New Life Church Overwhelmingly Approves Ted Haggard's Successor

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

Colorado's largest megachurch overwhelmingly approved a suburban Dallas pastor to succeed ousted leader Ted Haggard as senior pastor.

More than 95 percent of members of New Life Church in Colorado Springs voted Monday in support of Brady Boyd, who preached his third and final sermon Sunday as he auditioned for the top pastor post.

Nearly a year after the firing of church founder Haggard over a sex-and-drugs scandal that shocked both the church and the nation, New Life attendance has declined and the now 10,000-member church is looking to bounce back and move toward a bright future.

"We're grateful to Brady for his willingness to serve our church family and we're grateful to God for sustaining us over the last 10 months. We look forward to a bright future serving our community and loving one another," said associate pastor Rob Brendle, according to The Associated Press.

Boyd, 40, had been an associate senior pastor at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, another well known megachurch, and said he was ready to be a senior pastor even if it meant taking up the challenge of rebuilding the reputation of New Life.

"This is a great day for New life Church. All of us are excited about writing the next chapter together. God has great plans for New Life and for Colorado Springs, and my family and I are humbled that we get to be a part of this great team," said Boyd in a statement.

And New Life congregants have been anticipating a new start.

"He's a breath of fresh air," said 10-year member Jack Hall, according to The Denver Post. "He's an answer to a prayer. He's the real deal."

In his final audition on Sunday, Boyd preached to thousands about his insecurities as a leader – a sermon that was well received by the New Life congregation.

"I'm not going to hide my humanity from you," he said to applause, according to the local newspaper. "I'm human. I'm flawed. I'm a work in progress."

"But on Tuesday morning, the sun is going to come up out of the eastern sky," Boyd said. "And on Tuesday, no matter what happened, I am going to be ruled by God's peace."

He was the only final candidate asked to try out for senior pastor at New Life.

Congregants showed an appreciation for his openness and honesty. And associate pastor Brendle said the staff likes Boyd's authenticity.

Boyd is New Life's second leader in 23 years, replacing Haggard, who was fired after a former male prostitute accused the pastor last year of paying him for sex for three years and also buying methamphetamine. In addition to leaving New Life, Haggard was also forced to resign as president of the National Association of Evangelicals.

In April, Haggard moved to Phoenix as part of his severance package from New Life Church, which included a year's salary of $138,000. He plans to earn a master's degree in counseling at the University of Phoenix and has recently asked supporters for financial assistance while he and his wife pursue their studies. Haggard predicts it will take two years for them to have "adequate earning power again," he wrote in an e-mail sent last week to KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs.

While apperances may suggest some of things you are saying robinhooud- I think that it is important to understand that it is not for us to judge especially when we do not have the whole story. I personally have been to New Life Church and I found everything to be very Bible based. While some of the things that go on may look seeker sensitive the message is not. You can use certain lures to create an environment where the lost feel welcome and make a relavent atmosphere without compromising your message. The times have changed that old hymns and monotone messages are not going to speak to current generation. All the while, the upcoming generation is hungry for something real. I agree that we should definately not let culture dictate where we go as followers of Christ but that doesn't mean that we can't be relavent and use things that will speak to the people we are trying to reach.
It is important that we do not judge an entire church based off of one person's sin. We need to be focusing on praying for New Life that it would continue to grow and the lost would continue to be saved despite what happened.

Nijjhar, by visiting your website I can see that you come from a different perspective than myself. While I do not agree with your statements on your site as I do not believe salvation to be reached by intellectual means (gnosticism) but by faith. Now I use my intelligence to bring me to the point where I was able to accept Christ through faith. By chance have you heard of Ravi Zacharias? http://www.rzim.org/ I find his logic and reason to be very sound. I find reincarnation to be contrary to the teachings of Jesus as the teachings of Jesus forces us to reject multiple chance of coming back into this world. Reading your site, shikism believes in reincarnation. Also, as best as I can tell, God in the Bible is not the God of Islam and other various religions. Again coming from your point of viewsand culture I would highly suggest Jesus Among Other Gods by Ravi Zacharias, and also Reincarnation by Mark Albrecht. Also these websites provide some arguments dealing with reincarnation. While they are arguing for Christianity, I still believe they pose some good questions. http://www.issuesetc.org/resource/archives/gudel.htm and http://www.comparativereligion.com/reincarnation.html#worldreligions

I am not here to bash your thinking but like yourself I also thought that there has to be a unity among all religions as they all wish for peace and love but the problem is sin. And in all the major religions besides Christianity it does not satisfy. God is personable and not just a formless something in the ether (He became flesh through his Son Jesus) and I do talk with God everyday and I just know Him, otherwise I am the world's craziest person. I would like you to know Him too and not in a blind faith kind of way as I don't believe in blind faith but real faith.

Congregations that gather for entertainment, seeker-sensitive promotional staff...will either lose the pastor due to lack of prayer, or their faith entirely. Back to business, youth camps with rock music, Sundays with rock music, small groups with loads of entertainment. And a nice paycheck for all the pastors who dont get the meaning of the word "pastor".

In Jesus, the way to Christianity that produces Workers is Ask, Seek and Knock. Ask questions if you have doubts in your heart. First your questions may not make sense but soon God would lead you to ask sensible questions and sensible answers. The Bible tells you Way of life but the New Testament being the New untouched Cloth, the Gospel or His Word that is received through revelations by the twice born is patched with the Old Testament, the Old Cloth, the Scriptures or the Letters that had holes, corruptions, they are not compatible. So, you need to be careful. In the old testament which imparts moral laws, you have "sin" that is transgression of the moral laws whereas in the New Testament, it is the blasphemy/hypocrisy that originates from heart and it is against Holy Spirit that counts. In an ideal Church, the Bishops prepared the congregation morally sound and the Roving Apostles whose praises lied with God used to visit such Churches to Sow the Seed of His Word and to clarify any doubts about Scriptures. Today's Churches do not meet such criteria and the Bishops and Clerics being the hirelings of Mammon keep their congregation happy through sugar coated tablets of falsehoods. Such Churches have disciples whilst the twice born Churches where there is Fellowship and they discuss the New Testament in spirit, we have Laborers who after the Baptism of Christ Jesus in Holy Spirit become the Roving Preacher called "Workers". It is the Workers who Train the Laborers in the Vineyard of God as Christ Jesus did to His 12 Laborers. By the Last Supper, they had become the fully trained Workers that a stranger would not know which of them was the Real Christ Jesus and they had to hire Judas Iscariot to point out.

The present Churches are far away from the Narrow Road that is for the Solitaries and they are happy treading the Wide Road that leads to hell.

Although Gospel is as simple as ABC, yet it is not for every one. You need a New Skin to receive it. New Skin means a heart that is unbiased as of a little child. For more details, please visit my web site:- www.nijjhar.freeserve.co.uk/sikhism.htm

Our church leaders are under attack from the devil and a a couple of them have allowed themselves to become entangled in sin. It's unthinkable that spiritual leaders in megachurches in America should succumb so easily to illicit sex and drugs. News this week about the impending divorce of Randy and Paula White is as shocking as it is frightening. More than ever, our spiritual leaders need our prayers. The credibility of the gospel they preach gets a severe test each time one of them takes a fall.

It was a balmy California evening. I had gone for a jog before I was to speak at a leadership conference. I still can't recall how I got there, but I found myself sitting on a curb
