How to Share Your Faith Using the Blockbuster Films of 2007

By Jane Dratz|Christian Post Guest Columnist

And the top grossing films of 2007 were...

• Spiderman 3 - $336,530,303
• Shrek the Third - $321,012,359
• Transformers - $319,071,806
• Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - $309,420,425
• Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - $292,004,738
• The Bourne Ultimatum - $227,471,070

What do an anachra-superhero, giant green ogre, techno-transformer lover, swash-buckling pirate, boy wizard and amnesiac ex-government agent have in common, besides their wildly successful runs at the box office? For help answering that question, check out the following multiple choice options:

• They're all movie heroes who drew in huge teen audiences
• They're all on a quest that involves searching for answers to an important question
• They're all part of a struggle that pits good vs. evil
• All of the above.

If you answered 'all of the above', you nailed it! Consider yourself a well-informed movie connoisseurs of the biggest hits of 2007, not to mention, a brilliant and insightful observer of the culture!

But stop and think for a minute about the bigger picture here regarding the big pictures of 2007. Why do all of the top films of the year share those three over-arching characteristics?

Perhaps it's because teens are flocking in droves to movies that speak to the most basic human challenges and desires: to find answers to important questions and to understand more about the ever-present battle in this world between the forces of good and evil. Teens know that good story-telling wrestles with the big questions of life in fresh and creative ways, including the struggle of good vs. evil, and all of these movies do that in some dimension or other.

All of these blockbuster movies of 2007 are now available on DVD, making it cheap and easy to plan an intentional evening with your unreached friends who are searching for answers to the big questions of life. Questions like: Is there a God? Why is there evil in the world? and Why am I here?

So pick your favorite hit movie of the year, watch it together with your friends and then use the story line to turn the post-movie conversation toward spiritual things. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

• Spiderman 3: Peter wrestles with the eye-opening reality that he is not all superhero purity and goodness, and that the criminals he battles are not all evil and darkness. Talk about how the Bible teaches that evil lurks inside every human heart.
• Shrek the Third: Why do fairytales always include evil villains? Ask your friends if they think there is a spiritual battle raging between the forces of good and evil in the real world. Share what you believe.
• Transformers: Does your outer image match how you see yourself on the inside? Do you ever wish you could transform yourself into a totally different person? Ask your friends if they think it's harder to transform the inside or the outside of who you are? Describe how your relationship with Jesus has transformed you!
• Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End: Ask your friends what they think happens to people when they die, since there is no "Flying Dutchman" ship to take a person somewhere. Do they believe in heaven and hell? The Bible describes hell as a place of pain and suffering - not quite as funny as what Jack Sparrow experienced being in Davy Jones' locker.
• Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: When Harry returns to Hogwarts for his fifth year, the school is in disarray because many there are in denial about the evil influence of Lord Voldemort. Do you see any similarities in our world to people who deny the existence of a spiritual battle between good and evil? Ask your friends if they believe there is a spiritual battle raging in the real world?
• The Bourne Ultimatum: Ask your friends what they do when they feel guilty about something. Share from your experience the forgiveness you've received through your relationship with Jesus.

Try prayfully planning a movie night with friends using one of your favorite hits of the year. Break out the popcorn and be prepared with some thought-provoking questions and watch to see how God uses you to turn the conversation toward Him.

I responded to another poster but I wanted to directly respond to the content of the article.
Why do we, as Christians, think that we need the latest worldy gimmick to "reach somone?"

We are to separate ourselves from worldly things, not embrace them. We are messengers with a message. Our mandate is to clearly communicate the message, we aren't liable for it's acceptance or rejection by the masses...that's God's job.

Let's open our mouths to our neighbors in a spirit of love and tell them the most important thing that they'll ever hear...the Gospel of Christ. The good news.

Telling someone the truth isn't cruel, on the contrary, it's the most loving thing we could do, and we don't need to use worldy things to do it....language is good enough.

God says it's the spirit that changes people, not our "slick delivery" so let's just be faithful and drop the "Pulp Fiction Christian Movie Nights" ok?

    kaishinden79,
You are painting with some pretty broad strokes in how you describe "Christians and Pastors" but to be sure, there are some bad people in every walk of life and Christianity is no exception.

I think it's fair though, to separate the "teachings" of Christianity with "those who profess it."

Christianity teaches humility and love. If a televangelist craves power and double crosses someone for their own gain; then they aren't what they say that they are...right?

You also mentioned that your cynicism comes from Pastors "always pointing out sin."

Unfortunately, this is a necessary part of Christian life. We should recognize sin in ourselves and be open to correction. Additionally, we are to do the same for a Christian brother or sister with the goal of correcting the behavior. In the case of a "non Christian" sinning, well I'm sorry but that goes with the territory...if you are doing things that you shouldn't, then as a Christian, letting you know that you are going to be punished for what you do is our responsibility. It's not enjoyable, but it's our command.

Everyone on this earth, Christians included have broken God's laws and deserve punishment; there is no question about that. The real question is this: "Are you going to let the petty selfish behavior of some "professing Christians" stop you from understanding clearly your situation before God, repenting of your sins, and putting your faith for your eternal future in Jesus Christ?

That would be the crux of the matter would it not?

I hope you don't think that I'm being rude by being honest about the situation, but with something so important, I didn't want you to misunderstand what I was saying.

Please think about it, you don't know when your last day on earth will be...

to muggleborn - oh I got this cynicism from the church bec. christians & pastors always point to sin!

I think what kaishinden79 is referring to is unethical behavior by pastors and televangelists. There are bad apples everywhere. Lawyers get a bad rap, but I know a Chrstian lawyer who is top notch in morals, lifestyle, relationship with God, church involvement, etc. If you've never been hurt by someone in church, then you haven't been in church very long. People are people wherever you go. That's what makes the church so great. All of us need help in some way or another and we can come together as Christians to spur one another on toward good works!

I also wanted to bring up 'The Wizard of Oz', despite its age, because someone posted about it back in one of the 'Golden Compass' related articles.

They said something or another about it being one of the most atheistic movies ever made, and that it portrayed the ideal that one doesn't need to go look for God, an "invisible wizard" as such, to find true happiness because it's already inside them.

I wanted to tweak this ... just a little ... so I asked the Holy Spirit to guide me on it.

Like Dorothy, the rest of us are tossed into a world of sin, when we run away from God. That world may look magical and colorful, but is filled with strawman reasoning, hollow tin values, and cowardice in facing the truth. Instead of trying to find the things we think we've lost by looking to the false prophets of this world, who try to appear mighty and wise but are only small men with small values, all we really need to do is come home to God the Father, and accept Christ, our Lord and Savior.

God is distanced from us, but has never left, and we only have to accept our Divine Lord's sacrafice on the Cross for our redemption. And we don't need ruby slippers to do it.

Spiderman 3: My favorite comic book hero. Great examples of forgiveness and the peace it brings us. Also illustrates the struggles that all Christians contend with. Peter Parker felt great when wearing the symbiote suit, but later saw through its seductive nature for the evil it was, and what it caused him to do. Shedding the suit brought him redemption. When the suit took over Eric Foreman ... ehem .. I mean that guy from 'That '70s Show', he didn't want to give it up, and it brought him death in the end. Very clear analogy to what acceptance of sin will do to us.

    Christan MAN, Christian man,
    Does whatever a Christian can.
    Shares the Word, opens eyes,
    Dispells atheist myths and lies.
    LOOK OUT!
    Here comes the Christian maaaaan.

    It's been a slow morning.

Gee wiz, kaishinden79. Don't you think you're being just a teensy bit cynical. If I wanted to randomly profile you, I'd guess you were in your mid-twenties (somewhere at the end of Generation-X), and a big Trent Reznor fan.

BTW, how exactly do Christian pastors get people to do "dirty work"? But before you answer that, define "dirty work".

    maranatha7593,
    >> My problem with some of these movies is that 'good and evil' are often so mixed and intertwined, it can be difficult to clearly distinguish between the two. <<
You're absolutely right. But it seems to me that this is why we should use them to evangelize however we can, in light of how popular these movies are. The world has a huge audience, and any way that we can put Jesus center-stage will benefit someone, if we do it for the glory of God.

    >> Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! <<
    Good point. Not to mention,
James 3:1 NIV - Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers and sisters, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

This definitely seems like a pitfall, but if we remain true to Scripture, and ask the Holy Spirit to help us with the words, God will show us the truth. I still have trouble with this once in a while, and try to explain things all on my own, because I have a tendency to want to say things that will make me look clever, even if I believe it's for the glory of God. My arrogance may win an argument from time to time, but it doesn't win the approval of the Lord, Almighty.

... *sigh* I'm off on a tangent, again. I don't think true prophets rely on as much coffee as I do. Anyway, do you see where I'm coming from?

My problem with some of these movies is that 'good and evil' are often so mixed and intertwined, it can be difficult to clearly distinguish between the two. IMHO, these are not great opportunities for evangelism, teaching, or discipling.

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

oh I forgot in bourne ultimatum - after jason bourne has done the dirty work for his own government, he is expendable, thrown away bec. he has no further use. and his own gov't will do everything in their power to blame the dirty work on jason bourne. just like pastors, christians & teleevangelist. after you do this never ending work, give your 10% to god & if the promises did not materialize, pastors & fellow christians will blame it on the same person who did the dirty work.

how can you apply grace to the real world when all you hear is pointing to sin, shame, blame, guilt, fear & an unending list of works in the name of obedience.
spiderman2 shows that peter parker is very exhausted, worn out, burnt out, looses opportunities bec. he has to sacrifice everything for everybody.
in pirates of the caribbean3 jack sparrow & company has to double cross his fellow pirates to save their own skin. just like christians & pastors.
in bourne supremacy/ultimatum the big boss will do everything in their power even to the point of murder just to save their behinds because of greed, money & power. just like pastors & tele evangelist.
so that is my take how these blockbuster movies apply to christianity
