With the number of megachurches in America growing at an increasingly rapid rate, the largest of them all now have a new label: "gigachurches."

Topping this year's largest churches in the country is Lakewood Church in Houston, with an attendance of 47,000, according to Outreach Magazine's annual 100 list of America's largest and fastest-growing churches. While Lakewood remains on top, 35 of the top 100 draw 10,000-plus people each week (gigachurches). The rest have a weekly attendance of 6,000-plus.

Meanwhile, megachurches (2,000-plus attendees) now number an estimated 1,300. While that's only 0.4 percent of all U.S. Protestant churches, megachurches are growing rapidly as they pioneer new approaches largely to engage the unchurched population.

"At a time when an estimated 70 percent to 80 percent of U.S. churches are either in plateau or decline, I am encouraged to discover a number of healthy congregations on the Outreach 100 lists that are bucking the negative tendencies prevalent in so many U.S. churches," said Dr. Ed Stetzer, director of research and missiologist in residence for LifeWay Research. Outreach partnered with Stetzer for the first time for this year's top 100 which was based on new methodology that factored in both numerical and percentage growth in attendees.

This year's fastest growing church is Hispanic megachurch Iglesia Cristiana Segardores de Vida in Hollywood, Fla. Within the last year alone, the church grew by 3,050 attendees and now claims almost 6,000. The 100 churches on the fastest-growing list grew four times faster than churches on the largest list.

A key growth trend, or megatrend, is multi-site technology. Currently, seven of the top 10 fastest-growing churches are multi-site churches in which churches have set up extension sites on multiple campuses across the city, state or country. In 1990, there were only 10 multi-site Protestant churches in the United States. Today, 25 percent of all megachurches have more than one site and 16 percent of all Protestant churches in the United States are seriously considering adding a site within the next two years, according to LifeWay Research.

Stetzer doesn't consider multi-sites a trend anymore, but rather as "the new normal."

And the multi-site phenomenon continues to morph and transition as churches find new forms of expression to run church activities in many locations.

LifeChurch.tv (No. 31 Fastest, No. 5 Largest), stationed in Edmond, Okla., has launched sites across borders to Arizona, Texas, Florida and New York, as well as on the Internet.

North Coast Church in Vista, Calif., (not among the top 100 Fastest or Largest) uses its multiple campuses to engage different cultural segments and reach different generations with a range of worship experiences – from traditional (hymns) to postmodern (sub-woofers, candles).

Other multi-sites have chosen to create smaller, more intimate faith communities at their satellite locations, either offering services of only 200 people or even smaller to a house church.

Another type of megachurch Stetzer noted includes churches using their platform for political action in new ways.

While Christian churches have long been perceived as monolithically right wing, more megachurches today are tackling issues not historically connected with those of the Religious Right.

Hispanic churches have risen to the frontlines of the immigration reform battle, black churches are voicing themselves on social action, and others are championing issues such as eradicating global poverty and creation care.

Ethnic diversity is also a noted megatrend as Hispanic and Asian congregations continue to increase in the United States. While the growth of the Hispanic population and churches is already evident, Stetzer predicts more Asian congregations will appear on the Outreach 100 list in the future.

More megachurches today are also returning to the foundational ethic of multiplication through discipleship. That's a turn from the emphasis on personal self-help and church growth methods that have been seen in the megachurch phenomenon.

why is it that ppl can b so religious?! christianity is about a relationship with god not about some religious ppl that r pissed because they attend dead chuches, LISTEN UP. big churches do not equal bad. Little churches that don't grow in 10 years DO equal BAD. How can u have so little faith that u think that the word of god cannot be preached to thousands in a SINGLE church. God has called us to preach the word to NATIONS, not just hundred people, read timothy 2:4, it is time to stop being lazy and become what god has called us to be; Leaders of Nations. Jesus preached to 5000 people at the same time, he also said that those who believed in him would do things like or even greater than what he did (don't believe me? look it up!) It seems to me that the false christians r the ones that seems to be stuck as a little church for the past 10 years.

It's all about lookin good with the 'crowd'. I am a believer. However, if the church where I visit does not cast out devils on a regular basis AS JESUS DID: and HEAL AS JESUS DID, then why would I want to be a part of it? The church is nothing but entertainment. Nobody is foolin God.

Judge not, that ye be judged. Matthew 7:1 KJV
Humble youselves under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you. 1 Peter 5:6

Men and women are scared of things that are not understood in the first place. We as christians loose sight of gods purpose with our own. Teach by example not by force. Knowing gods word is one thing, living it is another. May god bless you all.

I can see how some may see the giga and mega churches as a bad thing or unholy, however I dont agree with those people. I believe in God and Jesus and Mary... I choose to communicate faithfully and directly to God. I do not "belong" to any specific church, yet this doesnt mean I dont do good, this does not mean I do not tithe, I choose to give money and earnings to needy people instead of to a conglomerate church, I am still giving to those in need and in helping those people I become God's Angel on earth. (Angel means messenger of God) I gave that person money for food or drink and a little bit of hope that it may be a good day. I do not consider myself Catholic, Baptist, Methodist nor any other denomination. I chose to believe in God as my Father and Jesus as my Savior and God's Son... I applaud those who do have the dedication to get up early on any given day to come together in common belief and pray to God, be it through Jesus or Mary or directly... However you want to worship should be accepted as God would have wanted us to do. God sent Jesus to cleanse and teach the world. God loves all the people of the world equally, we are all his children. Belief is up to the individual and how that individual interprets the Bible. Ask yourself would God want you to bicker about the "right way" to worship? NO! I do not and could never speak for God, but I believe he wants us to be kind, patient, accepting, giving and loving people. Jesus accepted all people as the son of God. He saved ALL people even the ones that hated him out of fear. Honestly I only want equal respect for all people because everyone is different and special and unique, just the way God intended in his perfect will, that being said all people will worship the same God in unique and individual ways. Let them.

The feeding of the 5,000, how about Acts 2. I would say that mega churches are in fact Biblical. I love it. Having a small church (which I am from) does not mean that a church is a correct or biblical church. Having a large church does not guarantee any special Holy Spirit filling either. Churches should be judged on an individual basis. I agree with what my preacher preaches from the Bible. The day that I disagree, I will simply find a new church.

Biblical principle: The Pastor is the judge of the church. Hebrews 13:7 There are far to many people going to hell for me to brow beat a man of God, wrong or not. I figure those are his britches, and that is is his pulpit. If he wants to split his britches in his pulpit, that's his business. If I don't like it, I'll Go do it the right way somewhere else.

For all practical puposes, Richard Simons can drag out a small crown just as 'KIS' can drag out a large crowd, and they are both as wicked as the day is long.

Idea: Stop fighting. Lift up Jesus. Pray. Read your Bible. Go to church. Love people. Amen? Amen.

P.S. I find that my nose works best in my business.

The word "CHURCH" means "called out ones", it is not somewhere you go to say that you believe in Jesus. Called out of what? called out of sin! called out of the world and the way the world thinks and operates. Called out from our own ways of thinking and taking on the way of walking like our master Jesus.
If it means called out ones! how can you have a "mega called out one"?
The way you people think and speak is the total opposite to what Jesus Himself said,This is because you do not know the words of Jesus, nor want to.

Many are called few are chosen. Only a few are going to be saved. There is no such thing as a mega church. Just a mega lot of tithes and a mega lot of unscripturality. Theres a mega lot of lying going on if you believe these churches are called out from the world. They look like the world, practice and lust for the same things the world desires; all except one thing, they use the name of Jesus and in doing so are deceiving masses of people.
Jesus said that wherever two or three are gathered He is in the midst and I believe His words not yours.
You have received the strong delusion of 2 Thessalonian v 3 and are believing a lie. These places are new age, Luciferian worshiping and do not promote the truth of the words of Jesus. They promote positive thinking, not repenting with tears and crying out to God for forgiveness. They promote feeling good about yourselves, instead of denying yourselves.
They promote gain and say it is Godliness! what foolishness!

Repent and cry out to God!

you have learnt the way of the heathen and are far from God. He is not in these places you call mega church. These people are not His people. These churches are not His church. They promote lies, and teach fables; stories to tickle your ears.
They are run by free masons/Illuminati Jesuits, who are leading you all back to mama, the Church of Rome.

The blind leading the blind.

Jesus is coming soon,Maranatha.

My problem lies when we placed so much emphasis on infrastructure. As if the church depended on it. 'Think outside the bun', so to speak. There is more to Christianity than padded seats and airconditioned santuary. 'In the field ripe for harvest' is where Christ wants us to be. Outside our .comfort zone'. To a homeless person, size is not important. Faithfulness is.

Nothing wrong with big churches, I personally have been a member of one of the churches listed, it was ok, I attend a smaller church now because I prefer a personal touch from the pastor and want a mentor/discipling relationship, which I didn't find much of at my previous church. I like what I heard one Pastor say, (and he is not against big churches) grow big PEOPLE, not big churches. A good church in my opinion is one that people are getting saved and moving toward maturity in Christ

Wow, I've been flagged 4 times and look, I've used the very words Jesus used. He did say these words and just like back then you religiously inclined scribes and pharisees don't like HIS words. I didn't give you my opinion on this article only the words of Jesus.
More words of Jesus, He said that the time would come when they ( the church) would not endure sound teaching.
Did you hear that word endure?

It's the same word "endure" that Jesus had to "endure" on the cross.

My point is that Jesus said it takes endurance to hear and practice the words of God.

You see, these churches are not the true church. Now I don't dispute that one or two might be saved who attend these churches, but quite clearly, according to the words of Jesus not all of them are saved. Not even the pastors!
But God is bringing His true church out from within these apostate churches, (they are the remnant, washed in blood and tested as with fire.)

These people think they are saved and convinced by the false teachers that they are saved, but according to 2Thessolonians 2v11 they have had a strong delusion poured out on them by God himself. They are the ones believing Gods lie.
The mass majority of so called believers in the last days have no love for the truth, they love fables and lies, but preach the truth and they don't like it.
Jesus came to save the sinner from his sin, not give him a car or a job. Jesus said to forsake "all" not desire the things of this world and live second rate worldly lives.
Be in the world but not part of it.
Jesus said, and I quote; "love NOT the world nor the things of the world"

Yes I hear you say" but we don't like those words"
Oh well, Jesus is coming soon and you lot can explain to Him which words of HIS you didn't like and didn't want to do!
These mega churches do not promote holiness nor repentance, they promote self and obtaining the things of this world. They promote corporate bodies rather than living singular stones. They are truly not preaching the gospel of the true living Jesus;no they promote another Jesus.
In the words of Jesus, in answer to His disciples question of will MANY be saved,Jesus answered and said;

"strive to enter in at the straight gate, for many, I say unto you will seek to enter in and shall not be able"

Many are called FEW are chosen.
Maranatha.
