State Senator 'Sues' God

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

A Nebraska state senator is “suing” God, claiming that the Almighty has made “terroristic threats” against him and his constituents, inspired fear and caused "widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth's inhabitants."

This file photo from April 12, 2006, shows Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha during debate in the legislative chamber in Lincoln, Neb. Saying that God has caused 'fearsome floods ... horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes,' Nebraska's longest-serving state senator says he is suing the Almighty to make a legal point.

Sen. Ernie Chambers (D-Omaha) also says that God has caused "fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues" and more.

His lawsuit asks for a "permanent injunction ordering Defendant to cease certain harmful activities and the making of terroristic threats."

"It's a lawsuit against a defendant who has perpetrated much harm and damage on the human race," Chambers said on CNN.

Although he is known to skip morning prayers during the legislative session and often criticizes Christians, the Omaha senator says he isn't suing God because he has any kind of personal objections against Him.

Chambers told a local Fox affiliate that his lawsuit is in response to bills brought forth by other state senators to try and stop frivolous lawsuits from being filed.

"The Constitution requires that the courthouse doors be open, so you cannot prohibit the filing of suits," Chambers said. "Anyone can sue anyone they choose, even God."

And the senator says he is able to sue God because the “defendant, being omnipresent, is personally present in Douglas County."

According to KETV.com, Chambers is asking for the court to grant him a summary judgment or, as an alternative, for the judge to set a date for a hearing as expeditiously as possible and enter a permanent injunction.

Hey Crossfire: LOL! thanks for that update!! Isn't it amazing that God knew all about this and yet HE still gave His life for ours! It is a real testimony to our God and how great HE truly is, not to mention how kind and longsuffering He truly is! And HE has a great sense of humor!
It never ceases to amaze me HIS greatness and goodness! Even while we were His enemies, Christ died for us! You are awesome Lord God!

Yes, this is ridiculous! The man is ignorant and I'm surprised he was elected. It's sad that such a man to high office, because he is a fool in the eyes of God.

Obiviously, this man's Bible is being used to level the coffee table. If he was reading it, he would know that Satan is the prince of the air. All the disasters mentioned in this rediculous lawsuit are not acts of God "wherein ye once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the powers of the air, of the spirit that now worketh in the sons of disobedience (Eph 2:2 ASV)"

This is laughabale. This Senator thinks GOD is answerable to him? GOD is answerabale to no one. What this person does not realize is that he will( like all of us) Will be judged by GOD. He's in for a real shock

To Tom: There will be a judgement day for all mankind, God is not subject to any man's judgement. Whether you believe Him or not, and it doesn't offend me when people don't believe in Him. I believe in Him and I'm accountable to Him for my own life, not yours or anyone elses.
God gave me a testimony because HE restored my life from the ashes and put real love and joy in my heart. God doesn't need anyone to defend Him, HE is my Defender and my Shield.
But I will always come on board and acknowledge Him and give my testimony, that's what He has called me to do!
da6383ma: You're quite welcome, I like to help out whereever I can! You see I love my Lord and my life and nothing anyone says to me offends me, I let the Lord handle those things! You see I really believe HIM, I have a real personal relationship with Him! He's an awesome, loving God, but HE is also my best friend and HE paid a very high price and went through so much suffering and pain, and for me that was a turning point in my life, when I really took a look at the life of Jesus Christ, and there is so much evidence of His life, His death and His resurrection. Not just from Christian books, but from historic documents. And yet man continues to deny His Creator; and the only thing that God has done is love us and forgive us from sinning against Him! Yet in his arrogance and pride man puts himself on the throne of which only Almighty God belongs, and yet our God is still so loving and so patient. My prayer is that all those who still harden their hearts to Him, will let their hearts be opened to His love and healing. It is your choice, choose life or choose death. I have chosen JESUS CHRIST = LIFE! For His Glory! - Annie

Let's put some logic in this one.

Ernie Chambers is an atheist according Wikipedia.
An atheist is defined on dictionary.com as "One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods."
Perjury is defined on dictionary.com as "The willful giving of false testimony under oath or affirmation, before a competent tribunal, upon a point material to a legal inquiry".

So if he is actually an atheist and does not believe God exists, then didn't he lie on the court document that he signed (perjury). If he did actually lie on the court document (being an atheist), would that not be illegal (perjury)? If he committed perjury, shouldn't someone turn around on him and press charges? Is that not a felony? If he committed a felony, should he not be forced to step down from his position? Shouldn't we be protecting the integrity of the court or the signed documents. Shouldn't those documents mean something?

Help me out here. Am I a little off base on this??

The court could not accept this suit as it would be an acknowledgement that there IS God and this would violate the establishment clause.

I'd love to see a lawyer take the case for the defense. There is more proof of man causing his own destruction than God. Frankly, I'd countersue for defamation of character on the basis of the ultimate demonstration of love for humankind that was the gift of the Cross.

Can anyone say; borderline lunatic? Aren't these people voted into office to attend to the needs of those who put them there, rather than wasting tax-payers' money filing frivolous lawsuits and elbowing for headlines?

I think a lot of people are missing the real point of this story. He is speaking with a very forked tongue. He says several times that anyone can and should be able to sue anyone else even God, but then he comes back and says that he is trying to stop frivilous lawsuits. Which one is it? The bottom line that I am seeing here, and I read the court document, is that he is basically calling God a terrorist and that we as Christians are perpetuating his "terror". He is leaving the doors wide open to massive lawsuits against any Christian who tries to spread the word of God. I think this is something that we all need to be very worried about.

Whatever the senator's intention's, his suit is a great 'reductio ad absurdum' of the alleged existence of God. God is make-believe and it is time to stop making believe and to understand reality and live accordingly.

RE anniefourjesus: Who are we to tell God what He can and cannot do.
As one who thinks for myself I think that if the Christian God did exist, there better be a Judgment Day when God comes before man, because He has a lot to answer for!

If all history has been God's plan then He must be from Rube Goldberg's Engineering School!

Hello! His lawsuit isn't serious. It's a stunt to make a point about how easily you can file a lawsuit against anyone for anything. He wants frivolous lawsuits to stop and is doing this to draw publicity to the process. I guess it's working too, since reactionary lemmings are jumping in to "defend" God when this senator is not seriously suing him.

    Comedy!!!

    He’s like Job.

    “Today also my complaint is bitter;
his hand is heavy despite my groaning.
O that I knew where I might find him,
that I might come even to his dwelling!
I would lay my case before him,
and fill my mouth with arguments.
I would learn what he would answer me,
and understand what he would say to me.
Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power?
No; but he would give heed to me.
There an upright person could reason with him,
and I should be acquitted for ever by my judge.”
    Job 23:2-7

Even if his "case" did go to trial, the senator would lose, naturally. As Annie already pointed out all the source of the death and destruction is really the product of Satan and sinful man. God is the one who heals, the one who saves, the one who turns evil into good after sin wreaks havoc.

God has done no harm to man at all. Man's choices have brought about his own downfall. Almighty God is The Creator and He is no subject to any man's questioning. Who are we to tell God what He can and cannot do. He created us. He made man in His image, and man has done nothing but turn away from our Loving Father.
And yet He sent His only Son Jesus to set us free from the wages of sin that we brought on ourselves. He loves us so much that He made a plan to come down here and identify with our humanity. God is not bound by time and space, He sees things as they already are, and His plan for mankind's redemption is being worked out here in time and space for man's benefit.
We donot have the whole picture as God does, we can only see in part.
It just blows my mind that man can and does show such disrespect to Almighty God!
Open your hearts and minds to see the truth about our Almighty Father, Satan has so blinded the hearts and minds of much of humanity, they've forgotten their own identity given to them by Almighty God Himself. Man compares himself to animals, etc when all along he is made in the image of Almighty God!!
Almighty Father God wants a personal relationship with His children, but you can choose to not want that with Him. And sadly that is what many choose. GOD is no subject to man! We are subject to Him, HE is the KING!

I think I should sue my ancestors...afterall they came to this country that would allow an Idiot panjadrum like Mr. Chambers to pursue an action like this.
