How a Small-Town Preacher Became a Rising White House Contender

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

In front of cameras, behind the pulpit and amid a crowd looking for direction, the man of the hour – Mike Huckabee – seems at ease wherever he’s at. Maybe it’s because of his past jobs as TV broadcaster, small-town preacher, and Arkansas governor that has shaped him into a man Americans feel comfortable calling their neighbor, yet confident enough in his political know-how for some to want him in the White House.

Republican presidential hopeful and former Arkansas Gov., Mike Huckabee speaks to employees, Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at the Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, Iowa. Huckabee has vaulted from nowhere into second place in the Republican presidential race, riding a burst of support from evangelicals, Southerners and conservatives into eyeshot of the lead for his party's nomination, a poll showed Friday.

Huckabee’s political career, according to some, might have started when he was Arkansas lieutenant governor, but his views on divisive issues like abortion, same-sex “marriage,” and immigration were set long beforehand by the Bible. During early stages of his presidential campaign, Huckabee even took a huge risk by defending the biblical creation story against Darwin. Although some may feel uncomfortable with the idea of a preacher turned politician, Huckabee is not in the least troubled by the thought.

The ultimate goal of both a preacher and a politician is to improve lives, said the presidential hopeful in an interview with the New York Times.

“For me, it was never an either-or,” Huckabee said about his two careers. “The realm you do it in is less important than that you do it.”

Moreover, Huckabee years behind the pulpit trained him to win votes.

“There are four basic things to succeed in either politics or the pastorate,” said the former Baptist preacher.

“You have to have a message. Secondly, you have to motivate volunteers. You have to be able to understand and work with all types of medium to get your message out,” he continued, “and you’ve got to raise money.”

Huckabee was born in Hope, Ark., the same city as former U.S. president Bill Clinton, and dabbled in the fields of politics, communication, and religion before the age of 20. He delivered his first sermon at 15 and pastored a church three years later, according to the New York Times.

He graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ark. Then he enrolled at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Texas, where one of his classmates was Rick Warren, who would later become one of the best-selling authors in history and one of the most influential pastors in America.

After a year at Southwestern, Huckabee left the seminary to work for televangelist James Robison near Dallas.

Then at the age of 26, Huckabee, who wanted to return to his home state, took on the position as full time pastor of a declining small church in Pine Bluff, Ark. He convinced the small-town church to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to renovate the “dingy, barnlike” auditorium with comfortable padded pews, stain-glass window, and a sound system in preparation for his plan to put the church and himself on television.

Advertisements were posted and soon families arrived. Huckabee then expanded his television idea and soon owned a low-power television station – the only local broadcast in Pine Bluff.

After six years, he moved to Beech Street First Baptist Church in Texarkana where he not only pastored the church but became the town’s all-purpose newscaster. He converted an old Winnebago into a news van by loading it with broadcast equipment. Continue »

Here's another 1. 3.5 years ago, we bought a log cabin in AR. Soon I noted the absence of color in the county. A neighbor said, "Ahhh, they know better than to come around here." He told me he'd recently had a major home appliance delivered to his home from a larger neighboring town. An Afro guy drove the truck. He laughed, saying he never saw a guy get back in his truck & get outa here so fast. Bergman & Zinc are neighboring towns, local headquarters for the KKK, he explained. Sorta gave me chills, not of friendliness.

It is becoming more and more clear that America will have possibly one more chance at national revival. A lot of that could depend on who ends up in the White House in January of '09! It could either be a godless, pure-politician with nothing but a legacy in mind. It could be a seemingly religious person who, after 42 months turns out to be the anti-christ. It could be a breath of fresh air that promotes and secures the support of the faithful in restoring God's rightful place in a nation founded by His followers. Just think. We get to decide!

We know that Mike Huckabee is not the most talented candidate and he does not follow the Constitution on a number of issues. We don't even know if Mike Huckabee is the most Christian candidate, just that he is the most vocal about it. I encourage you to look into Ron Paul who is not pandering to anyone to get their votes, just speaking the truth. He is Christian but doesn't shout about it because he believes that Christians are not so naive as to vote for the first person who says, "I'm more Christian than you because..." He spends whatever time the media gives him to talk about real issues that are affecting the country and doesn't "play dumb" when asked the hard questions and is always consistent no matter what crowd he is talking to. Americans need to realize that we don't need another president that would be "nice to have over for dinner." We need the smartest, most qualified person for the job who knows more about economic, domestic, and foreign policy issues than the average person.

Huck has a problem though with his support of the parole of the convicted rapist. It was more than a passing interest he had in supporting the action of the Parole Board. Three of them said there was heavy influence and he even wrote the convicted rapist supporting the parole route instead of commutation. His judgement and decision-makeing process need to be taken into account. This will not play well with moderate voters in the general election if he happens to get nominationl

In my opinion, HyperionOverseer, Huckabee is the best. You can check out his positions on his website if you're not familiar with him. And if he did become our next president, I think it would be a blessing to our nation that we desperately need but don't deserve. He's still a long shot, especially in the anti-Republican environment we're in now, but I think that if the election came to Hillary vs. Huckabee, he may have a chance. She comes across as cold and calculating to most people while Huckabee's warm and inviting demeanor could charm the electorate. Again, it's a long shot but by no means impossible.

I really think Huckabee is the most talented and most genuine Christian who has had the chance to become president in a very long time. I try to pray for him and his campaign and on his website he asks fellow Christians to pray for him and thanks those that do. When have you ever heard of a politician doing such a thing? That's why I love him. I truly admire the strength and courage he has in proclaiming his faith in such a secular (and at times anti-Christian) environment.

    Huckabee is wonderful!!!!!

I don't know what Catalyst is talking about because Huckabee has taken a strong Christian position on nearly every issue I can think of. And most of the secular media think that his devout and unwaivering Christian positions are going to be his downfall, yet he continues to stand by his beliefs. If he weren't a real Christian, as Catalyst suggests, why would he remain strident on what everyone thinks is his biggest weakness? And why would he continue to boldly proclaim to everyone of his Christian faith when practical political wisdom says to keep it out of the public arena? No, Catalyst, Huckabee is one of the best candidates that we as the Christian Right has ever produced.

And as far as Tom Tancredo goes, he is not as solid as you claim. (I agree with you about Hunter, but he's kind of a poor speaker) No, Tancredo has said that we should drop a nuclear bomb on Mecca. That is neither a good idea in terms of our security as a nation, nor a very Christian position. And his position on immigration is getting dangerously close to racism. Now, I'm for securing the borders as much as anyone (building a wall and the whole bit) but Tancredo's rhetoric sounds like he's playing to the anti-Hispanic crowd. I'm not doubting Tancredo's faith, I just don't think he'd make a very good spokesman for Christians in America.

Catalyst, please tell us more about the "disgusting traitorous, discriminatory policies" you're referring to.

I'm concerned about Huckabee's trustworthyness and his affiliation with the FRC....I do believe only Ron Paul has the interest of the people at heart and is the only true defender of the constituion..and our freedoms..

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free"
    (John 8:32)

The above quote from the Holy Scriptures, is very appropriate when it comes to Mr. Huckabee. To me and my friends and associates, this man is so transparent that it is difficult to understand how anyone, especially a Christian, could be deceived by him. In reading the piece written by Jennifer Riley, I am wholly convinced that my first impressions were correct. The man has plotted and schemed since he was a child, and that in itself is unnatural and scary. It wouldn't surprise me if he had made a pact with the Devil. Mike Huckabee is as republican as Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. In truth, he is as far left as another so-called preacher, Rick Warren. They are so easy to read, even for secular on-lookers. You only have to hear the words that come out of the mouths of these evil men to know what their agenda is. They have learned that to position yourself in Evangelical circles is the key to it all. The time is overdue for Christians to start using discernment and to be honest with themselves. Being deceived in these matters is a choice. There is another biblical verse that refers to such scurrilous elements as Huckabee and his ilk:

    King James Bible
And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. Luke 21:8

For the sake of my country and the future of my children, I pray everyday for the downfall of Mike Huckabee (there is another biblical quote concerning this that I will not take time to write).

As a journalist of many years, I was very disappointed in the quality of the piece by Jennifer Riley. It was not of the standard one would expect of a publication such as 'The Christian Post'. The grammar was poor, the sentence structure awkward, and the cohesion of ideas not well-formed. Another very alarming thing about it was that you actually printed such a glowing article about Mr. Huckabee. This is tantamount to an endorsement and that disturbs me as a reader and voter. The article could well be termed 'SPIN'. Please take a serious look at Huckabee's term as lieutenant governor in Arkansas and the disgusting traitorous, discriminatory policies he brought into law.

Have you ever heard of two good solid men called, Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo? I find it strange that you haven't printed any articles expounding the virtues of them as honest, courageous leaders of the American way of life. I hope I never have to be exposed again to Huckabee in the 'spin zone'!
