GOP Scandals, Presidential Race Trouble Evangelicals

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

A string of recent scandals with ties to the Republican Party has its strong support base, the evangelical community, saying its vote is not guaranteed if the politicians don’t realign their values with conservative Christians in America.

Senator Larry Craig, R-Idaho, left, speaks to reporters, with his wife Suzanne, Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 28, 2007, in Boise, Idaho. Under fire from leaders of his own party, Larry Craig, accused of lewd conduct in a men's room, declared Tuesday, 'I am not gay' and said the only thing he did wrong was plead guilty to a criminal charge.

Senator Larry Craig (R-Idaho)’s alleged solicitation of sex in a men’s restroom added to a growing list of sex and monetary scandals which includes Sen. David Vitter (R-Louisiana), who admitted to being a client of the “D.C. Madam;” former Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.), who sent sexual emails and instant messages to teenage boys; and GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who confessed to defrauding his clients and corrupting public officials.

For many evangelical leaders, the most troubling fact is that many of the disgraced Republicans publicly opposed gay “marriage,” supported abstinence-only education and pro-life agendas. These seemingly family-friendly lawmakers, however, led a contrasting personal life.

“If [gay Democratic Congressman] Barney Frank had done those things, we’d say, ‘So what?’ But the hypocrite factor is what makes it worse,” said Tony Beam, the director of Christian World View Center, according to ABCNews.com.

“We’re supposed to be better than that because of the stands we take as a party,” he said.

However, Beam, though frustrated, believes not all hope is lost.

“It’s a matter of individuals and we’re all susceptible to sin, to evil, to giving in to our baser instincts,” he said. “It just reminds us that when we take a strong oral stance publicly, it’s all the more important that our private life lives up to that.”

Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, also pointed out how humans are prone to sin.

Evangelicals and social conservatives believe in human depravity. We’re disappointed by it, but not surprised by it,” said the prominent Baptist leader. “And we understand that our political leaders are human and it can happen to any of us if we are not watchful of our moral values.”

Beam compared the failings of individuals in the GOP to those in the church and said as a whole he still supports Republicans similar to how he still has faith in God despite the failings of pastors. He gave as example former megachurch pastor Ted Haggard who admitted to “sexual immorality” last year when a former male prostitute accused him having a sexual relationship with him that involved drugs.

The evangelical leaders also made mention of the GOP race for the White House, saying if abortion and gay rights advocate former mayor Rudy Giuliani wins the Republican nomination then it would be a sign that the party was no longer aligned with the evangelical community and that many would move away from the party.

Land predicted: “Once a social conservative is competitive against Hillary, the voters will drop off Giuliani like fleas off a dead dog.”

“At this moment, it’s Fred Thompson’s race to lose,” he added, referring to the former Tennessee senator who is vying to be seen as the most consistent mainstream conservative in the race.

Thompson, whose entry into the presidential race has been long anticipated, will officially launch his presidential bid Sept. 6 in a Webcast on his campaign site, followed by a five-day tour of early primary states.

    Dear Full Gospel:

And shouldn't we also pray for the Democratic candidates?

Just a thought on this latest thing with the Senator. In these days of constantly escalating (or so we're told) terrorist threats, does it not strike anyone that wasting precious law enforcement resources "tapping" for gays in men's rooms is pretty damn stupid? So what if consenting adults are trolling for one another in public rest rooms. I would rather those law enforcement resources be used on real threats.

Let's find some solutions. May all who are authentic Christians with solid character traits, leadership abilities, and bilbical worldviews, please run for elective office. Period.

Maybe what the candidates are facing are just indicative of the battle we ALL face. Perhaps all Christian denominations could join our prayers to God so that He would bestow on all the GOP candidates the faith this country's leaders need and the courage to live that faith on a daily basis.

So I guess this means that the Christian community needs to find something else to align itself with.

    Try God.

The reason that so many Evangelicals are looking to the Republican party is that " Many " " Not all " But many, are Kingdom Now beleivers.

They beleive and teach that the Church is going to Christianize the World and one day present the World to Christ in a perfect state. That is why so many are so very Political. They are attempting to do this through the political system, that is why they are so determined to get Christians to vote.

But the Bible tells us that the World is not going to get better,As Kingdom Now preachers say, But the World is going to Wax worse and worse.

The Hope of this World does not lay in the polititions, But in our Lord Jesus Christ.

I do not point people to a political party, I point them to Jesus Christ.

There is so much corruption in both parties, God help us as a nation. Our only hope is for God in His Grace to grant to the Church a genuine Revival.

There must be a genuine moving of the Holy Spirit within the True Church. For the World will go the way of the Church. If the True Church does not Experience a Genuine Move of the Spirit many will be lost. Art.

Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's. We could never "count on" any Republican or Democratic President, Governor, Senator, Representative, ad nauseum. We can count on the finished work of Christ at Calvary, however. We can count on the faithful Word of God, and Jesus Christ, who said He would never leave us or forsake us.

Why are some Evanjellycals still holding out hope for the GOP? I don't understand that. Half ot them are now sodomite lovers and pro-abortion, and whether they admit it or not, they are uncomfortable with people of faith.

As far as I'm concerned, Ron Paul is the only one in the race who's been consistent in his record, not only as a Christian, but as a legislator, and he is fast becoming poised to challenge all the front runners. You need to check out Chuck Baldwin's recent column if you haven't read it.

God save us from the deviates of politics and other sinful behaviors.

Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand!!!!

its not just the sin.its the fact that the republican party has held itself out as our moral teachers, and leaders, passing not just laws but judgement.they try to impose a set of morals yet in the dark they lurk about commiting their own secret sins.the bible says that your sins will find you out and that is what happened here.this mixing of politics and faith only damages both.Jesus said to render to caesar what is caesar and to God what is Gods, making a clear distinction between the two.He also said that we can not serve two masters for we will love one and hate the other, and Peter tells us that we are citizens of a heavenly kingdom not an earthly one.so while we have an earthly mission to lead christian lives and influence our friends and neighbors through the lives we lead, mixing Godly faith with earthly politics only leads to situations like this.
