Presidential Hopefuls Highlight 'Values' to Christian Conservatives

By Michelle Vu|Christian Post Reporter

WASHINGTON – Social conservatives across the nation convened Friday in the nation’s capital to hear Republican presidential hopefuls pitch what they value at a much anticipated summit that is expected to provide an early prediction of which candidate will win the favor of Christian conservatives.

Former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson speaks at the Washington Briefing 2007: Values Voter Summit on Friday, October 19, 2007 in Washington, D.C.

Under patriotic colored lights and an American flag backdrop, nine Republican candidates are appealing for the vote of more than 2,500 values voter from 48 states during the two-day “Washington Briefing 2007: Values Voter Summit.”

The summit, hosted by the conservative group Family Research Council, is the largest platform for presidential candidates to address social conservatives. This year’s event saw a 50 percent increase in attendance compared to last year, according to FRC’s president, Tony Perkins.

The FRC head opened the event by listing the key issues for value voters – restoring a culture of life, upholding marriage as between one man and one woman, promoting pro-family values, protecting religious freedom, and supporting the nation’s defense and responsible foreign policy.

“Wherever we go, we must take with us the message of faith, freedom, and family,” Perkins said. “We must not waver in our commitment to these values, my friends, because they will determine not only our generation but the future of generations to come.”

The seven candidates who spoke Friday all pledged to fight abortion and gay “marriage.”

Former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney arguably received the warmest welcome by the crowd who stood up to clap when they got on stage and excitedly flashed cameras at the presidential hopefuls.

Thompson wooed the conservative Christian crowd by saying his personal experience through seeing his child’s sonogram helped solidify his pro-life stance.

“I will never feel the same again because my heart is now fully engaged with my head,” said the former Law & Order actor. “No legislation that funds this procedure (abortion) will pass my desk without my veto.”

Thompson highlighted his 100 percent pro-life voting record during his eight years in office.

“I’m proud of that voting record. That’s who I was then, that’s who I am today, and that what I will be as president,” Thompson said.

The former Tennessee senator also said he is opposed to embryonic stem cell research and would help to put more judges like Chief Justice John Roberts in the Supreme Court.

Thompson admitted that he had no idea what he would do in his first 100 days in the White House, but knew what he would do in the first hour.

“I would go into the Oval Office and pray for the wisdom to know what’s right,” said the man who has also confessed to not attending church regularly. “In my first hour I would pray for the strength to do what’s right.”

Despite the warm reception by the audience, some were heard saying Thompson’s speech was “overwhelmingly disappointing.” He did not clearly enunciate his values nor provide a detail picture of his goals in office to improve America.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was also well-received by the crowd, which didn’t seem to be bothered by his Mormon faith. Romney repeatedly emphasized his strong pro-family stance saying he is pro-family “on every level from personal to political.” Continue »

Ron Paul IS the only hope running. He has a 100% Pro-Const. voting record. Pastor Chuck Baldwin says--

Crossfire--For an ordained minister Huck does not know the Word very well.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-BFEhkIujA

Huck says "How did He do it, when did He do & how long did it take? I don't know." Well, the Bible tells us when, how & how long it took.

Huckabee is a sham. One day he says he believes God is creator the next he says he would still teach evolution.

Mr. Huckabee uses his clergy credentials to manipulate the Christian voters while advocating non-Christian values and principles in his assertion that he would ignore the US Constitution if he, one man, thought it was the right thing to do. In that he is indistinguishable from a Hillary or George Bush, Giuliani or any other 'leader' who believes in using the force of big government to further their personal agenda at the expense of liberty and justice for all.

Ron Paul is the only candidate from any party who does not check his Christian values at the door as an elected representative of the people. Ron Paul's adherence to the rule of law, rather than the rule of men makes him the most principled candidate and his Christian faith guides his every decision.

Mike Huckabee is an shallow illusion of a Christian who isn't willing to put his own ego aside in deference to his faith. It is so sad to see the FRC attendees being stroked by Huckabee's tele-evangelist pandering.

Ron Paul is the epitome of a Christian conservative leader. All others pale against his untarnished record. No wonder they are all so afraid of going toe-to-toe with him.

I don't mind Huckabee. Although I've always felt a little uncomfortable about a Baptist minister telling me how much he loves the Catholic Church. I'm glad that his campaign manager is a Catholic and as he says a lot of the senior members of his team. Perhaps he will be another Reagan. I like what he says about the Supreme Court...can you imagine having 6 Catholics on the bench? :) What's the Supreme Court now? 5 Catholics, 2 protestants (different faiths), and 2 Jewish individuals.

I'm convinced that Huckabee is "our man". Please take the time to check him out

I say that....with alot of enthusiasm. I was only recently converted to the "Huckabee camp" of supporters. Up till recently I was supporting Brownback, but when brownback dropped I saw Mike Huckabee and looked up what he stood for. When I found out he is currently going through a poll surge, that he holds to all of the values I hold dear too, that he is an eloquent speaker, etc.etc. I am now pushing for Huckabee harder than I ever pushed for Brownback.

On another note. I think it's pretty suspicous that Romney won (barely) as a result of the online votes while losing miserably to Huckabee in the onsite votes. I think Romney ralled the whole Mormon church to log on to vote and probably used money from his millions to e-mail blast people to vote online.

Huckabee's the true winner of the straw poll.

Christian conservatives have spoken, and spoken loud and clear.

Sorry, Ron Paul supporters. As conservative as Ron Paul may be, Huckabee is obviously the right guy for the job. If Christians rally behind him and he gets strong backing financially, he'll win.

And Reason #67 to vote for Ron Paul wasn't really a good reason. Huckabee's #67 would sound something like this:

    67. He is an ordained Christian minister who knows Christ was right in all that He said.

    Hello All,
    Two questions:
    1) Where can we get the text of their speeches?
    2) Why aren't more people talking about Duncan Hunter? I am not real familiar with some of critical points of the other key issues like immigration or health care, etc., but he seems, value-wise, to be a strong, unapologetic Christian. I have a friend who said he was their congressman and they said he was very good and very ethical. I am not saying he is my choice, but I am wondering if there is something about him I haven't heard because he seems like a good choice and yet we never hear about him.
    Thanks for any thoughts.

No mention in this article of the only true conservative running, Congressman and doctor, Ron Paul. This is a classic example of the bias in the reporting on Ron Paul, who also spoke at this conference but is not listed anywhere. In fact, he's the ONLY candidate, where if you Google his "statement of faith" you find, in part, this:

"I freely confess that Jesus Christ is my personal Savior, and that I seek His guidance in all that I do. I know, as you do, that our freedoms come not from man, but from God. My record of public service reflects my reverence for the Natural Rights with which we have been endowed by a loving Creator." - Ron Paul

Do the same for Fred Thompson and you get headline titles like, "Dr. James Dobson: Fred Thompson 'Not a Christian'". Hmmm. Seems like the Christians like Mr. Thompson the way he's being lifted up in this article.

And when you do this for Romney, one of the headlines reads, "Christian Leader: Romney's Mormon Faith Could Hinder Presidential Bid", and goes on to say in the opening paragraph:
"A prominent and powerful evangelical Christian leader, James Dobson, said yesterday that the Mormon faith practiced by Governor Romney of Massachusetts could pose a serious obstacle if Mr. Romney makes a bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008."

McCain? It's hard to say because he doesn't put his faith statement up there for others to see. He just says "he wants a Christian president".

And Giuliani. That, my fellow Christians, is a joke. Have you seen him dressed up in drag yet? Just Google, "rudy in drag" and enjoy.

Ron Paul is being kept from you my Christian brethren, even by Christian sources like this one. Why> Because he's opposed to an un-just invasion of a country that never attacked us - the war in Iraq. And many Christians have been led to believe by the media and the current administration that this was justified. Do your homework.

Find out why Ron Paul has gotten more donations from the US Military, both active and retired, than ANY OTHER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.
