Trans World Radio Head to Step Down

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

The head of the most far-reaching Christian radio network in the world recently announced his decision to step down next year after 11 years as the ministry’s leader.

David Tucker, executive officer of Trans World Radio, will officially end his term on Apr. 30, 2008, and assume the role of providing counsel to the board over the course of the transition.

“I have very much appreciated working with our board, especially as our new members have brought great energy, vibrancy and passion to the governance of our ministry,” Tucker said in a statement.

He noted several global trends which influenced his decision and the board’s ultimate acceptance of his resignation.

“We live in a world of change and nowhere is change felt more than in the area of communications and technology, creating new mediums, new channels and new opportunities to communicate God’s Word around the world,” Tucker commented.

“This, coupled with the continuing accelerating of globalization, significant shifts in Asia with the growing economic powerhouses of China and India, and the maturing and much-strengthened global reshaping of TWR, place the ministry in a unique position to capitalize on these emerging trends.”

The TWR board has appointed a search committee to oversee the board’s search for the ministry’s next leader.

Tucker, 63, is only the third person to hold TWR’s top leadership position since the ministry started in 1954.

“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to David for his 11 years of dedicated service to TWR, first as chief operating officer and then in the combined role of CEO and president for the last five years,” said board chairman Thomas J. Lowell.

Lowell, who was TWR’s president and CEO before Tucker, will assume the role of interim CEO.

The board has praised Tucker for several accomplishments during his tenure including: establishing a new global vision for ministry, known as the Global Strategic Plan; growing in number of languages aired from 180 to more than 200; implementing a servant leadership model; and strengthening partnerships around the world.

“As we look to the future, TWR will be seeking an individual who can continue to build on our organization’s strong foundation of ministry while crafting path that will ensure sustained growth and impact around the world for many years to come,” Lowell said.

Trans World Radio (TWR) is a global radio ministry with programs in over 200 languages and dialects aired from more than 2,800 outlets around the world, including 14 international broadcasting locations, as well as local medium wave (AM), shortwave, long wave and FM radio stations, direct-to-listener satellite broadcasts, cable audio systems and the Internet. TWR’s broadcasts reach millions of people in over 160 countries each day.
