Churches Decry Israel's Treatment of Gaza

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

Churches in the Middle East denounced Israel’s blockade of Gaza as an “immoral act” that has cut off the entire country from proper food and medicine.

The Rev. Munib A. Younan, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, called the blockade of Gaza “illegal collective punishment, an immoral act in violation of the basic human and natural laws as well as International Law,” in a statement issued Jan. 22 – a day before Hamas militants destroyed the Gaza-Egypt barrier.

Younan and other Holy Land church leaders added that the blockade “cannot be tolerated anymore” and “the siege over Gaza should end now.”

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak had ordered the strip sealed off Jan. 17 because of persistent rocket fire from Gaza into Israel. But on Tuesday, the same day the letter was issued, Israel eased the blockade slightly transferring fuel to restart Gaza’s only power plant, according to The Associated Press.

“To deny children and civilians their necessary basic commodities are not the ways to security but rather throw the region into further and more dangerous deterioration. This siege will not guarantee the end to rocket firing, but will only increase the bitterness and suffering and invite more revenge, while the innocents keep dying,” the statement admonished.

The blockade “imprisoned” 1.5 million people “without proper food or medicine,” the church leaders voiced with concern. The punishment left large parts of the Palestinian territory, which also borders Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea, without access to electricity.

True to the church leaders’ words, a week after the blockade Hamas-linked militants knocked down the border wall separating Gaza and Egypt. On Wednesday, more than 50,000 Palestinians flooded into Egypt to stock up on needed supplies such as bread, oil, cheese, according to The Associated Press. Others carried crates of Coca-Cola, television sets, tires, furniture, car parts, shoes, generators, cleaning products, goats, chicken, cigarettes and even a motorcycle.

Egyptian officials as of Thursday have not attempted to reseal the broken border. Authorities have only begun to try to control the masses so they don’t move deeper into Egypt.

U.S. and Arab officials said Wednesday that Egypt assured it would soon reseal its border with Gaza, according to AP.

Yet despite sympathy for trapped Gazans, the Christian leaders also acknowledged that Palestinians firing rockets at Israel give reason for people to see justification in the blockade.

The leaders advised Palestinian officials “to unite in ending their differences for the sake of their people in Gaza.”

“Put the differences aside and deal with this crisis for the good of all human beings, demonstrating that you care for your brothers and sisters who have suffered enough already,” they said.

"We pray for the day when the people of Gaza will be free from occupation, from political differences, from violence and from despair. We pray for the Israelis and Palestinians to respect human life and God's love for every human life, and to take all possible measures to end this suffering," said the church leaders.

Heads of churches in the Mideast that signed the statement included (Roman Catholic) Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah, Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III, Patriarch Torkom II Manooghian of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church, Archbishop Anba Abraham of the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate and Anglican Bishop Suheil Dawani.

Egypt reportedly told the United States it expected the Palestinian exodus from Gaza to end by midday Thursday.

Khanson do you obey this verse of Hadith as good Muslim?

Sahih Bukhari (52:177) - Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

Or do you turn your back on Al Qur'an, Hadith and your Muhammad's sunnah

slacker "Have you ever researched historic Israel, the isrealites where there long before the arabs."

How many centuries ago was that--MANY, MANY. Assuming you are living in the US on what may have been land belonging to the American Indian as recently as the 19th C. Would you be willing to hand over your land/home to them if they demanded it back? The Jews that were in the ME before the formation of Israel should have continued to coexist in relative peace with their Arab neighbors instead of the Zionist being allowed to flood the ME with European Jews and forcing Arabs from their land to establish Israel. Forced evictions of the Arabs from their land-thats why there will be no peace until the Jews do what the Christians of the New World did to the Indians- exterminate them. It would have made more sense to establish a Jewish homeland in Europe, after all, it was the Europeans responsible for the Holocaust, not the Arabs.

Muslims welcome Jews to live in their hearts but not as invaders. Jews invaded Palestine under the British Empire and displaced Palestinians. If Jews had lived in a small portion of Palestine thirty three centuries back, so lived red Indians in USA. Would you ask white Americans to go back from where their ancestors came from - definitely not. So your claim to invade and occupy Palestinian Muslim and Chritian land is not justified but actifies resistance against Jews in Palestine.

I am deadly against Terrorists and their Terrorism. If you are little conscious about the issue, Israeli attrocities gave birth to Terrorism in the ME. American invasion of Iraq doubled the uprising of terrorism in ME. American invasion of Afghanistan increased terrorism manifold in Pakistan and Afghansitan. And still you have cheeks to wash your mouth against it. You guys (not exactly you) invented it, now radical Muslims practice it.

The best way to minimise terrorism is to withdraw from Occupied Palestine, Occupied Iraq and Occupied Afghanistan. For your defence, use massive aerial power (USAF) but provide humanitarian assistance to those who wish peace with you. Feed them, make them self reliant and support them to fight your war against terror like Musharraf, Hosni Mubarak and Noor Ala Noor Maliki. Well this is my humble opinion not an enforcement.

    Slacker is completely correct.

The Palestinians have been maintained as those poor people displaced by the formation of Israel by the othe Arab nations. Their suffering could have been done away with if any of the surrounding nations, ones which they were previously citizens of might I add, had gotten involved and opened their arms. They talk about the responsibility of Israel of protecting them, meanwhile they don't do a thing. These are their Muslim brothers. Certainly there's something in the Koran, in addition to the parts about killing the non-believers, about supporting those fellow Muslims in need of assistance. There's plenty of money to contribute towards arming the Palestinians with rockets and other weaponry but none to provide food or medicine? And additionally, the Palestinians should be helping themselves. Perhaps by electing real leaders rather than offshoots of terrorist organizations. It's not surprising that people who are willing to kill innocent Israelis are also willing to steal from and ultimately kill Palestians by raiding international aid funds.

Have you ever researched historic isreal, the isrealites where there long before the arabs. If all these other middle eastern countries would open their borders to the palastenians then possible there would be peace, however the borders are closed between isreal and egypt, syria, jordan and lebanon.

The suffering is mutual, although I will concede that the Israelis have the more advanced equipment. The main difference between the Muslim world and the Christian world is that despite the persecution of the past, the Christians are moving forward and trying to build a relationship. The pope has publicly proclaimed that the Jews were not responsible for the death of Christ and the superstitions of Jews drinking the blood of gentile children during passover have abated. The Muslim world, on the other hand, while perhaps tolerant in the past has slid into fanaticism and a lack of education and civility that is shocking. The fact that they hate the Jews enough to brainwash their children into becoming suicide bombers is alarming. My rabbi put it best: "When they love their children more than they hate us, then there will be peace in Israel."

What ever you wrote, you wrote in your defence. But the fact remains, Muslims never hurt the Jewish people as Christians have hurt you guise in Europe until 1945. In fact Jewish Golden Era was Muslim empire from Spain to Egypt and from Egypt to Turkish territory where Jews enjoyed full freedom economically and religiously. Though considered as Zhimmi (responsibility of State) they were part of Spanich Muslim Empire and in the Government.

I wonder, who had sown the seeds of hatred in the hearts of Zionists against Muslims especially Muslims of Palestine. Millions of Palestinians suffered because of you zionists, how could you face Lord The-God (Elohim) on the Day of Judegment.

Shocking that I would feel a need to respond to this thread.

For starters, at the time of the formation of Israel, there was a proposal for a bifurcated state, which was rejected by the Palestinians. Likewise, subsequent proposals have been rejected.

Second, the Arab world has maintained the Palestinians as a public example of the "inhumanity" of the Israelis for generations. While they could have just as easily assimilated and taken in these unfortunately displaced individuals, giving them a place to live and work, they instead made the decision to allow them to live and die in woeful conditions for no other reason than making Israel look bad. Certainly the Israelis have behaved in a heavy handed manner towards them but considering that they are surrounded by hostile people in every direction, many of whom shoot missles and conduct suicide bombings, the reaction is not impropper.

Third, the Palestinians' leaders have been worse to the Palestinians than the Israelis could ever be. The Palestinian leaders have been tasked with improving the lives of their people and moving the nation forward, instead there is rampant embezzlement where little of the international aid given reaches the people themselves. If you don't believe me, track down Arafat's wife who's living well off the billions of dollars her late husband pocketed.

Fourth, there was little interest in Israel until they actually rejuvenated the land. The "Palestinians" (and I use the quotation marks since they didn't exist as a people until they were dispersed by the creation of Israel) had no interest in the land as it was at the time of the formation of Israel. In fact much of the land was acquired via sale by Arab landowner to Israeli farmer, because they believed the land to be largely worthless and incapable of supporting crops. Suddenly the Israelis, through their ingenuity and hard-work, have improved the soil enough that it is fertile and all of a sudden the Palestinians are crying foul deal.

Bottom line, Israel shouldn't have to go anywhere or worry about the Palestinians and their fabricated and self-sustained plight. Israel is the ONLY nation in the middle east who is operating as a democracy that recognizes all facets of their society, jew and arab alike. Moreover, despite being the size of Rhode Island, they are able to contribute more to the world economy (not including natural resources which just happen to be under certain people's feet) and mankind's progress than all of the Arab nations combined.

Well, isn't that terrible how Israel is treating these phuthetic Palestinians?!! After all, Israel has only had 4,000 rockets fired at them since they turned Gaza over to the enemy in their brilliant "land for peace" deal. And now big bad Israel is being mean to the folks in Gaza. Leave it to the Lutherans to denounce Israel for merely defending themselves. But the antiChrist spirit has been mocking Israel and our Blood Covenant God for years, so what else is new?! At some point when Israel gets a Prime Minister who's not a coward, like Olmert, Israel will quit acting like such wimps and just wipe out all their enemies. The Palestinians aren't an ethnic people anyway. They're just a bunch of squatters who were living on Israel's land, and now they think they deserve the place, even though they have no covenant for such with God Most High. Anyone who thinks that you can negotiate a peace settlement with these demonized Muslims is crazy. You can't negotiate with people whose prime goal is the anihilation of the Jews. Until they forsake the premise there will be no peace so Israel might as well get used to the idea that they're just going to have to go back into Gaza and take it over. They were getting rocket attacks when they still occupied the land.

I suppose I'm a little confused here. Who is blockading who? Why should I allow my enemy free passage back and forth over my national border? If Egypt is so friendly with the Gazans why do they have a wall to keep them from crossing into Egypt freely? I guess not all Muslims stick together. "palestinians" don't want peace under ANY circumstances - they want the annihilation of Israel and nothing less. They were offered a state when the land was originally partitioned about 40 years ago. They turned it down!

To deny that Israel belongs to the Jewish nation, is to deny that God exists. To those that are siding with these Egyptians who call themselves Palestinians, is this your intention, to deny the existence of God?

    I wonder.

In the beginning was The Word, and The Word was with God, and The Word was God.

Is this what you deny? If you say that these Egyptians who call themselves Palestinians have any kind of claim to this land, than this is to deny God. Is this what you are saying?

If not, then why should Israel not defend itself?

These Egyptians who call themselves Palestinians lob missiles, mortars, grenades, bullets, and probably even yesterday's trash at Israel. The world does nothing. However, let Israel defend itself and the world is throwing their weight around to get them to stop this "humanitarian crisis". The U.N., which seems to have an Islamic agenda lately, steps in and cries "foul".

Where does it stop? Easy, and difficult. It stops when Jesus becomes the center of Israel's attention. He told them He would not come back to them until they recognize Him. The difficult part is, this will not occur until sometime towards the end of the end of days. This is prophesy.

Take heart O Israel, you are not alone. True Christians support you in your fight against these who call themselves inheritors of the land. We know the Word, and we know it belongs to you. Anybody who claims to be a Christian, and does not support you, is not a Christian at all, but a political activist instead, and does not know the Word of God at all.

    Ultimate Questions
John Blanchard - Clear, concise and compelling presentaton of the gospel. The greatest, the ultimate questions, are about God and your relationship to him.

    http://www.the-highway.com/ultimate_questions.html

"We must have the full message. . . 'deliver the whole counsel of God'. . . . It starts with the Law. The Law of God ... the demands of a righteous God, the wrath of God. That is the way to bring men and women to conviction; not by modifying the Truth.... We must confront them with the fact that they are men and that they are fallible men, that they are dying men, that they are sinful men, and that they will all have to stand before God at the Bar of Eternal Judgement....And then we must present to them the full-orbed doctrine of the Grace of God in Salvation in Jesus Christ. We must show that no man is saved 'by the deeds of the Law', by his own goodness or righteousness, or church membership or anything else, but solely, utterly, entirely by the free gift of God in Jesus Christ His Son. . . . We must preach the full-orbed doctrine leaving nothing out-conviction of sin, the reality of Judgement and Hell, free grace, justification, sanctification, glorification. We must also show that there is a world view in the Bible ... that here alone you can understand history-past history, present history, future history. Let us show this great world view, and God's Eternal purpose.... Let us at the same time be very careful that we are giving it to the whole man ... the gospel is not only for a man's heart, that you start with his head and present Truth to it ... Let us show that it is a great message given by God which we in turn pass on to the mind, to the heart, to the will. There is ever this danger of leaving out some part or other of man's personality... Let us be certain that we address the whole man-his mind, his emotions and his will." ~ D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones The Weapons of our Warfare pg. 21-22

No Christian Church or Church leader would ever side with anyone who is against Israel. For it is written: "I will bless them that bless you and curse them that curse you." To do so, would be to fight against God.

Also, it is a sign of the "last days" we are in, for the Lord said He would bring them back to their land and in the end "all nations woul come against Jerusalem".

In the New Testament we find Paul saying: "But at touching the election, they are the beloved for the father's sakes."

They still exhibit a hatred for Isreal and berate them at every opportunity while overlooking, even condoning, the terrorist activities. Why should we report this? The liberal media should not give them headlines. You never saw David Korish's Christian "sect" headlines when he criticised US or American Churches. Why do the mid east churches get such credence and placed in such high esteem to warrant a headline report? This is wrong!? Is the media also anti semitic - anti Isreal? Readers would perhaps appreciate the responses of mainline American churches regarding this same mid east issue. I totally agree with RBB. How can a Christian Journal publish an article like this, it is a disgrace. Everyday the people of Southern Israel face barrages of rockets fired at them indiscriminately. The cowards who fire these missiles then hide among the civilian population.

How would your country deal with this daily attack. Do nothing, I doubt it. Invade in force with massive casualties, most definitely. In my opinion, an economic squeeze is the most humanitarian and decent option. Let the murderers know that the people they represent suffer hardship due to their works.
