Poll: GOP Presidential Race a Toss-Up

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

WASHINGTON – White men, conservatives, evangelicals and other pivotal blocs are divided among the Republican Party's leading contenders for president, leaving the race for the 2008 GOP nomination highly fluid, according to the latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll.

Republican presidential hopeful, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, second from left, speaks with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., right after the Republican presidential debate Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. At left is Republican presidential hopeful former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

The poll showed the contest remains a virtual tie between Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor, at 24 percent and Fred Thompson, the actor and former senator from Tennessee, at 19 percent. Not far behind at 15 percent is Sen. John McCain of Arizona while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has 7 percent.

“Overall, the survey underscores that no contender has yet to convincingly make the case that he is the candidate for change that so many voters want as the party searches for its identity and a successor to Bush,” AP reported.

In contrast, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York has a clear, across-the-board lead in the Democratic race over Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois by 34 percent to 20 percent, roughly the margin she has enjoyed for months. Lagging behind was former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina at 10 percent, while another 12 percent had no preference.

Further highlighting how up for grabs the GOP race is, AP reported that fully 22 percent of Republicans did not back a candidate. And when the handful of GOP voters backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia, who has not said he is running, are distributed to their second choices, they divide about evenly among Giuliani, Thompson and McCain.

"I like Rudy's stand on the war on terror, and I also like his leadership qualities and I don't just mean 9/11," said August Olivier, 61, a conservative Giuliani backer and retired automobile executive from Rochester, Mich. But he told AP he also liked Thompson and might change his mind, adding: "I'm not against him. We've got time."

Lisa Baudoin, 40, a student and homemaker in Sugar Land, Texas, said she is a conservative and supporting Thompson because of his views on abortion and immigration. She said she does not like Giuliani's more moderate immigration stance or his three marriages, and doesn't like McCain's opposition to the U.S. torturing terrorism suspects.

"How are you going to get information? They don't play nice. Why do we have to if no one else is," she said, according to AP.

While a number of evangelicals were rooting for Thompson to join the White House race, after he finally announced his candidacy on Sept. 4, many have pulled back to more carefully scrutinize the man they might rally behind and call their commander-in-chief.

“A month or two ago, I sensed there was some urgency for people to make a move and find a candidate,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, according to The Associated Press. “Right now, I think people are stepping back a little and watching. The field is still very fluid.”

Thompson, a former Tennessee senator and an actor on the hit TV drama “Law & Order,” has portrayed himself as a conservative candidate opposed to abortion and gay “marriage” – two key political concerns of evangelical conservatives.

However, under closer scrutiny, Thompson has been seen by some Christian leaders as not firm enough in defending core issues of the Christian right. Continue »

This historial Jesus probably walked the earth. However, his group, who called themselves "Christians" had to extend his legend and created the miracles, etc. So-called Christians who basically hate gays, lesbians, and anything in between need to read Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Every society has had its mythologies to help its people cope with the daily difficulties of life: poverty, illness, war, consumption, you name it.
From the Chinese to the India to Egypt to Norse mythology to the Romans and Greeks and, ultimately, Mesopotamia (Jesus's land), each society and culture proclaims to have its various saviors. I hate to burst the bubbles of the not-so-intellectual club, but there ain't much out there but ether and energy, molecules and atoms. It's well and fine to think that when you die you will be greeted by 77 or is it 78 virgins the Muslims say? I'm simply hoping for a hot meal....

Any so-called 'christian's want to comment. It's something I 'used' to be. Can't call myself a christian any longer after what I see these 'christians' vote for.

Great story, but I am completely disgusted with what the so-called 'christians' (small 'c') have done to this country. I have never seen such Biblical mythology extolled as factual information.
Imagine the damage done to our children who are brainwashed with such nonsense.

    Huckabee doesn't seem conservative enough.

Part 2: EXPOSING THE MASON CULT POLITICAL DECEPTION

I am also here to unfortunately announce that masons for years have invaded every sort of church, influencing what pastors preach in their congregations and even joining leadership positions within particular churches. This is where the anti-Christ pagan teaching from the emergent church comes from. The masons understand that the greatest threat against their agenda is the well-informed Christian voter who has an authentic walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. It really doesn’t matter what the individuals particular religion or denomination, eventually their higher orders come from the leadership of the Masonic lodge. Unless pastors or individual Christians are told to compromise their convictions they are threaten with economic persecution by with holding from the offering plate or causing them to lose their jobs or their businesses by waging secret targeted boycotts against them by strategically empowering there competition or deflecting their customer somewhere else. (It is not an accident that even their leaders who control ALL global banks are called dragons.) Others who come up against them have been threatened with death if they use their power against to demands of their wing of the masons. The one world government is already here and many Christians have not realized it before. Masons identify themselves by “the mark on their hand” … their unorthodox handshake. We all must stand our ground against this evil and never back down on living and preaching the gospel. Our nation will rise of fall based on the spiritual condition the saints of God. NEVER EVER EVER EVER compromise whether people are looking or not – God himself sees you. Some leaders have not taken the mark.

VOTE AGAINST the FLOW … VOTE HUCKBEE!!!

I am here to blow the lid off of everything!

PART 1: EXPOSING THE MASON CULT POLITICAL DECEPTION

RUDY (a mason) is the republican parties bait and trap. Hillary Clinton is from New York, and she will have more popularity than Rudy. Both Rudy and Romney will lose against a Hillary- Obamanation (abomination) ticket. Every time the republican compromises their biblical pro-life principles they will ultimately lose elections. ie. DOLE. By conviction I cannot and will never vote for a pro-abortion and pro-homosexual candidate. But may be it is time for the Christian in America to go through a massive religious persecution. I believe many Christians have taken for granted this period of time where the majority of our courts have been voted along side the constitution and are beginning to lean pro-life. I am convinced that many Christians are unaware of the fact that a president not only oversees a countries protection; they also pick the federal judges. Much of the younger Christian voters may not remember the heavy religious persecution that Christians experienced during the 70's and 80's. In those days, socialist progressives controlled the Democratic Party even as they are today. It is NOT an accident that Mikhail Gorbachev has a non-profit political foundation in CA and New York. Also it is not an accident that it is difficult for a person to be elected as president unless they belong to the Masonic Lodge. Masons are a secret society that is a combination of a secret mafia, a political machine, a cult, and the BORG from star trek - which gains power and influence over three areas of a society by recruiting members from the following three areas: 1) Business/ Banking 2) Print and Electronic media 3) Local-State-Federal Government. It really doesn't matter what party is in power both republicans and democrat when both groups belong to the Masonic lodge. Once a member gets pass their 30th degree in the Masonic lodge they must renounce their faith in Christ. Masonic leadership keeps their organization together by making its members secretly wealthy by sharing their wealth and power amongst themselves. For example masons receive free health care at various shiners hospitals. Ultimately their agenda & objective will always position them closer to a one-world government. If the party in power is republican we move toward the one world government slower; and if the political party is democrat we will move toward the one world government with lighting pace. Leaving the organization becomes difficult for some because their love for money and power is greater than their love for our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
