Huckabee Surging in Iowa with Evangelicals

By Michelle Vu|Christian Post Reporter

Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee is gaining ground in Iowa among evangelicals attracted to his straight-arrow record on abortion, same-sex “marriage,” and family values.

Republican presidential hopeful, Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee greets with people at a rally at the Mars Hill Academy Christian School Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, in Mason, Ohio.

The former Southern Baptist preacher was up until recently considered the underfunded and understaffed long-shot among Republican presidential candidates. However, a boost in endorsements by prominent evangelical leaders, a spike in donations, and a rise in polls has placed Huckabee among the first tier Republican contenders.

In particular, the former Arkansas governor has drawn attention with his advancement among evangelicals in the early voting state of Iowa.

One poll last week showed Huckabee in second place and another showed him in a dead heat with front-runner Mitt Romney, according to CNN.

Support from conservative Christians is driving the Huckabee wave in Iowa; Christians compose about 40 percent of the state’s GOP vote.

“Gov. Huckabee stands on the issues I stand for,” said Pastor Darran Whiting to CNN. “Socially conservative as far as being pro-life, as far as being pro-family.”

Huckabee’s Christian supporters, a growing number of which are pastors, praise his anti-abortion and anti-gay “marriage” record as well as his ease in speaking their language. The former preacher is known to naturally interweave biblical stories and cite verses in his speech.

“We don’t question where he’s at; we don’t question what he believes. He’s one of us,” said Matt Reisetter, a young evangelical leader who signed onto the Huckabee campaign this month.

Huckabee’s campaign staff has reflected his growing popularity in Iowa and the nation. Recently, he more than double his staff from six to 14 people and expanded the campaign’s workplace.

“Huckabee is a very good candidate in the sense he makes a very good appearance,” said Bob Schieffer, CBS News’ chief correspondent in Washington, according to CBS. “I think that Huckabee actually has a chance to win other there (Iowa)…If he does, that puts a whole new spin on the race.”

A recent CBS News/New York Times poll shows Rudy Giuliani in third in Iowa at 15 percent and all other candidates in single digits including Fred Thompson with 9 percent.

According to the poll, Romney leads at 27 percent and Huckabee comes in second at 21 percent, with a five percent margin of error.

The Iowa caucus day is Jan. 3 with the next state on the campaign calendar being New Hampshire. Currently, Romney dominates New Hampshire with 34 percent in the poll with John McCain and Giuliani both trailing at 16 percent, according to CBS.

Duncan Hunter. He's stronger than Huckabee is in every issue. Hunter is a strong christian too.
Check out what Huckabee says about stem reach. He 's says he supports the use of existing line. However he does not think life should be created to be destroyed. That is a contradiction.

1- If you disapprove embryonic stem research and have no intention of using it, then why would you use the existing line/remains of dissected unborn Children at all? these are dead dissected Children.
2- The White House ha allowed this back door compromise for three years now. There were only four lines (dissected pre born babies), how con these lines never run ou?
3- They don't run out because even though the government does not fund them they still allow private investers to continue this research.
4- These embryonic lines a new victims of embryonic Research. The supply does not run out.

Then Huckabee is weak on defense, illegal immigration, national security ,and sovereignty. Huckabee has compromised and show special favor for illegal aliens encouraging breaking American law. Making ourlaws a joke. He is for the NAFTA free trade and SPP North American Union.

I have nothing personal against Huckabee. I feel he is not good enough and for a christian, he is very compromised. Especially on the sanctity of life issues.

Duncan Hunter is superior to Huckabees in in his record. He wrote many bills pertaining to Preserving the life of unborn children and outlawing abortion, no funding for stem cell research, border and immigration security, strong defense, American sovereignty. He wrote many bills for the protection of Pre babies. He wrote the border fence bill. He wants to bring back jobs to America.

With all these facts in mind, those of you who claim you are a christian and really want to see abortion end. Should really consider and take a true stand for truth and integrity.

And yes, I'm QUESTIONING your integrity and Christianity.

At this point, is there honestly any other presidential candidate we CAN support? I can't think of another one who takes anything close to a Biblical stand on the important issues of the day. I do think it's important to stand against the killing of innocent babies, to take a stand for the Biblical definition of marriage, and to stand for America's sovereignty not to be subverted to the control of the UN. There are other important issues too, and I am concerned about them as well. I just do not see another candidate taking a Biblical stand on any issues.

"I’m curious though, do you think it is a good Christian response to Islamic terrorism to shove a gun in a muslim’s face, and ask him “convert, or die”? (Oh, I know that is a bit of an extreme question, and probably inappropriate to ask, scratch that.)"

No it would be very inappropriate to shove a gun in a Muslims face and tell them to convert or die. Thank goodness Christians don't do that. In case you're unaware of what's going on in this regard please see "Voice of the Martyrs" or "Compass Direct" both very good Christian persecutions sites. Actually I consider this a very serious subject, and if you really wanted to "scratch that" you would have deleted it.

"How okay are you with collateral damage, innocent Muslims killed alongside say (what we think is) a legitimate military target, do you have a problem with that, or is that a cost you’re willing to pay?"

I am a pacifist and would not agree that it's ever OK to kill.

    didymus,

Thank you for posting that debate. I have never read it before and it has made me rethink certain aspects of Huckabee's candidacy. I want to make an informed decision, so appreciate the positing.

    Thanks

Serious question: How okay are you with collateral damage, innocent Muslims killed alongside say (what we think is) a legitimate military target, do you have a problem with that, or is that a cost you’re willing to pay?

It might nice for a change to have a president that really does understand what the muslims are, and that their whole religion is based on conquering the world to serve a false god. Chris Matthews (assuming that is who Matthews is) may someday get it when a muslim shoves a gun in his face and says convert or die.

didymus - I want to really thank you for posting that.

Supporting Huckabee is a really bad idea! Why? Because, if he becomes president, he’s going to kill a lot of people in the name of God.

    In a recent debate,

"MATTHEWS: Governor Huckabee, same question [do you believe the president needs authorization of Congress to attack strategic targets in Iran, nuclear facilities?]. Do you need Congress to approve such an action?

HUCKABEE: A president has to [do] whatever is necessary to protect the American people. If we think Iran is building nuclear capacity that could be used against us in any way, including selling some of the nuclear capacity to some other terrorist group, then, yes, we have a right...

    MATTHEWS: Without going to Congress?

HUCKABEE: And I would do it in a heartbeat.

    MATTHEWS: Without going to Congress?

HUCKABEE: Well, if it's necessary to get it done because it's actionable right now, yes. If you have the time and the luxury of going to Congress, that's always better. But, Chris, the most important single thing is to make sure.

MATTHEWS: And if Congress say no, what do you do?

MATTHEWS: If Congress says no, what do you do, Governor?

HUCKABEE: You do what's best for the American people and you suffer the consequences. But what you don't do is what you never do, is let the American people one day get hit with a nuclear device because you had politics going on in Washington, instead of the protection of the American people first."

So, in other words, if you think they’re thinking about bombing us that’s all you really need to actually bomb them (and since the religious right believes that Iran is always just fantasizing about bombing us, that makes our bombing them inevitable). And is he going to bomb them in the name of God? You bet. He said the other day,

“People look at my record and say that I’m as … strong on terror as anybody. In fact I think I’m stronger than most people because I truly understand the nature of the war that we are in with Islamo fascism. These are people that want to kill us. It’s a theocratic war. And I don’t know if anybody fully understands that. I’m the only guy on that stage with a theology degree. I think I understand it really well. And know the threat of it is absolutely overwhelming to us.”

Theocratic war? His theology degree is going to help him fight this war? And I hear he is now getting support from Tim LaHaye. This isn’t pro-life, this isn’t family-values, this is crazy, this is an apocalyptic crusade, this is a pro-collateral damage, slaughter festival.

Mike Huckabee is doing great in Iowa and the reason is pretty clear to anyone who has listened to all the candidates and knows their records/positions . He is the one candidate who is undoubtedly, down to his core, passionately from his heart right on all of the value issues that are/should be vitally important to values voters. Thankfully, in addition to that, he is also clearly the best communicator in the race on either side. Besides that, he has a great sense of humor, is very likable, ect.. The one and only thing, in my opinion that will prevent this GREAT values candidate from winning the republican is a lack of money. I urge all values voters to get behind Huckabee at this critically important time and and support him in every way you can.
