Huckabee Rise Triggers Strong Response

By Michelle Vu|Christian Post Reporter

WASHINGTON – Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee is on the rise as his campaign gains momentum, drawing stronger response not only from voters but also a fellow contender.

Republican presidential hopeful, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, looks on during the Iowa Republican Party's annual Reagan Dinner , Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, in Des Moines, Iowa.

This past week the ordained Southern Baptist preacher bumped former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney from his first-tier position and caused the best financed Republican contender to take a personal shot at the not-so-well financed Huckabee.

Romney took a swipe at Huckabee Friday in an Iowa Public Television interview that the former Arkansas governor had supported “special tuition breaks to the children of illegal immigrants,” according to TIME.com's political blog Swampland.

It was the first time that the GOP frontrunner in Iowa had ever directed an attack solely at Huckabee.

“I must be doing well,” Huckabee said Saturday morning in response when he was informed of Romney’s comment.

Huckabee for the first time passed Romney in a national poll on Friday. The Rasmussen Reports, considered one of the nation’s most accurate polling firm, announced Friday that “for the first time ever” Huckabee moved into the top four.

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani holds the top position with 20 percent of likely Republican primary voters nationwide, followed by former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson with 19 percent, Arizona Sen. John McCain with 14 percent, Huckabee with 12 percent, and Romney with 11 percent nationally, according to Rasmussen.

“I guess I’d be coming after me too,” Huckabee said. “I’d also be crying, if I’d spent all that money.”

The Wall Street Journal and the head of Arkansas’ conservative Eagle Forum have also scrutinized Huckabee’s governing records, pointing out critical aspects as he gained greater prominence in the election.

Also this past week, the 30-million strong National Association of Evangelicals released a survey that showed Huckabee leading the list of 2008 presidential candidates in the October 2007 Evangelical Leaders survey.

The survey questioned 100 members of the NAE board of directors that include heads of evangelical denominations with about 45,000 local churches, executives of para-church organizations and colleges.

“There is no groundswell support for any Republican or Democratic candidate,” says NAE President Leith Anderson. “Huckabee is a clear first choice but there is concern that he is too far behind in the polls to catch up. If he does well in the Iowa caucuses or early primaries then Evangelicals may suddenly rally to his support.”

Huckabee first gained notable national attention after a surprising strong second-place finish in August at the Iowa straw poll and then coming in second narrowly behind Romney at the Washington Values Voter Summit earlier this month.

He has been called the “dark horse” and the “sleeper candidate” of the upcoming election as he continues to gain supporters with his down-to-earth, “I’m one of you” demeanor while proving to be a formidable foe during debates.

“His successes have been all the more remarkable for having been accomplished on a shoestring budget, suggesting that genuine voter affection, as opposed to advertising dollars, is driving the Huckabee surge,” noted Karen Tumulty, TIME magazine's national political correspondent on Saturday.

Although Huckabee had lost to Romney in the Values Voters straw poll by a narrow margin of 30 votes – receiving altogether 1,565 votes (online and onsite) compared to his rival’s 1,595 votes – the former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee had received 51.26 percent of the onsite votes compared to onsite runner-up Romney’s 10.40 percent.

RON PAUL: "I have never been one who is comfortable talking about my faith in the political arena. In fact, the pandering that typically occurs in the election season I find to be distasteful. But for those who have asked, I freely confess that Jesus Christ is my personal Savior, and that I seek His guidance in all that I do. RON PAUL is also Christian, in fact there is no candidate who has unwaveringly held to the Biblical-based Constitution than RON PAUL. The Bible is our guidebook for our individual lives and the Consititution is the specifically written guidebook for a free society. There is no better patriot and no better candidate than Ron Paul. Please consider him and may God have mercy on our declining nation.

Ron Paul is a believer in family values. Unlike many Christian "leaders" and Republican politicians who have admitted to adulterous affairs and/or been married multiple times, Dr. Paul has been married to the same woman for fifty years. He and his wife have been blessed with five children and seventeen grandchildren.

Mike Huckabee on Illegal Immigration: The Kids Matter
By far the most frequent and hysterical accusation we're seeing is that Mike Huckabee is perceived to be "soft" on illegal immigration. To help set the record straight on Mike Huckabee's position, we offer the following excerpts from a February 2005 article published by the Arkansas News Bureau.

    By David Robinson
    Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - Gov. Mike Huckabee got to speak directly Wednesday with Arkansans who [don't understand] his positions on immigration.

One caller to the "Ask the Governor" radio program on the Arkansas Radio Network accused Huckabee of ignoring the law when it comes to illegal immigrants.

"Did you not take an oath to uphold the laws of this land?" asked Chris, a caller from Little Rock.
    "Absolutely," Huckabee replied.

"OK, then why would you turn a blind eye to illegal immigrants invading our country and coming in and basically breaking our laws?' the caller asked.

Huckabee said that he wasn't, and that he believes illegal aliens who try to vote or try to apply for welfare benefits should be arrested.

"If they're caught as illegal aliens, I don't have any problem with sending them back," Huckabee said.

He also criticized Senate Bill 206 by Sen. Jim Holt, R-Springdale, that would impose new restrictions on illegal immigrants in Arkansas. He said the bill could hurt the state's ability to recruit industries based in countries outside the U.S., such as Toyota or Nestle, or a Swiss company.

"If we send a message that essentially if you don't look like us, talk like us and speak like us we don't want you, it has tremendous economic repercussions," Huckabee said.

Huckabee also sought to dispel certain perceptions about the benefits that illegal immigrants are getting in Arkansas.

Huckabee repeated to several callers that illegal immigrants do not receive welfare benefits or food stamps or free health care. They do get free public education for their children, but that's required under the Arkansas Constitution, Huckabee said.

"And frankly I think we would want to make sure that their kids were getting an education because an educated society is a society that can work and do a job and do a better job and make money," Huckabee said.

As for allowing immigrants to receive free prenatal care, Huckabee said that's part of his pro-life sentiment as well as that of Amendment 65 of the state constitution, which says that Arkansas considers life to begin at conception.

"I believe that because it's a human life, then by our law and by our constitution even that unborn child is an Arkansas citizen because he or she is going to be born in this state," Huckabee said. "The prenatal care for the entire pregnancy costs less than one-third of what one day in the neonatal unit at Children's Hospital would cost if the child has complications at birth."

I was opposed to Mike Huckabee because of his position on Immgration. He was first choice since last year. I actually prayed that he would enter the presidetial race. I glad.

Up then I heard about his record on immigration. How he allowed illegals to get welfare benifits in his state and how charged racism the repeated cries to shut the borders.

So Im not a smitten withh him as I was in the begining. In fact I lose hope altogether. But If Huckabee got the nomination. I'd vote for him. There no one else. Besides he's a likable guy.
I liked Duncan Hunter. But I don't really know him. How can we really know a man until he gets in the white House.

I still like Hunter more the Huckabee. But If Huckabee is the Choice. I guess God is the one who made it.

God Bless Everyone and God Help on the illegal immgrant sitution.

I think that Huckabee will be a good pick for VP. Romney being conservative is a front, but I do believe he has what it takes to improve the economy and for domestic issues. Terrorism is a big ? with him. If that is the team, I think it will be sucessful. For the GOP to get the WH you need a slightly right moderate pres and a conservative VP.

We know Huckabee from way before he ran for Governor, and have seen him grow in many fine qualities of leadership. He has really passed the test of character as far as I can see. He would make a strong president and I think he has what it takes and what this country needs at this time.

Growing up, I had illegal friends from another country. So I understand their plight. However, Our laws are very good and fair. We do not need to change them. to appease law breakers. We need to stop the flow. Deal kindly to ones that have visas that are expired. But send back those uninvited and that came here with out a visa.

The full intent of the mexican Government, with the help of our preisdent, is to erase the borders and to make north America trading block. This about money. Not the love of the illegal aliens. It's about a surf class. It will surely open the door to a islamic invasion and bring back slavery to our borders. I've heard the protest. They want to take over this country and call it Atzlan. They are going use muliti Cultuarism, mulit religions, and they are embracing islam. Because of Greed, the slave trade is big in the islam world and in China. With liberation theology they want exchange of America wealth with the third world. They want to bring to north west. This will surely reastabish slavery of the worst kind. Islamic Slavely means much blood shed and sorrow. It is wholey evil and Anti Christ.

Both Africa and South America suffers porverty because of one thing. Greedy Corrupt leaders. They oppress and steal from their own people. The west and America is not to blame for their porvery. It start with their leaders. This could very well happen in the US if we continue to go on this greedy SPP path and erode our borders and Christian Culture. Our Sovereinty is from God. We are a haven for the whole world.

    Danny,
You misunderstood my point. My including the abolitionist movement was a response to your statement that there was very narrow circumstances in which Christians should consider breaking the law. You said it could only occur when we are told by the government not to practice our religion or a false god is imposed on us.

In regards to the rest of your post when I have I accused? When have I questioned your faith? I believe this is a forum where we are open to sharing ideas and opinions that everyone may not agree with. I don't feel the least bit threatened when others, including yourself disagree. I do however get frustrated when you question my faith.

Let me tell you about my life. I have a ministry to low income families, many that include illegals. I have had the privilege of praying with, loving and caring for them in a variety of ways. I don't challenge their legality. That's not my role. God has made it clear that we are to care for the aliens and strangers amongst us. If this is unchristian, unloving thing to do then I'm sorry. But I will continue to love them with the love of Christ. And if the government came to me today and told me to stop caring for illegals, I would continune my work. Because that does go against the religion that God would have me practice.

    mcfbc,

He have you ever read Uncle Tom's Cabin? Have you ever heard about the Abolishnist movement? All were Christians. It start as far back 1600 you can read it in the annals of America by the encyclopedia Britianica. The actual begining of African slavery began as far back in the 7th century with islam. that is well documented. We had a war over it to stop it.

As for Rosa Parks Our Country has twice created unjust unlawful laws like legalized abortion and segregation. One was over turned the second has yet to be stopped. The innocent blood crys out.. If you encourage illegal envaders (la Raza) who have boasted that they are going to take over this land and have burned the American flag. I question that you really are a christian. You colud careless about truth and only accuse. You certainly make any excuse. Still as only to accuse me. Then why are we arguing about? Why do still question me? Do I have right a opinion that is different than yours? Most hyprocritical.................

    believe what you want.

    dannygirl,

I was going to agree with mcfbc, however it seem sthat disagreeing opions are not what you want.

What I thought was ironic about your "letter" was that you kept saying I just want someone who has the money and is well known. If you look at Huckabee, that statement is entirly false. He has barly any money to run a campaign on and even less notarity. However, his fame is growing, not where it needs to be yet, however I feel God is going to bless him.

ANother thing, I don't care so much about politics unless it involves something moral (i.e. bibilically based). You can have your border fence, your super highway, I don't care much about stuff like that. I care about homosexuality (same sex marriage, not allowing it), aboration, not allowing pastors to speak against sin, so on and so forth

  • Mon Oct 29, 2007 10:30 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    Danny,
I appreciate your response. Let me ask you a question. Was it okay for in the time of slavery for Christians being involved in the smuggling of slaves from the south to the north in order to give them their freedom? This was illegal. Was it okay for Rosa Parks, who claimed to be a Christian, to sit at the front of the bus to protest discrimination in the south? An act that was illegal? I am not saying that we should allow people to just have a free run across our borders. I am saying that the simple act of builidng a fence and rounding up 12 milliion illegals is not the answer. I am saying the laws as we currently have them written are bad. Just like I am sure you and I would both agree that laws that allow abortions are bad. They need to be changed. And I think immigration laws need to be changed as well.

By the way, what do you think it means to be a Christian nation?

  • Mon Oct 29, 2007 10:10 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    mcfbc,

What ever......We can then, agree to disagree. You have a free right your opinions as I mine.

But for arguement sake. This whole illegal Aliens invasion is about open boards. it is about the love of money. About not paying American's a fair living wage. About creating a surf class and destroying our border therefore destoying our soveriegnty. this has everything to do with our national security and the islamic Jihaad threat. This has evreything to do with the nation of Israel and Christiandom. America is the most Christian nation in world. We have Judeo-Christian history. Then it's about iif you are going to obey the laws of the land. Where does the bible say to disobey the laws in the land do what you want? The only time we can disobey the law, if you are really a christian, is when our leaders tell us not pratice out religion or impose a false god on us. Other than that we must not break the soveriegn laws of the land.

If you read the bible read ezkiel 38-39 about borders. A land with out walls. Meshech (one who draws by force) and the house of togarmah (house of Bone) Scull and bones. The Masonic lodge and Islam. This is spiritual. This isprohecies. Every world war was started over this. 1912. Open borders in europe led to wwl and concluded wwll.

You can receive it or dismiss it. The choice is yours. I'm not going to argue with you or continully debate this. I hope this precious word is not wasted on you.............................

    But whatever dude.

    dannygirl,
Are you saying that someone who is a Christian cannot be as you put it pro illegal alien? I am looking in my Bible and I don't see any place where that is a measuring stick for faith. That is one of the measuring sticks you have for looking at Hucakbee's faith. Im sorry to say this but I am also pro illegat alien. I dont' use my country's welfare or sovereinty as my measuring stick for how I look at issues. I think we need to use the Bible first when addressing our world. And I see a whole lot more about loving aliens and strangers and taking the Gospel to the world. It looks to me like God brought a good chunck of that world to us and we need to be more concerned about the great commission and great commandment and less about our country's welfare. Don't get me wrong, I don't think we should ignore our security, but I think that throwing up fences and throwing out those here illegally is not going to work. We need to have a more comprehensive plan.

Having said all this, I don't think any less of anyone here because you disagree with me. I don't consider you any less of a Christian. We have to break out of our narrow views of what a Christian is. Our faith should never mirror conservative or liberal ideals. Our agenda should be God's agenda, the great commission and the great commandment.

THE INCREDIBLE COWARDNESS OF THE CHRISTIAN RIGHT TODAY-3

If Mike Huckabee got the nomination and then the Presidency he would still stall on the Border fence. He would give us a virtual electronic fences. Gadgets. The real fence would never be completed. He would reestablish SPP. He would leave the door open for illegal aliens. We would never get rid of Vicente Fox or Calderon. He probably find a way to give illegal aliens amnesty. He can not be trusted.

Wasn't George Bush well known as a Christian? With his Scull and Bones membership. Didn't Bush serenade us while he tried to bring a North American Union under our noses? With his serendipity. Not to mention trying to force multiculturalism multireligions on American. By the way, Serendipity means :an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident. (for the elites, the Scull and Bones brothers) It also comes from old Persian fairy tales of The Three Princes of Serendip of Sara Lanka that was once a Muslim Moors trading post during the height of the Caliphate.

The only one that has the integrity and is strong enough to rid the White House of everything that smacks of Bill Clinton and George Bush is Duncan Hunter. He would clean house. Leaving no residue of Bush or Clinton. He strongly believes in sovereignty of America. And not some globalist agenda. He would break the trade agreements with China. He would bring back American jobs. He would build the border fence. He would send the illegal aliens back to their own countries. He would build up a strong defense for our military. He is a Christian without being a phony. He's not going to use his Christian faith to serenade Christians while destroying America.

Duncan Hunter would put the American people interest first.I would go on further to say, Duncan Hunter would succeed Ronald Regan with his own legacy being even greater than that of Reagan's.

THE INCREDIBLE COWARDNESS OF THE CHRISTIAN RIGHT TODAY-2

2)I'm angry when I see the unfair united effort to shut out true conservatives like Duncan Hunter. Many Christian Conservatives are acting like cowards. They fear men rather choosing the very best person. Even if that person is not well know with a lot of money behind them. They ignore Duncan Hunter's stand on the issues. The people are not listening to him. He has a definite plan and vision for America. All the Rinos are starting copying him. He makes them look bad. The Rinos only see money. For themselves. They are more afraid of Hillary Clinton and the believe all the hype and lies that only a name can win. So we have to choose one of four Rinos or Mike Huckabee. But, Duncan Hunter has all this experience, integrity and Character. Some say he's too Conservative. That's a good thing. Which shows they don't really want a true conservative in the the White House or anything to change.

Hunter has served 26 years in Congress. He is the only one of Republican candidates to have served in the Military in Vietnam. He has a very good and unwavering record on conservative values. Strong on the protection of life for the unborn child. He wrote the unborn Child act in Congress. He has consistently stood on marriage between only a man and a woman. It seems many Christian conservatives are too blind, too weak, and too foolish that they will take just about anything. Believing the lie that they need a well known name to beat Hillary Clinton. Every ones afraid of a woman. Everyone afraid of a woman who has no character, integrity or ethics. What happen to faith?

The four top Rinos Romney, Thompson, Giuliani, and Mc Cain are all the same man. They are all behind SPP North American Union and the illegal invasion, and are very dangerous to sovereignty of the United States. Huckabee is compromised and weak. He claims to be a Christian, but he is every bit in agreement with SPP and is pro illegal Alien. No matter what they all say now when they are running for President. I believe Huckabee will turn just like George Bush.

THE INCREDIBLE COWARDNESS OF THE CHRISTIAN RIGHT TODAY:

You seem have a bias no different from that of those in the Republican party that are determined to force one of the four Rinos or weak compromised Mike Huckabee down our throats. After you know Mike Huckabee's well documented record on immigration and how Pro SPP and pro illegal Alien he has been. He even charged this country with racism. You still say you believe he's coming around. Because that's what America needs. A Presidential Candidate that may or may not keep his word because he had to change his stand just to get the Christian Right Vote. This is weak compromise. Here is Huckabee in his own words on his web site trying to have it both ways. He says "close the borders now", but: "We need to create a process to allow people to come here to do the jobs - plucking chickens, tarring roofs, picking fruits - that are going unfilled by our citizens. They must have a tamper-proof, scannable I. D. with a finger or retinal scan, so that their employers know they belong here ". It's all about money. Low wages creating a surf class.

You said to me that Huckabee's record on abortion is no different than Duncan Hunter. You are wrong Duncan Hunter is better. He wrote many Unborn Child bills. He wrote the Border fence bill. He was the Chairman on the Arms Committee. He wrote bills on Marriage between a Man and a Woman. Hunter is a far better man. Huckabee is weak and compromised. Which I fear you are too. Knowing this man's record and having to coax him to "he's coming around" as you put it.

Is it because of fear that Dr James Dobson, Tony Perkins and Phyllis Shlatley chickened out on the third party threat? Both Dr James Dodson, and (turn coat) Tony Perkins make no sense. They dislike the Rino choices, threatens a third party then, chickens out. Dr. Dobson openly rejects Thompson twice. Rightly so. But then he would back Romney. The homosexual loving Mormon? Both Thompson and Romeny are the same man. But Romeny is so two faced he has to go through a door sideways just to fit those two heads of his.

I just want to say that this is the problem with the republicans and the GOP, "who can beat the democrats?" Don't vote with that mentality!!! Vote for who believe's what you believe, who stand's up for what's right and just, who stands on the only word of God the Holy Bible, who matches up with your morals. Forget who will win, Discern who God wants and who stands on God's word and vote for him!!!

BTW, THAT'S MIKE HUCKABEE!!!!! if you are a conservative christian? I don't see how you can even think about voting for someone else!!!

Huckabee can beat Hilliary or Obama. But the better man for the whole country is Duncan Hunter.

While I realize you are a Ron Paul supporter..and believe me I would support Ron Paul over many candidates in the field. Don't you find it just a tad improffessional to make fun of the name of a fellow conservative?

    Huckebee's Okay,

But Duncan Hunter is better. Sorry to disagree with you ProfessorX.

Mike "Huckleberry Hound" WILL NOT beat Clinton or Barak Obama. He ALONE cannot do it, and he is not the only who can. Ron Paul is, by far, the ONLY true conservative who'd restore Constitutional government. FORGET Huckabee!!! Another guy from Arkansas?? Haven't we learned from Bill Clinton?????

    VOTE RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT!!!
    VOTE RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT!!!
    VOTE RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT!!!
    VOTE RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT!!!

Huckabee is presidential material and is alone able to defeat Hillary/Obama. I am now convinced that those wealthier donors to Romney's, Giuliani’s, and Thompson's campaign have wasted their money and if they continue, are wasting their hard earned money on candidates who do not have voter appeal or substance. As a member of the younger generation, I will tell you point blank, Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson DO NOT connect with us.

Listed are just some of the reasons why I switched my vote to Huckabee:
    1. Huckabee can think on his feet.
    2. He is personable.
    3. He is real.
    4. Huckabee considers the poor and less fortunate.
    5. Huckabee is extremely knowledgeable about various issues and communicates with confidence.
    6. He is Pro-life and Pro-family.
    7. He is witty and competitive.
    8. As governor, Huckabee is the longest proven executive leader among all the nominees.
    9. He demonstrates wisdom, humility, and self-control.
    10. Huckabee is completely understandable and communicates with great depth.
    11. Huckabee has a consistent conservative track record.
    12. He is noble, honest, compassionate, bold, also attentive to all the questions he was ever asked about WITHOUT being all over the board and WITHOUT sounding scattered.
    13. Huckabee is clearly the toughest on border and national security.
    14. Huckabee speaks without annoying hesitations and does not utilize vacuous speech.
    15. He has earned the respect of Afro-Americans and Hispanics since he was THE ONLY top ranked one who valued and respected them by attending the latest ethnic sponsored republican forum.
    16. He is direct and uncompromising about the flat tax system.
    17. Huckabee is very focused and he is all about accomplishing measurable goals.

Huckabee is the ONLY candidate who can beat Hillary Clinton. Face it. It’s all over. The Huckabee campaign must be financially fortified. As the Fox poll demonstrated Huckabee took the lead with 27% of the vote Giuliani was his closes rival with only 11%. Huckabee was the most favorite among the average voters even without being financially supported by a few wealthy donors and some conservative talk show hosts. (Ron Paul’s stats were not relevant among Republican voters because he is a libertarian.) Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson have sought to buy their popularity and have relied on their antiquated legacies to cover up for their lack of substance and leadership integrity. They will lose at the end.

It’s the people who will decide on their next president, NOT a few wealthy donors from various Masonic Cult organizations (http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-869614609770971945). The masons are trying to influence this election and ultimately don't care which party is in power, just as long as their political puppet is in place. Clinton, Romney, Giuliani, Obama, Thompson, and Warner are all masons. The people have spoken. Huckabee will win.

Can we just send an email of complaint and then have it taken off because people are just flagging for no good reason.

I agree with everything Maggie said! I hope I get the chance to vote for Huckabee since I don't live in one of the early primary states. But I pray for him often and I've donated to his campaign.

I am a hopeful Huckabee fan. I want to have an opportunity to vote FOR him, not just AGAINST Hillary.

I don't like Rudy. The way he conducted his marriage, the way he cheated, the way he treated his wife and children at the time, all make me feel this is NOT a man I could vote for to be President. He announced to his wife that he was leaving her in a PRESS CONFERENCE. He moved his mistress into the home where his wife and children were still in residence. To me, the only difference between Rudy and Bill is that Rudy married his "intern".

I want a candidate I can vote for while really believing in them. I strongly feel that Mike Huckabee is a man of good character and conviction. I don't agree with him on everything, but I do believe that he will put the country first, and will use sound judgement. I can't say that for the others who are running.

On the social issues he is a good conservative. On issues of taxes, I don' think most Americans (no matter the party) mind paying taxes, as long as they are not misused.

I just hope we have time to really get his message out there and he gets the news coverage he deserves!

    So...Give a Buck for Huck!!!
