Study Reveals 'Modern Epidemic' in D.C., Worst AIDS Rate in America

By Michelle Vu|Christian Post Reporter

WASHINGTON – The District of Columbia has the worst rate of AIDS out of any U.S. city, revealed a new report that claims HIV/AIDS there has become “a modern epidemic.”

The rate of AIDS in the district is twice the rate of New York and four times the rate of Detroit, according to the study released by D.C. health officials this week. One in 20 city residents is thought to have HIV, while 1 in 50 residents have AIDS, said Shannon Hader, head of the District’s HIV/AIDS Administration, to the Washington Post.

In total, about 12,500 people were known to have HIV/AIDS in 2006, according to the report.

“HIV/AIDS in the District has become a modern epidemic with complexities and challenges that continue to threaten the lives and well-being of far too many residents,” the report states.

The 120-page report is the city’s first AIDS update since 2000, and indicates a stark rise of HIV cases among African Americans and through heterosexual contacts.

“The information in the report is being presented as evidence that everyone can get HIV/AIDS, yet evidence is overwhelming that homosexual sex and IV drug use are sources of the virus,” said Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, director and senior fellow of Concerned Women for America’s Beverly LaHaye Institute.

“We owe it to the public to stress that promiscuity is the basic problem,” she continued. “We must teach our children that the healthy way of life is abstinence prior to marriage and fidelity within marriage. We must create a new cultural environment where adults are encouraged to treat sex with the respect that it deserves; sleeping around is not just foolish, it is also dangerous.”

As World AIDS Day – Dec. 1 – fast approaches, many churches and Christian organizations are spearheading AIDS awareness campaigns.

Saddleback Church, founded by “Purpose Driven” Pastor Rick Warren, opened its third annual Global Summit on AIDS and the Church on Wednesday.

Rick and his wife Kay Warren have emphasized their belief that the Christian Church is the only truly global organization “existing in every country and in thousands of indigenous people groups that are not represented by the Untied Nations or any multi-national corporation.”

Some 2.3 billion people who profess to be followers of Christ make Christianity the largest organization, widest network and biggest volunteer force on the planet, the Warrens pointed out.

"I see more and more individual churches, pastors and believers who are recognizing that this is what the Bible teaches and that there is nothing strange about it," Kay Warren told Reuters.

Meanwhile, World Vision, one of the world’s largest Christian humanitarian agencies, will release its findings of an international survey on the opinions and perceptions of AIDS among residents of seven nations at the United Nations on Thursday.

Trans World Radio, a Christian radio ministry, said it has addressed the HIV/AIDS issue since 1986 on its radio programs.

“The HIV/AIDS pandemic is so large that it can’t be stopped without the combined efforts of leadership in the public, private/profit and faith sectors,” stated Kay Warren, who along with her husband advocates for government, non-governmental organizations, and churches to work together to combat the epidemic.

Some 33.2 million people living with HIV/AIDS, including 18 million women and children living with HIV/AIDS, according to UNAIDS/WHO.

If the city leaders of Washington, DC, are serious about stemming the tide of this epidemic, they can travel to Uganda and learn a huge lesson there. Here's a link:

I wonder if African-American men on the "down low" are transmitting HIV/AIDS to women.

AIDS can be beaten, but it wont. We could eliminate drunk driving. But we wont. We can eliminate drug use, domestic violence, teen pregnancies, murder, stealing, etc, etc...but we wont. Because it all rests on free choice.

GMG -- I'm not sure if you caught my point or caught it all too well. In my school situation, we can discuss the HIV lesson so we know all the facts, the T -cells, the white blood cells, the lymphatic system, compromising the immunse system, yada yada. The kids know the facts.
The point I made is the look of my student at that basketball game, a look of bewilderment. AIDS? HIV? Us??? Are you serious? All in one look.
At our Lutheran school, we ground in Scriptures, loud and clear. But I think sometimes our scientific discussions are more like adventures in Hawaiian culture. We can learn of leis and luaus, volcanoes and earthquakes. Nice to know, but we live in some rather frozen environs these days. Hawaiian is not us! Still Hawaii is there, and though we don't live there, we deal with the facts. Ah, but the lure of Hawaii!
AIDS precautions are drilled into teacher and staff here (used mainly in those nauseating moments that call for vinyl gloves, bleach spray, red plastic bags, Voban, and a strong constitution that refrains from revulsion, if you know what I mean). Other than this, we have no use for AIDS as real life. As we teach abstainance as the best and only course of beating HIV, we have to rub shoulders with the world that offers "precautions" that are worse than stop-gap.
I thank you for for insights, GMG, Prophet, Jester. AIDS can be beaten; in our science class we offer solutions to the facts.

The choice is simple. What's harder, dying from and infecting others with AIDS, or abstaining from sex outside of marriage? The penalty for sin is always worse than the pleasure gained from indulging in it. But like brute beasts, many lumber into the bog never considering where their steps are taking them until it is too late. Wake up America and world! Jesus really was right all the time.

No. We will never break it. For that very reason that you brought up. Abstinence. So simple, but so hard. Eliminate drug use. Simple, but hard. Meanwhile, America is hemorhaging to death and people are running around worrying about how they're gonna wipe the blood up.

So, if the schools do such a good job on teaching HIV/AIDS, why do the kids not get it? Is it because no one connects it to real life? Or do they think that it's just something else that you take medicine for that cures it, so it's no big deal. Do they know we can't cure it?

In real life, we don't really know how many are HIV positive, because you have to be tested to find out, and many either haven't been tested, or they have contracted it since last being tested. Scarey thought, I think.

jester - "GMG...this is just another case of generational curse. The children are paying for the sins of their parents. We need to break that curse, and it can only be done through prayer and a move of God"

Tis so true. But will we break it? The father of lies never moves us from stepA to stepZ in one effort, oh no, then we would see it clearly. Nope, he moves us in tiny baby steps so we're easily fooled. Like all these conferences on AIDS, seems like everyone's so busy talking about the innocent victims that the main cause of the whole thing gets "forgotten". How satan laughs when we skip right over morality issues.

Wierd point to ponder. I watched our grade school basketball team play this weekend. Quick elbow, bloody nose. One confused child taken from the floor and five minutes delay to make sure the blood was removed from the floor, no blood was on the uniform, and the child treated before being allowed back on the court (which happened after two quarters. He looked ridiculous with nostrils stuffed with gauze.
One impatient boy, wondering about the ado, asked what's up? I simply said, "HIV." He looked at me funny, but we explained the precautions set up by the state high school athletic association (WIAA) in the matter of blood/body fluid treatment/disposal. A precaution that was set up to retard the spread of AIDS stopped the St. Paul-Bethany A-team boy contest.
Do you know why he looked at me funny?
    Rhetorical question.

Yes...DC..the cess pool of corruption, greed, immorality...where else would this take place at?

GMG...this is just another case of generational curse. The children are paying for the sins of their parents. We need to break that curse, and it can only be done through prayer and a move of God.

There must be a significance that AIDS is greatest in DC, the capitol of our nation. I mean, what does this tell us and where are we headed? Not exactly a firm and solid setting for the "seat of government" eh?

right on proph. they're too lazy to have self-control. they let life control them instead of the other way around. if it feels good...it must be good...so DO IT! yeah! Who cares if AIDS is skyrocketing, teen pregnancies are growing, divorce, homosexuality, drug use, drunkeness. All these are results of lack of self control.

  • Wed Nov 28, 2007 2:53 pm Agree: 4   Disagree: 0

yeah, isnt it amazing that something so simple escapes most people's minds? It's so simple, but no one wants to do it. If people would actually practice abstinece and get themselves off drugs, the AIDS epidemic would probably drop close to 0. I know its different in thrid world countries, but i'm talking about here at home.

abstinence and staying sober= the cure to AIDS! Oh my gosh! Who Knew?
