Myths Exposed on Charismatic Christianity in America

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

Charismatic churches are growing in number in the Unites States, but many Americans still have inaccurate assumptions about the particular brand of Christianity, according to surveys released Monday.

Many people believe that charismatic Christianity is almost exclusively a Protestant phenomenon, but research shows that one-third of all U.S. Catholics (36 percent) fit the charismatic classification, according to the new Barna study. And nearly one-quarter of all charismatics in the U.S. (22 percent) are Catholics.

Charismatic Christians are defined in the study as those that say they have been “filled with the Holy Spirit” and believe in “charismatic gifts, such as tongues and healing, are still valid and active today.”

Another misconception is that charismatic churches belong to a strictly separate group of denominations. In reality, charismatic churches have crossed denominational boundaries in recent years. A Barna survey of senior pastors reveals that seven percent of Southern Baptist churches and six percent of mainline churches are charismatic.

There are also widespread beliefs that charismatic churches tend to be small, relatively unsophisticated congregations that are more likely to be led by female pastors. However, research suggests that congregations are about the same size as those of non-charismatic Protestant churches and are also actually more likely to use technological applications – including large screen projection systems – evaluated in the study.

Moreover, charismatic and non-charismatic Protestant churches have the same portion of churches led by a female senior pastor (nine percent).

Charismatic and Pentecostal Christians over the past decade have grown from about 30 percent to 36 percent of American adults, or about 80 million people. One out of every four Protestant churches in the United States (23 percent) is a charismatic congregation.

George Barna, who directed the research projects, commented that the growth in the charismatic and Pentecostal movements in America is not surprising because it matches the current cultural trend in mainstream society.

“The freedom of emotional and spiritual expression typical of charismatic assemblies parallels the cultural trend toward personal expression, accepting diverse emotions and allowing people to interpret their experiences in ways that make sense to them,” Barna explained. “It is not surprising that the Pentecostal community in America has been growing.”

He added that he expects charismatic Christianity will continue to grow.

“We are moving toward a future in which the charismatic-fundamentalist split will be an historical footnote rather than a dividing line within the body of believers,” Barna predicted. “Young Christians, in particular, have little energy for the arguments that have traditionally separated charismatics and non-charismatics. Increasing numbers of people are recognizing that there are more significant arenas in which to invest their resources.”

For the most part, the profile of the typical charismatic congregation is nearly the same as that of evangelical, fundamentalist and mainline Protestant churches. Four out of five (80 percent) have a full-time, paid pastor; the senior pastor is, on average, 52 years old (the same as other Protestant churches); and the weekly adult attendance is nearly equivalent to other Protestant bodies (82 adults at Pentecostal gatherings compared to 85 adults at all Protestant churches).

Yet there are significant differences between charismatic and non-charismatic congregations.

Non-charismatic congregations tend to have a larger annual operating budget, $149,000, compared to the budget of Pentecostal ministries with $136,000. Similarly, non-charismatic churches on average spent more in paying their senior pastor, $47,000 annually, than charismatic pastors who receive a compensation package averaging about $42,000.

Yet perhaps the biggest distinction between the two is the level of education of the pastors. A significant majority of senior pastors of non-charismatic churches (70 percent) have graduated from a seminary. In comparison, not quite half of charismatic pastors (49 percent) have a seminary degree.

The report is based on a nationwide telephone survey conducted by Barna in December 2007 among a random sample of 1,005 adults, age 18 and older. It also contains information from a nationwide phone survey among a random sample of 1,220 senior pastors of Protestant churches.

GMG hasn't been feeling too well. The Doctors don't knowwhat is wrong. However, the doctor she just recently went to see said something about her gallbladder.

Many houses that have been destroyed in the area I live in are still left the way they were after the Hurricane. It cost money to tear down a house so I guess that is why. These homes are beach front home, were built up in the air, and were made out of wood, plus they were real old houses. But even some concrete houses were damaged. The eye of the storm went right over the area I live in. a lot of houses were flooded. The city is requiring thast they raise their houses 4 ft off the ground. These houses are concrete. I don't know. It is a costly endeavor.

“The Hebrew Meanings of the 10 Generations Mentioned in Genesis 5”

That was interesting; the message is supported by what God’s Word already says.

I would propose that the last week of the 70 week prophecy is one complete consecutive time period. Futurists take this last 70th week and place it into the future without any biblical basis.

I have found this to be of interest too. I don't unerstand it but if it is true then we might be entering into Daniel's 70th week very soon. Something to pray about anyway.

    GMG

It was great hearing from you.

I can't understand why your daughter and her husband are having financial problems. I mean $4500 a month is quite a bit. I wonder what is really going on?

Do the kids miss their mom and dad?

You haven't missed much on CP, at least as far as the posting is concerned. Same kind of stuff being said. The conservatives speak basically with one voice, the Catholics are together in their stuff, and their is no change in the atheists/evolutionists.

Did you know that ireneous was a Baptist before he became a Catholic? Him and online go at it with each other all the time.

chicago24 was raised a Baptist and went to a Catholic seminary. I think he is now Catholic. His dad is a Baptist Minister. I wonder what he thinks about his son's conversion to Catholicism?

    May God help these people.

Our atheist/evolutionist buddy Jerry2 and all his aliases is still the same.

Glad the storm didn't do anything worse than what it did.

Have you gotten your plumbing put in yet?

Things in general are about the same with me.

Did you get my email I sent you.

    Hey star,

Been gone a while, I know. Just a quick note. Still have the kids. Took Christian to the dr. for lymph nodes that were active, he's on antibiotics now. Hard to get things done on a regular schedule with my munchkins. Have no idea how long we will have them, maybe forever? Just kidding. They're having money problems, guess they think we can be summer babysitters. We love these kids, but we weren't planning on being their parents, sig-h-h-h.

Hope all is well with you. Don't even get to read hardly any articles lately, been so busy. It's hot, we just had a major storm, even took the kids down into the "fraidy hole" the other night because of cloud rotations a few miles east of us. No tornado on the ground, but super winds and torrential rain. Split a couple of our trees. Everyone fine though.

Don't know when I can really spend any time here, just have to play it by ear. But we're fine overall, just tired and super busy.

Will talk with you later, I hope not too much later :(

MuggleBorn left me a messsage on "Miracle Woman Wakes Up after Death..." . Did he ever ask you about how you came out of the Catholic Church?

The kittys that Christian and Suriah picked out are they going to be indoor cats?

That is good that Suriah hasn't broke any eggs yet. It is good to hear that your hens are laying eggs again. Have all the eggs hatched yet? How many chicks did you get?

How is your brother-in-law doing? Has he healed up from his injuries from when the horse threw him sometime back?

    How was the birthday party?

Is Christi going to get the kids this weekend?

Did you get your drainage pipes laid?

Did you ever print out any of those Bible pictures from that website I gave you?

Nothing new has happened to me. Everything is the same as it always has been.

    Talk with you later.

    Hello,

To my knowledge, Christi has found neither a new job nor a new babysitter, and is still with the sad excuse for a husband she saddled herself with.

The momma kitty has either moved her baby, or something else happened to it. It was there the following morning, strong and with a full belly. So only time will tell.

msnChris -- hard to understand why someone would go catholic, but guess that's his problem. None of the denominations are perfect I firmly believe, but RCC has so much paganistic ritual and such an arrogant, prideful attitude it's unbelievable. Not that we shouldn't strive for Truth, but rather to think that somehow "God's Mouthpiece" (read pope) on this earth is indeed ordained by God to be inerrant, as if any mortal can be such a thing. Not to mention history shows differently, and even by their own admission. I think I'll stick to working on growth and knowledge and understanding, letting God convict me as I go about my earthly struggles.

Busy trying to get things done outside, got quite a sunburn today from wearing a sleeveless shirt. Christian tried to give one of our cats a bath in the dog/duck water today, it's a wonder he didn't get scratched from head to toe. Suriah is busy "training" King, our 1 yr. old pup, and is actually doing a pretty good job. She's going to be the animal person for sure, just like her Grandma! They've each picked a kitten of their own, an "outside kitty" that will live at Amma's and Papa's house. They carry those babies, who are 8 weeks old, around like rag dolls. They also like to pick handfuls of grass to feed the horse. Kids and critters go together we think (except, of course, when they try to give the cats baths!!!) They like to help feed, and Suriah's job is to get the chicken eggs. She's not broken one yet!

Well, time to go, tired as usual, the kids keep me hopping along with everything else. Needs to be several of me these days.

Oh, and have you heard from Muggle lately?

    Take care.

    Hello,

Will try to get in a quick note while the babies are sleeping. No tornadoes here, though they did have one a bit north of the prison the other night when David was working, got all the inmates into basement rooms, he said that was quite a chore as they wanted to go out and "look"!! No further prison trouble, got it cleaned up pretty fast, 3 dead, 6 hospitalized, 12 others hurt. All gang related, how pathetic.

Yes, I have seen ERV/Jerry/etc. Funny thing, agentorange doesn't even recognize who he is, they're doing a lot of back slapping. I think that's pretty funny. And ifeelfine continues in the camp of the non-christians, you'd think he'd start wondering at himself after awhile wouldn't you?

Saw your other two ID's, didn't know they were you. Think manpleaser needs to come up with something additional now? I like believer, the new guy. And that gal lawyer (can't remember her ID off hand right now). See the new one today, spawn of satan? That one makes me shudder, can't believe he got away with that one. Been tempted a couple of times to post, but just don't have the time to deal with it.

My daughter is making tentative noises about getting the kids this weekend, but I'll believe it when I see it. Not planning on anything until it happens. I'll miss them dreadfully when they go, but I'm so far behind on all the things needing doing that I'm getting really antsy. We had a brand new kitten yesterday that they got to see, as the momma deposited it on the step to an outbuilding, for some unknown reason. New momma, she's a bit on the wild side, hard to get close to her. But I did manage to get it close to her, and this morning it's doing fine so far, so I guess momma figured out how to feed her. Cute little thing, callico like her mom, but is dark where momma is light. Hope we can get her tame, which will be hard to do with momma so wild.

Well, need to go take care of critters and do a little more outside work, so I'll drop by later when I can. God bless, hope everything's going okay your way.

Hope you are doing OK GMG. How did the birthday party go? Has your area been affected by the tornatos? Everytime I hear tornatos touched down in OK I think about you. Has the prison gotten back to normal since the riot the other day?

jerry2 has morphed into Vaho, x, then God, and now ERVs. Friday he went balistic and flagged every entry I made that day. I think it was him, but I am not sure. It wasn't long after I psoted this comment to God:" God, I thought you didn't believe in 'God'." that he went balistic.

I created a new name, Grace2, just so I could post. I know why CP can't stop him. They will not let you create a new ID with an already existing email address. So, you have to create a new one but it doesn't have to really exist. I tried it so that is how I know. I have an ID, manpleaser, that is connected with a non-existing email address. CP accepted it. Grace2 is connected with a valid email address I have that is not the one I use as star2. pattiepie has another valid email address I created just for her.

    Hello,

Haven't had much time to come by. Hope everything's ok. Hello to Online too! =)

Gonna go to David's folks Wednesday, his two aunts are visiting from Calif., and it's his sister's birthday, so we're going to spring for the gas and go visit. Will make for a long day with the kids, hope they hold up okay and don't get grumpy!

They had a riot today at one of the prisons, two inmates killed, around 18 injured and hospitalized, no personnel hurt praise the Lord!!! It was gang related. I'm so glad David doesn't work at one of the maximum security prisons, that's usually where this kind of stuff happens. This particular prison is known for it's troubles, and they have had a correction officer actually killed there, I think it's been a couple of years now. We decided a long time ago that he wouldn't work at anything more than a medium security prison, and I'm so thankful for that.

Just dropped by for a sec. Let me know how you're doing.

I haven't seen Prophet either. He is very busy I am sure. The last time I got an email from him he had been elected by his church to be a deacon plus his pastor asked him to do a series on aplogetics. I guess he is real busy doing that plus his other ministry he has in the church. He heads up a CARE ministry. That is where if there is anyone in the Church that needs help, like mow the lawn, paint the house, go grocery shopping, and etc. they can contact him and he will find someone in the church to do it or he will do it himself. Then his wife has a ministry to people who come out of prison. They help these ex-cons get back on their feet in society. I don't know all that involves. Any way he is very busy. For a living he drives an 18 wheeler delivering food items to resturants and maybe some other kind of businesses too I am not sure.
