Wallis: Social Change Requires Spiritual Revival

By Nathan Black|Christian Post Reporter

Progressive evangelical leader Jim Wallis recently preached to hundreds of Presbyterians urging spiritual revival in churches today.

"There are very few things as important as evangelism in the churches today," said Wallis, who serves as president of the Washington-based ministry Sojourners.

He was addressing some 500 people at the National Presbyterian Evangelism Conference of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) which concluded Monday.

The conference in Nashville was the first of its kind and offered a wide spectrum of evangelism ministries to equip attendees with a passion for more effective evangelism, which many believe has taken a back seat in churches today.

"For as many years as I can remember, the 'E' word has been lurking in the shadows of our church vocabulary," said conference chair Philip Lotspeich in a welcoming statement to attendees.

"It certainly has become 'that which must not be named' for many of the churches in our denomination,” the reverend commented, playing on a line from the popular Harry Potter fantasy series. “I’m not sure whether we are afraid that it might paint a picture of us that is unflattering or if we are merely terrified, unequipped, ill prepared or unaware of the need for Evangelism in our world today. Whatever the case, we have certainly abdicated our birthright when it comes to evangelism."

At the four-day conference, Wallis, also a well-known media figure and social activist, called for a revival of faith. But a genuine revival means it changes something in society, he indicated, noting that the best social movements have spiritual foundations.

“I believe something is happening in this country, something new and fresh ... is going on,” he said, according to the Presbyterian News Service. “Spiritual power is being harnessed to address the great social challenges of our time.

"Everyone knows politics is broken, is failing to address the moral issues of our time. And history shows that when that happens, social movements rise up to change politics," said Wallis whose hot-button issues include fighting poverty, protecting the environment and protesting war.

Social justice, however, doesn't happen unless there is a revival of faith, he said.

Reading an e-mail he received from a young man, Wallis stated, "I lost my faith because of TV preachers, bad fund-raising, pedophile priests and White House theology – I didn’t know you could be a Christian and care about the environment or the Iraq War."

Wallis stressed that a whole new generation wants to hear a whole new message from the Christian church, according to PNS.

Decades earlier, Wallis was a baby-boomer who joined the civil-rights and anti-Vietnam war movements. But those couldn't compare to the "radical" gospel message he discovered.

“Preaching the gospel for the sake of the world was far more radical than any of the politics I and my friends were reading,” he said.

"We have mountains to move, my friends, but we’re not going to move the mountains without a revival of faith.”

OK. I like story but I am tired of the bashing people like Wallis get for being progressive. Too many Christians are blind and think abortion and gay marriage is all it is about. Jesus stands for most of what progressives stand for (except fot those issues). I think Jesus would be not a republican if were here. How can war and capitalism be acceptable. Oh I guess its OK to stomp on and kill people after they are born. Whats up with this people?

The reason the state of America is in decline politically, socially, and spiritually is because of the lack of Christians running for office, along with the refusal of Christians to participate in the political process by simply voting. Christians stay home on Election Day in droves and then have the audacity to complain about the political system. We, Christians, stand by and watch the same old politicians get re-elected time after time. We vote by party affiliation and not according to the Word of God. We do nothing about candidates that campaign on gay rights, abortion, divorce, sexual freedom, and other demonic issues.
I believe that our American society is exactly the way we, as Christians, want to be. We are divorcing at the same rate, having abortions at the same rate, indulging in sexual perversion at the same rate, and practicing all kinds of SIN at the same rate as the unsaved society. (Churches are even treating members for sexual addition. What, in the name of God, is sexual addition? Sex outside of marriage is SIN! There is NO treatment program for sin. Repentance is the only "cure" for Sin, (I John 1:9). There are No treatment programs in the entire Bible. Jesus is a healer. If you want healing come to Jesus, if you want treatment, then go the world’s system.)
We DO NOT need revival. We need Christians to start acting like Christians. Christians, you know, people that follow and obey the teaching of Jesus Christ, not the teaching of Apostle or Bishop or Prophet or Pastor or Evangelist "Big Shot." Christians that are not afraid to tell someone about their Jesus through His Gospel, and not some watered down version of a Gospel light that purposefully omits the name of Jesus and only uses the name of Christ.
Imagine, so called ministers of the Lord, teaching that the name of Jesus just might offend some sinner, so make sure they only say Christ, how absurd. Far too many "ministers" are preaching sermons, teaching classes, doing seminars, holding conferences and writing books, but they leave out the name of Jesus, so no one will be offended. God helps us all! The Lord has warned that the day is coming when He will say to those who love the praises of man more than the Word of God, "I never knew you" (Matt 7:21-23).
The answer is Jesus and it always will be Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus, not in the name Christ. The Christ (the Messiah or the Anointed One and His anointing), is an adjective, Jesus is the Son of God, the son of man, and the Savior. You cannot serve Jesus if you don't know Him. You won't know Him unless you read the Bible and believe it is true. Then you can stand on the Word of God, who is Jesus, and He will change society and restore America. It is not going to happen by some political program or so called revival of the same old thing.

    Amen!

All issues are biblical issues. Some are more important than others. Food, clothing and shelter are obvious big issues, but murder seems to me to be a bit more important.

There is more concern about the environment than for pre-born babies in the
"progressive" evangelical movement. How can Wallis embrace a political party whose platform vehemently defends the right to kill life in the womb? Such explicit support runs contrary to the biblical concepts of the sacredness of human life. Spiritual revival cannot occur until there is genuine repentance from sin. The state-sanctioned shedding of unborn blood is a national tragedy that must be stopped. Until then, calls for spiritual revival will lack power since there is no genuine repentance.
