democratic Party does not have a similar event.

Oh yes, just what we need: another president who lives in a bubble and is ignorant enough to believe the earth is only 6K years old. Neither one of these clowns is capable of even the tiniest bit of critical thinking. Just what we need, someone who will lead us proudly, the rest of the way back to the dark ages.

As a Catholic voter I feel that both are strong candidates. For me it will come down to who has the better chance of winning. At the moment Huckabee seems to be the better option, he seems more like a Reagan candidate with his views and the people he has around him. However, if his showing in the straw poll doesn't turn into funds then the momentum should switch back to Brownback. Regardless both respect each other and have similar goals.

The fact that Brownback bought voters should be no surprise; He has a long history of ethics violations getting involved with evasive indivuals/ groups to raise money. It was Brownback who got caught receiving $42, 000 in “dirty” money from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The corruption doesn't end there….The conservative Brownback has a suspicious relationship with the Tahirih Justice Center a radical Iranian American religious extremist organization aligned with the NOW's leftist anti- Christian / pro abortion / pro same sex marriage agenda. Brownback claims the Baha'i faith inspired Tahirih are “frontline experts” spending some money helping abused women and spending greatly on questionable lobbying efforts and Public Advocacy not itemized on their annual report.

Brownback's relationship with NGO's reeks of corruption and appears to be indicative of a huge ethics scandal involving women's groups lobbying excessively while getting tax free status, Federal grant money and donations to various politicians. Senator Cantwell (Brownback's co- sponsor of IMBRA) received the most amount of money from women's groups than any other Senate candidate. NGO's that give political contributions often receive Federal grants in return worth 20 times more… there is absolutely no Federal government oversight here!

The International Marriage Broker Regulation Act that Brownback sponsored was based upon hysteria and emotion that American men who date foreign women are serials rapists and abusers despite an INS study that showed a 1% abuse rate.… A fraudulent waste of taxpayers money designed to help Brownback and his radicals NGO's make money.

Mike Huckabee is wonderful!!!! I'm thrilled he is getting more attention now. He's an outspoken Christian man but has a way about him that makes him appealing to non-Christians and even non-Republicans. He's just very honest, light-hearted, and well-spoken which is so rare in politics these days. I highly suggest that checking him out especially since his amazing showing in the straw poll. (Romney spent at least $2 million campaigning in Iowa for the straw poll while Huckabee spent only about $58 thousand. It's VERY impressive that Huckabee was able to get as many votes as he did with such a low budget.) I think he may just have a chance! I'm certainly praying for him!

Polls have may too much say over the outcome of these elections. Considering the debates, Romney was just alright, nothing special and a little too cookie-cutter, like Bush. If a Republican victory happens, Romney will have nothing to do with it. But here's this "poll" that puts him at the top of the pack, and it's not even 2008 yet. Now he shoots up in popularity because a choice group of Republican Hawkeyes say so? I'm tired of learning who's going to win before one single American has seen a ballot. Instead I am watching Unity08.com, because they poll everybody, all at once and regardless of the party or location. They're noiminating a candidtate from a wider spectrum than AMES.
