Obama Defies One-State Wonder Theory

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

WASHINGTON – Presidential hopeful Barack Obama wowed the nation over the weekend with his wide first place finish in South Carolina, defying the odds and challenging skeptics who said the Illinois senator would not claim another major victory after a string of close defeats.

Democratic presidential hopeful, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., greets people in the crowd after a rally in Columbia, S.C. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008.

Obama won Saturday across demographic lines and only lost to chief rival Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) among voters 65 and older, where Clinton beat Obama 40 to 32 percent, according to the exit polls.

Overall, Obama won 55 percent of the South Carolina votes – more than double Clinton’s 27 percent. Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina came in third with 18 percent.

“Tonight, the cynics who believe that what began in the snows of Iowa was just an illusion were told a different story by the good people of South Carolina,” Obama said to supporters Saturday.

South Carolina was particularly critical for Obama to prove that his win in Iowa three weeks ago was not a one-state wonder, but that he is a genuine challenger to the well-established Clinton, who beat Obama in New Hampshire and Nevada.

“This was a very difficult campaign for Barack Obama,” said Donna Brazile, a CNN analyst who led former Vice President Al Gore’s presidential bid in 2000. “He had an uphill climb. The establishment of the Democratic Party, you know, they’re clearly backing Clinton and put tremendous resources in the state to defeat Barack Obama.”

Thom Mann, a political analyst for the Brookings Institution, noted ahead of Saturday’s election that “[t]he concern all along has been the possibility of Obama, in spite of his broad, nonracial appeal, running poorly among whites.”

But Obama laid those fears to rest and won a significant portion of white voters, taking in nearly a quarter while Clinton and Edwards split the remainder. He also won among voters under the age of 65 and among woman voters, who helped Clinton win in New Hampshire and Nevada.

However, there is no argument that Obama did particularly well among black voters, who made up half of Saturday’s electorate, according to exit polls. The Illinois senator, who is trying to become the nation’s first African-American president, is estimated to have taken in more than 80 percent of the black vote.

South Carolina’s black Christian leaders can be credited for significantly helping Obama gain ground with black voters. It is well-known that the African American community is overwhelmingly religious and black pastors have great influence over their flock.

Last month, the Obama campaign had proudly unveiled a committee of top African American religious leaders, including nearly 130 senior pastors from some of the largest and most prominent churches in South Carolina. The endorsements of the prominent black leaders helped boost Obama’s image as the candidate that African Americans should vote for.

The Illinois senator also frequented churches across the state to speak about faith and politics and threw several high-profile Gospel concerts in South Carolina, featuring Grammy Award-winning artists, to appeal to black religious voters.

Beliefnet.com’s God-o-Meter has consistently rated Obama as the Democratic candidate that spoke the most about God in his speeches.

But not every Christian is enamored with Obama. Conservative Christian right organizations such as Focus on the Family and Family Research Council have denounced the presidential candidate as “extremely” liberal pointing to his support of a strong civil union law that gives benefits to gay partners; allowing minors to cross state borders for abortion; and opposition to the abstinence program in favor of sex education that promotes the distribution of condoms.

“This man is no friend to anything we (values voters) hold dear,” said Tom Minnery of Focus on the Family recently during a primary special presented by the ministry’s Citizenlink publication.

For most supporters, Obama’s appeal is his seeming ability to bring about change and unite foes. The Illinois senator is running on a platform that promises to unite people with opposing views and reform a broken Washington.

Next up for the Democratic candidates is Super Tuesday, when more than 20 states will head to the polls on Feb. 5. The Republican candidates, meanwhile, will first face off on Jan. 29 in Florida before also facing Super Tuesday. Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona had won South Carolina exactly a week before Obama.

something is obviously not right here.

We're reminded once again of remarks by John Howard, the Australian prime minister and staunch ally in the war on terror, who reacted to Obama's candidacy, and his plan for an early troop withdrawal, by saying, "If I were running al-Qaida in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and be praying as many times as possible for a victory, not only for Obama but also for the Democrats."

    May God help us all-

Every Christian should clearly understand the Biblical priniples of leadership as outlined in scripture. Wether it be the leadership as outlined in the Newtestament (see Titus and Timothy) or the judicial leadership as set up through Moses-

A Christian cannot (it would be sin to do otherwise. Show me where in the Bible it says to place ourselves under ungodly authority) vote for a man who does not first honor God. And our Leaders must have a mature understanding of God and his revelation (the Bible).

Right now the only one I see who comes close is Ron Paul. Even Huckabee, though he may understand certain aspects of Christianity (yes, I konw he used to be a pastor) seems entirely ignorant of our constitutional foundings and the actual role of the federal Government as laid out in the Constitution.

And Agent- You evolutionists have tried for a long time to say that most of the founding Fathers of this Nation were Diests. Let me enlighten you. A Diest is someone who believes in God, but then let the world do it's own thing. That means that God would have had anything to do with the world during the time of the founders.

If they were mostly Deists... They wouldn't have made a day of prayer and Thanksgiving to God. They wouldn't have included the necessity of belief in the Almighty and recognition to him in pretty much every State Constitution. They wouldn't have constatly recognized that our soverign rights came FROM God, including our right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and our right to self preservation. It is ONLY because of THOSE God given rights that we have our country today... and that we have to put up with constant dribble and false information from people like you.

    ::begin quote::
Are you serious? He’s never attempted to play Christians and milk them for their vote like Mike Hackabee has tried.
    ::end quote::

I am sorry, but if you were to look back at how Mike Huckabee has acted since even BEFORE he was in office. He has always referenced his Christian faith and made an issue out of it long before he was in any office.

Therefore, I think it is unfair to say he is "playing" the Christian card. It's simply because he is a Christian that is going to speak "Christianese" and appear as though he is playing it up. It is simply WHO he is.

In the same way it would be unfair to say Obama is playing the black card, or Hillary is playing the Woman card. It's simply WHO they are, and it's going to come out and it's going to appear as though they are using it to gain an advantage when it's really not fair to say (short of asking them personally) whether they are using it in an appropriate way.

Now if you could go back and show us whether Mike didn't speak in the way he does until he ran for office, THEN I could agree with you that he might be milking the Christian thing.

    pavilion,

“Can anyone out there see that Obama is working hard playing his Christian role. “

Are you serious? He’s never attempted to play Christians and milk them for their vote like Mike Hackabee has tried. Look at Obama’s voting record, he’s not and has never been attempting to lead Christians into thinking he’s a ‘christian conservative’ that many evangelicals are looking for. Many people are attracted to him b/c he is a president that can likely unite the congress and country.

You know it’s bad when Pat Roberts endorses Giuliani, a guy that is no where near conservative (socially or fiscally).

    ”Father was muslim”

Oh no, heaven forbid! News flash, not all presidents have been Christian. Some of the first were Deists. And just b/c a president is Christian doesn’t mean he’s going to make the best overall decisions, GWB can attest to that. This administration will go down as one of the worst ever.

“on record for suporting his brother Roy who is a militant muslim.”
Oh really? I’d love to hear about this. Can you back this up with sources?

    icunurse,

" I have noticed he does not cover his hand when the Pledge is recited"

Oh, this ol tale again huh?

If you didn't know, that event where he didn't have his hand over his heart was durring the National Athem (like the one they play at ball games) and NOT the PLEDGE of Allegence. If you'd like I'll cite that actual video footage of the event, but I won't rub it in. I'd rather you get the story straight.

One can't exzactly say the pledge of allegence if the actul song in question isn't the pledge of allegence.

    2) Father was muslim
    3) on record for suporting his brother Roy who is a militant muslim.
    4) The pastor of his church promotes Louis Faracan (Muslim groupleader)

We should realize that any man who does not seek the one True GOD, will lead and decieve. I have noticed he does not cover his hand when the Pledge is recited. He will not Pledge to the country he wants to run. We would be foolish to allow him to take the lead. We should fevently pray for the upcoming elections and seek God's will.

Senator Obama would be like a breath of fresh air compared the fool and war monger that is in the WH now. Obama is intelligent, articulate and capable. Complete opposite of the current WH fool.

    GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
