By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

President Bush’s final State of the Union address Monday night featured few surprises for the general public, but drew applauds from some evangelical leaders.

President Bush delivers his State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress, Monday Jan. 28, 2008, on Capitol Hill in Washington as Vice President Dick Cheney and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi listen.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council (FRC) praised Bush for challenging Congress to act on issues important to American families and the nation.

“A high mark came when the President explained how advances in science have made embryonic stem cell research obsolete and then called on Congress to pass a comprehensive cloning ban, ensuring as he put it, ‘that all life is treated with the dignity it deserves,’” Perkins said.

Bush was also applauded by FRC for voicing a “list of pro-family policies” that included creating educational scholarships and protecting faith-based groups and donations.

Another evangelical leader, the Rev. Jim Ball of the Evangelical Environmental Network, welcomed the President’s announcement that the United States will commit $2 billion over the next three years to a new international fund to promote clean energy technologies and fight climate change.

“Let us create a new international clean technology fund, which will help developing nations like India and China make greater use of clean energy sources,” Bush said, according to Reuters.

Furthermore, the President expressed commitment to working with the United Nations and the international community to develop a pact to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

“We are delighted to learn that President Bush has answered this call and is demonstrating leadership with a $2 billion international clean technology fund as announced in his State of the Union address,” Ball exclaimed.

He highlighted that more than 115 senior evangelical leaders are part of the Evangelical Climate Initiative organized by Ball, which has called on the U.S. to help poor countries address climate change.

Other key points of the speech included the $150 billion stimulus plan agreed on last week in hopes of reviving the slumping economy, the success of the troop surge in Iraq; and his efforts in creating a lasting peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians.

Bush highlighted that more than 20,000 U.S. troops will be returned home from Iraq in the coming months, but any further withdraw is based on the situation there and the recommendations of military commanders in Iraq.

FRC’s Perkins called on the Democratic-led Congress to take action on Bush’s pro-family challenges which he said the majority of Americans support.

"Of course I have “all the answers”, that’s because I read my Bible. “What is your suggestion that we do?” Speaking as a Christian first, and American a distant something - have patience, love our enemy, give to the thief who steals your coat your shirt as well. I noticed that it isn’t Iran who is threatening to drop a bomb on us; it is we who are threatening to drop a bomb on them, because we think (based again on a boatload of misinformation) that they want to drop a bomb on us. "

I guess you didn't read the article where the president of Iran said he wanted to "wipe Isreal off the map".... now granted it is isreal it isn't the US but if we do not stand up for an ally is that ally going to stand up for us... Whether you like it or not, this country is hated by most all of the other countries in this twisted world of ours and whether you like it or not we need a president in office that is willing to stand up and fight against those that are twisted... Bush may not be the best president but I think if Gore or the other guy was in office we would be in a lot worse shape then we are now...

Also one other thing, as for the tax cuts for the wealth, "middle class in poverty" and health care for kids comments i just have this to say, I would be considered Middle class as the definision puts it however I don't live in "poverty" i own my home or atleast share it with the bank, I have been paying the same taxes for the last 8 years i haven't seen a serious increase in taxes regardless, so to say that "the wealthy" are getting tax breaks is about rediculus. The rich are going to get out of paying alot of taxes not because of tax breaks which don't exist but by hiding their money better. And as for the Health care plan for the children that bush vetoed, it had more to do with helping illegal immagrant children then it did american children. Now I am all for helping other countries but if we don't help our own children how can we help others...

    >By the time the next President is finishing up their first term, someone will come out with a list of the "900 lies" of their administration.

I agree, especially if it is Hillary Clinton. Bush has set a precedent that she will be happy I’m sure to fit right into.

    >By the way. The reason why there are so many body bags, is because war is bloody, and people are killed. That's what war is...killing people. It's not like your PS3 where you can just hit a button and start over. This is a real war.

Yes, I noticed this, and he started it based on lies and misinformation, which were designed to deceive… that’s why I think he’s a war criminal and a jerk.

Aagh!! [as I kick dirt around and spit] Bush just ticks me off!! He’s a terd!

    didymus,

By the way. The reason why there are so many body bags, is because war is bloody, and people are killed. That's what war is...killing people. It's not like your PS3 where you can just hit a button and start over. This is a real war.
And before I get misinterpreted let me point out some things.
A: I don't think Bush is perfect. And I don't think he's the best president we've had. But he is better than that other person who was running for office. We chose the lesser of two evils.
B: I don't totally agree, either, with why we did what we did in Iraq. I think we (the public) were misled. I believe that Bush wanted to rid the world of Saddam, but couldn't get it done any other way. I believe that Saddam had WMD's. But he is extremely sneaky and underhanded. And when you give him all those chances and time to "comply" with the demands to inspect suspected sites, you also give him plenty of time to hide, dismantle, and destroy any and all traces, hoping that they will find nothing and leave him alone to restart after all the heat has been taken off.
C: I'm not a warmonger. I gon't agree with killing, regardless of the reason (war, capital punishment, abortion). But, in our Godless country, it is the only way to protect ourselves and insure our survival. I believe that God can do all things, including protect us. If we were truly a Christian country, we wouldn't need a military. I know that sounds radical and extreme, but it's true.

Yes, it is inane and immature. And I will say it again. By the time the next President is finishing up their first term, someone will come out with a list of the "900 lies" of their administration.

  • Thu Jan 31, 2008 2:48 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

I try not to get too political. But I will speak my mind, and leave it at that. Just remember, it was the U.S. government that supplied and trained Al Qaida decades ago (including Osama). It was Clinton who was informed of the threat the Bin Laden represented, but was too busy getting sexual favors to really care. He sloughed it off on the next President.
But I agree with you on the position of Iraq. I think we should have waited until we had more proof. Like, oh I don't know, millions of people die from some chemical attack pulled off by Saddam. (Like Clinton did with Bin Laden). And then we can complain about the President's "lack of concern", and that he should have done something to nip it in the bud.
It's the same situation we face with Iraq. We have a leader of a country that made it extremely clear that he wants to completely obliterate Israel and the U.S., who is working on making nuclear warheads. What is your suggestion that we do? Wait until one or more of our major cities lies in ruins, millions killed, with nuclear fallout killing untold numbers of other innocents? I'm just curious, because you come across as a man who has all the answers.

Now I will step down from my political soap box, and get back to what really matters: God.

  • Thu Jan 31, 2008 2:20 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

Well Prophet, if it’s “inane and immature”, why are there so many body bags.

I’ll vote for who I think is best and even if they win and their jerks I’ll bad mouth them just the same (and if the one I don’t vote for wins and stands up good and honorable, I’ll respect them for it).

Vote GLORIA LA RIVA for President '08 :^)

    didymus,

It's like a broken record. It's the same thing I've been hearing about every single President as long as I can remember. People vote a President in, and those who didn't will spend the next four years bad mouthing them.
Trust me, if whoever you vote for in the next election gets elected, you will not be bad mouthing them. But those who vote for the "other" person will be. And vice-versa.
Jesus could become President, and you'd still have people bad mouth Him. Geez, He's not even President and people still talk smack about Him.
Four years from now there will be another list come out: "900 supposed lies of the President "X" administration." On and on. Quite inane and immature, if you really want to know. Reminds me of when I was in Middle School. I remember someone coming up with the list of "Most Popular". Even then, there was squabbles about who #1 should be.
Get a grip. Get a life. And I'll be looking forward to the list next year. No doubt, there will be one. Regardless of who's President.

chris - did not richard nixon started SALT 1 & talked to the chinese? SALT 2 was the prelude to the START treaties. even reagan supported noriega, saddam.
when the plan to free the hostage failed at least carter took responsibility for it he did not blame others like bush does.
eisenhower took the responsibility when a U2 piloted by powers was shot down in the soviet union. he did not blame the cia.
while bush blamed the cia for 911 & iraq war in which 6000 are dead, katrina happened, W blamed brown, 100 died. what kind of a leader is bush when he blames everybody, everyone for the decisions he makes & not take the responsiblities. if you say that it is an intelligence problem regarding 911 & iraq, then if the cia tells bush to jump off a cliff, he will decide to do so? bush & co. are itching to have a war.

hyperion overseer - I am not going to apologise but I am thanking didymus, he is right bush is not the way to salvation. you know that is biblical, christ opposed the pharisees, experts in the law, & they labeled him illigimate. so, if christ oppose this war are you going to label him as liberal, leftist, communist, opposers of bush & he will burn in hell? duh.

“The 900+ supposed lies of the Bush administration” – I honestly hadn’t thought of them when I posted. But when say, “Perhaps you can cut out all the false lies related to the war and you will be left with maybe what 10?” Are you kidding me? Are you serious? 10 lies? That’s it?

Honestly, Bush is a living manifestation of the boy who cried wolf one too many times. It’s hard to trust anything he says anymore.

    gavulav,

    >I just wish that the American people could learn to appreciate the greatness of their leaders and judge their performance with respect, humility and gratitude.

I think it is unwise to uphold our leaders with such respect, especially when they are so undeserving of that respect. President Bush has consistently used lies, misinformation, and propaganda to deceive Americans into supporting his disastrous and counterproductive policies. Deception is not a Christ-like quality.

Christians should be critical of their leaders – especially of political leaders, where power corrupts more easily. If a leader stands up for what is right and good, then a critical examination will show that he is right and good, but if a leader is a jerk, who’s policies have destroyed nations, and killed at the very least 150,000 people, all based on lies, he should not be accorded respect, with humility and gratitude. He should be tried for war crimes.

kaishinden79, Carter was the worst President ever the worst gas shortage ever, gave the Panam, canal to a communist dictator, General Omar Torrijos, with the Carter-Torrijos Treaties
    Carter
Carter sold out Taiwan, which had been our friend and ally for decades, in favor of Communist China.
Carter, with his desire for a one-world-government may have thought he was making the world a safer place with SALT II. He was making it safer - for the communists. Fortunately, the Senate never ratified the treaty.

I sympathise with President Bush because it can't be easy being President of the greatest nation on eatrh, and especially since your every word and action is scrutinised by your countrymen who have seemingly limitless freedom and liberty to say exactly what they think of you. While I agree that President Bush isn't everyone's ideal leader, I think that he is a man of great courage and wisdom, like his predecessors. His decisiveness after 9/11 gives hope to those of us who live in the free world. We know that when the chips are down, the President of the USA will step forward and defend our liberty and freedom with all the resources of his great country.

From where some of us are looking, President Bush and other national leaders before him have done a sterling job of defending our right to live in a free world against all odds. I just wish that the American people could learn to appreciate the greatness of their leaders and judge their performance with respect, humility and gratitude.

President Bush's recent address confirms to me that Americans have great national leaders who stand for what is good and noble, even when their people get a little side-tracked with issues.

  • Wed Jan 30, 2008 9:55 am Agree: 2   Disagree: 1

these evangelicals that applauded this president must either be wealthy who received tax cuts or they are blinded by the teachings from their pastor. there are more issues than pro-life or family values. how can a president preaches pro-life or pro family when declares himself as a 'war president' & lies in front of millions of families, then bombs a country that did not have any connection with 911 that kills women & children; pro life when he vetoes health insurance for children, family values when he abuses the authority he has given - unwarranted wiretapping, torture, greed, & disrespect for the constitution. his STATE OF THE union is nothing new. was recycled 5 times but in reality W has not accomplished nothing as far as the state of this union only tax cut for the wealthy. this last year of the bush presidency will be the same like the previous 5 yrs. I wonder what is the next scandal he will present to the families of this country.

to hyperion overseer - I do not have to say ill or slanderous about this president. the fact already speaks for itself.

George W Bush will go down as one of the worst Presidents in history and righfully so.. He lied us into a war in Iraq, let the oil and insurance fleece the middle class, gave tax cuts to the wealthiest americans who by the way have only made money on the war on terror while the rest of the country had to sacrafice.

More middleclass families in poverty, shipped millions of jobs overseas, and let the millions loose their health insurance.

If all you Bush loving evangelicals really knew what the Old money trust fund republican party bosses thought about the evangelicals, evangelicals would leave the republican party. tomorrow

Hyperion, tone it down a bit, we do not live in a theocracy but a democracy, people can say whatever they want. Also, you assume that everyone on here is a Christian, or that believing in God necessarily means being a Christian. In any case, if you want to defend your position or thoughts about President Bush then you can certainly do it without such harsh words. I too don't agree with Kaishinden, but if you follow the Bible then you will know that we defend our position with firmness and gentleness. Remember that and show some humility.

Didymus, I am supposing you are referring to the 900+ supposed lies of the Bush administration? That was the biggest bunch of overstatements I have ever seen. There is absolutely no proof that Bush was lying, they did believe that there were WMDs in Iraq, and Hussein himself bragged about it. The vast majority of these so called lies were related to the war, and the vast majority are not lies, they were misunderstandings. Even the Democrats agreed back then. Perhaps you can cut out all the false lies related to the war and you will be left with maybe what 10? Give me a break.

at least carter made the israeli egyptian peace treaty possible & helped other people in other countries after his presidency was over. and he did try to release the hostages.

while bush did ABSOLUTELY nothing in his eight years as president. he made MORE suffering like katrina debacle, voted against healthcare for children, created more deficit, disrespected the constitution of the US, wasted $1.8 trillion on a war that is not connected with 911, 911 happened on bush's presidency which resulted in 6000 dead, blamed everybody except himself & his DECISIONs, & made the middle east more unstable. every year of this presidency, THERE IS SCANDAL!!
