Pope: Christian Martyrdom is Act of Love

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

Pope Benedict XVI highlighted Wednesday to thousands of pilgrims that the deaths of Christian martyrs in the past and present are an act of love.

“We should always note that this is a distinctive characteristic of the Christian martyr – it is exclusively an act of love, towards God and towards men, including the persecutors,” said the Pope to crowds in St. Peter’s Square, according to Reuters.

“Christian martyrdom reminds us of the victory of love over hatred and death,” he said.

He spoke from his study window in the Vatican the day after Christmas, when the Roman Catholic Church celebrated the feast of Saint Stephen – the first Christian martyr, according to Indian Catholic news agency.

Stephen, a deacon in the first Christian community in Jerusalem, was stoned to death by a mob in Jerusalem as Christianity began to spread in the region. He was recorded in the Bible as praying for God to forgive his persecutor as he died.

The pope's speech drew attention to the fact that Christians in many parts of the world still face persecution, torture and death.

“It is not rare even today that we receive news from various parts of the world of missionaries, priests, bishops, monks, nuns and lay people persecuted, imprisoned, tortured, deprived of their liberty or prevented from exercising it because they are disciples of Christ and apostles of he Gospel,” he said.

He did not name any specific events of persecution to prevent aggravating the situation. But recently, there have been several notable incidents. Among those are the stabbing of an Italian Catholic priest in his church in Turkey less than two weeks ago, and the burning and destruction of 12 churches by Hindu extremists in India, beginning Christmas Eve, killing at least one person.

The German Pope concluded by inviting pilgrims and Catholics to pray “for those who suffer because of their fidelity to Christ and to his Church,” according to Indian Catholic.

    Prophet-

If you are talking about me... my heart has always been, and will always be touched by the Lord. To believe that one can go through life doing nothing good for other people, and even killing people, and still get into heaven is just ludicruss (think that is how it is spelled)

    Prophet,

Yeah, he shared some general things here on the post but whatever transpired, God was leading all the way.

Really? I'll have to go check it out! He hasn't emailed me since tha day. But it is amazing how God has changed him. He really opened up to me and shared some things. I wasn't sure what happened to him after that happened. He just disappeared.

    Prophet,

Yeah, that is what is so heartbreaking to me; may the Lord touch his heart to the truth :)

    correction: as I commented there . . . . .

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:44 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

God forgive me, but I do find it amusing how when we start supporting our views with scriptures, he sticks his fingers in his ears and starts ranting.
He is a good man. He just can't grasp the deep things of God.

    Prophet,

I went over because we have been disscussing things there as well; guess who showed up as commented there . . . . . . Jester? I praise God for touching his heart afresh; that is something that only the Holy Spirit can do :)

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:41 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Oh, is that where he went. As tempting as it is to go over and start a rucus, I'll just wait here. He'll be back.

    Prophet,

He leaves here just to go over to the article - "Pope Says Family Key to Peace" and post some more jabs.

    Prophet,

I agree; TLIML just posted another comment on the other aritcle, but it is heart breaking to see people held in bondage to ALL traditions of MEN.

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:24 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

I would have to believe that those "pre-conceived" ideas are typical of Catholics. I can't speak for TLIML, but most Catholics I've known have never cracked open a Bible, other than at mass. They don't study the scriptures. They take what the priest/pope says at face value, and never question it. That's the power of the RCC.

    Prophet,

It is disappointing but I do not take it to heart; the seed of the gospel falls on many soils.

    Sorry, I misquoted.
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." Romans 8:1.

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:20 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    Prophet,

He not only has pre-coneived ideas but alos refuses to take scripture for what it plainly says.

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:19 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

He's gone, Online. He's falsely accused us, and then run off. It's a habit I wish he's break. It really is annoying. But no matter what he said, there is no condemnation to them who are called according to His pupose. So, I hope you didn't take his acidic insults to heart.

    Prophet,

It is difficult to have a sound and reasonable discussion with those who misrepresent what you say. Especially when they do not want to comment on scripture :(

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:16 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

That's what I've faced with almost all Catholics that I've had the chance to fellowship with. They are so engrained in tradition and rituals, that they have lost the spiritual understanding.

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:16 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    thelordismylight,

Show me where I said that; you are bearing false witness my friend.

So, why are you a Christian? Was it forced on you?

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:11 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

LOL and Prophet, here you are, completely DENYING that God has power over the Devil. Why don't you just start worshipping the Devil?

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:11 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    thelordismylight,

I knew you were trying to set up a straw man and your responses have proved my first thought. Now you are misrepresenting me and trying to put words in my mouth; this is a poor way to accurately carry on a discussion and an even poorer way to interpret one's statements.

    What does this verse mean?

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them – 2Corinthians 4:4.

God allowed his children to have choice, this choice included the choice to do evil. He allowed the Devil to live in torment, constantly trying to drag man down.

I have a question. If God has power over Satan, then why is there still sin in this world?

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:08 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    Prophet,

I gave my answer the very first time he asked; it is truly aggravating to say the least.

    Prophet-

Yes, good observation. Satan tempts people, but certainly he does not have more power over this world than God?

    Online4Him-

You are saying: Satan is god of this world and God isn't. And yet you have a problem with me saying "No, God is more powerful than Satan, HE rules this world."

24Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

25For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

26The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

27For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

28And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

You said that you understood these passages; however, from your lastest posts, it is obvious that you do not understand this verses.

    "12But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool."

....expecting till his enemies be made his footstool....till his enemies.....be made...
It doesn't say his enemies have been made. It says until they are (be made) his footstool.

    Prophet,

    Hello.

Ok, so you agree that Satan is the god of you. K.

Just go Satanic, why don'tcha. I am sure Satan will put in a good word for you ;)

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:01 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    thelordismylight,

Here, let me explain this small and simple paragraph to you:

The Word of God explicitly says that God is Lord over all; however, it also states that the majority of the world has aligned themselves with Satan. Therefore, because of this, the following passages do describe him as the god of this world.

First sentence - The Word of God explicitly says that God is Lord over all; - (ALL includes the devil).

The last two sentences: - however, it also states that the majority of the world has aligned themselves with Satan. Therefore, because of this, the following passages do describe him as the god of this world.

These last two sentences along with the SCRIPTURAL passages DO SAY the SATAN IS the god of THIS WORLD.

    Get it now?

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:00 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Ok, prophet, so satan is more of a god than God is? wow, such blaspheme.

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 4:58 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

God is the god over the EARTH....satan is the god over the WORLD. There is a difference.

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 4:57 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Satan is the god of this world. Not God.
"But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." 2nd Corinthians 4:3-4

So if God is the god of this world, then He has some issues. Because He is trying to blind the eyes of the unbelievers so that they cannot see the glorious light of Jesus Christ.

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 4:56 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

I understand what those verses say. Now I want your complete opinion. Say yes or no. I know what this is. You are afraid that your friends will disagree with you if you come out and say it. LOL hilarious.

    thelordismylight,

I have already given you my answer here:

The Word of God explicitly says that God is Lord over all; however, it also states that the majority of the world has aligned themselves with Satan. Therefore, because of this, the following passages do describe him as the god of this world.

I also gave my answer here:

In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them – 2Corinthians 4:4.

I also gave you this same passage from your version (catholic); and you still do not understand, wow.

Well, I guess, you can not understand since you said:

I do not care about bible passages.

  • Mon Jan 07, 2008 4:54 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Yes, I believe that the devil has complete and utter power over every single thing in this world. He is god of the good. He is god of the bad.

No, God is the god of this world, he is god of all things good and has power over the devil.
