Huckabee Proves Staying Power Under Fire

By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter

WASHINGTON – A determined Mike Huckabee defied critical members of the GOP by claiming victory in two states this past weekend despite being heavily pressured to quit the race.

Republican presidential hopeful, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, greets students and supporters at a campaign rally at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md., Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008. Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia hold primary elections next Tuesday.

The seemingly chronic underdog won Kansas by a landslide as well as Louisiana Saturday to the chagrin of some fellow Republicans who argue that his staying in the race is hurting the party.

“It was an important victory, especially after the pundits spent the past few days saying this campaign is over,” said campaign manager Chip Saltsman to ABC News. “Kansas said ‘not so fast.’”

Huckabee won some 60 percent of the votes in Kansas compared to McCain’s 24 percent, capturing all 36 delegates in the state caucuses, according to The Associated Press.

“Am I quitting? Let’s get that settled right now. No, I’m not,” Huckabee said during his speech to the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington over the weekend.

Several prominent Republican leaders have lately urged Huckabee to step aside so that the party can start launching its national campaign around current frontrunner John McCain before the Democratic Party. Huckabee, who has 217 delegates, is too far behind McCain, who has 723 delegates, to win the party’s nomination, the Republican figures argue.

“I know the pundits, and I know what they say: The math doesn’t work out…Well, I didn’t major in math, I majored in miracles,” said Huckabee, a divinity student, to ABC News on Saturday. “And I still believe in those, too,”

A Republican nominee needs 1,191 delegates, and only about 1,000 delegates are left.

Republican strategist Karl Rove, who masterminded President Bush’s landslide re-election win in 2004, is among those who do not believe Huckabee could win the GOP nomination.

“I find it very unlikely, completely implausible that Governor Huckabee could win 83 percent of the delegates by either winning the caucuses and primaries here on out and/or having some of the bound delegates, pledged delegates change their minds,” Rove said on CBS.

But Rove added, “I don’t think anybody should be trying to pressure him (Huckabee) to get out of the race before he’s ready to get out of the race.”

Christian right leader Gary Bauer, who was a Republican presidential candidate in 2000, is another party member who doesn’t believe Huckabee can win the nomination.

He said it is to the advantage of the Republican Party that the Democratic candidates are in a “brutal fight” that could last until the Democratic National Convention in late August, which could make it difficult for Democratic voters to come together.

“The one advantage that conservatives may have is that we could [now] come together earlier than them,” Bauer strategized, according to OneNewsNows. “So I would hope that Mike Huckabee would follow the lead of Mitt Romney at this point.”

Former Republican presidential candidate Romney announced that he was suspending his campaign, or essentially quitting, last Thursday.

Texas Governor Rick Perry, who has endorsed McCain, has also asked Huckabee to exit the race.

But Huckabee's response to all the Republican leaders asking him to quit was:

“The Democrats haven’t settled their nominee either, so for us to suddenly act like we have to all step aside and have a coronation instead of an election, that’s the antithesis of everything Republicans are supposed to believe,” Huckabee argued on NBC. “We believe competition breeds excellence and the lack of it breeds mediocrity.”

“So this nonsense about how I should step aside and have a cakewalk all the way to the election, that’s crazy. Unless they were all to step aside and let me have a cakewalk, then that would be a fine thing,” Huckabee said, according to CBS

Yet in the midst of pressure to leave the race, a hard-to-get Christian right leader gave Huckabee a surprising endorsement last week. Influential pro-family leader Dr. James Dobson endorsed Huckabee following Romney’s announcement of his suspended campaign. Dobson, who has made it clear that he cannot and will not vote for McCain, explained that Huckabee is the only conservative left in the race.

Similarly, many conservatives have also expressed hesitation at supporting McCain, who is seen as a moderate or liberal by the GOP’s right wing.

Only one-fifth (19.7 percent) of conservatives at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this weekend said they believe McCain was a true conservative, according to a poll of 1,000 random CPAC participants. Another 20.8 percent said they are still undecided about the Arizona senator.

CPAC is the nation’s largest annual gathering of conservatives.

“From these results, it is clear that Senator McCain has a challenge in gaining the conservative support he needs in order to win the general election,” said David Franke of ConservativeHQ.com, which conducted the poll.

“Even if you add in the people who will limit their activity to voting for him, and all of the undecided conservatives (not likely), he will have only 83.5 percent of the conservative vote,” Franke commented.

Historically, the Republican presidential candidate needs more than 80 percent of the conservative vote in order to win.

“The poll results show he can possibly reach that level of conservative support, but it will be dauntingly hard,” Franke noted.

Frontrunner McCain on Friday also acknowledged that Huckabee remains a threat to this presidential bid, calling him a “viable candidate” that continues to “show strength,” according to CNN.

“Obviously we are pleased with the events that have happened, but we still have a ways to go and we’ll continue campaigning,” McCain said.

During an interview Saturday, Huckabee defended his decision to continue his campaign by saying Americans don’t want to be told who their president will be.

“And, in the Republican Party, people want to make a choice. They don’t want somebody else making that decision for them,” he said to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

“There’s something going on out there, it’s called an election,” Huckabee reminded.

The Republican and Democratic “Potomac Primaries” in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia will take place Tuesday.

Your joking, right? America doesn't want a religious wing nut as pres. Americans have had enough of presidents [bush] claiming to hear the voice of God telling them to start wars.

Yeah, its really too bad he's not another dumbya bush that has got the US booged down in two wars it cannot extracate itself from.. bush may very well be the first US president to lose two wars.....as he drains the US treasury and destroys the US military.....anyone and I mean anyone would be an improvement over bush. It interesting to me that the bible pushers support bush who is responsible for the death and destruction of the country of Iraq.......To me Christians that support Bush undermine the very faith they claim to up hold.. Thats what happens when politics and religion mix.

AR was no. 37 on the list of over all tax burdened states before Huckabee was elected.
Mike brought it down to number 44.

It is true that he raised taxes, but it was only after a court ordered mandate.

He did actually cut taxes 94 times and still ended up with millions of dollars in surplus, when it was in the million dollar bust.

The fair tax could revolutionize America and bring the economy completely out of its slump. It would be better for businesses and create job growth. It would help families. It would alleviate financial stress and tear down the deficit.

Best of all Mike speaks the language of the common man. He has not been raised as a Washington insider or political cut-throat.

What did Obama do? I live in Illinois, and I’m still trying to find out.

Citsonga: “Barrack Obama WILL BE the next president. Americans are tired of the war mongering bush…”

Barrack Obama has no substance. It is sad that he is the best candidate that Democrats have to offer. Some have haled him as the Reagan-Democrat. He is awfully good at reading cue-cards I will admit, but he has no substance. He makes a better rhetoritician than politician. He wants to leave Iraq to self-destruct just when it is beginning to stand up on its own feet to turn around and redeploy to invade Pakistan. Obama is dangerous and is incapable of commanding the office that he seeks to fill. He has no experience at all. Believe me, I live in Illinois; he has done nothing of significant value here. He refuses to wear the American flag on his lapel just to show how multicultural he really is. He is not a loyal American, he is a loyal liberal.

In addition, Obama has yet to identify anything other than "change" as his platform. I don't believe I need rehash Mrs. Clinton's shortcomings, and McCain sort of seems a little out of it witohut a script. When Barack Obama addresses his connection to the corrupt developeer who sold the Senator his home below value, among other properties, adn addresses how he is a canddate for change when he sued his opponents out of running in chicago (alderman race), then I may consider him as an honest man. Someone rips on Huckabee for accepting token gifts, but overlooks Obama's ties to a chicago slumllord? aQuestion's Huckabee's religous beliefs, but overlooks Obama's Pastor's racist remarks? That would be called hypocrisy, methinks.

I just finished several hours reviewing debate archives and counterviewpoint videos. Every anti-Huckabee ad focuses on his religion, and misquote or blatantly lie about him. I saw the whole discussion of his speech on abortion- He did not say he "was going to re-write the constiution" or any other such drivel. He never said he was anti- evolution, nor did he ever make the claim of young earth. Bill Maher said those words, and everyone against Huckabee attributed them to the Governor. So, my point is this- Gov. Huckabee has been honest, has been forthright, and has not used mud slinging in his campaign. I do believe that the only objection anyone has with him s he is a Christian, and a Pastor. Want to know why he appears so polished? He's telling you the truth! I wish I had the forebearance Gov. Huckabee had when Ron Paul supporters came into one of Huck's campaign offices with a banner reading "Who would Jesus Bomb" and mockingly sang some hymn-like song. The only people who discredit him do so with lies and half truths.

Exactly what does Obama plan to differently in Iraq than what Bush has proposed? He is not going to pull the troops out if he is elected. I read on his website he has a 16 month time table and the few particulars he does mention gives him a lot of wiggle room to leave the troops in Iraq longer if the need arises.

Americans are tired of the war mongering bush, they dont want another war monger- mccain, and they dont want another clinton in the WH and Huck hasn't a chance-way too much religion talk. That leaves Sen Obama as the last one standing..........there may be hope for America yet.

Okay, I did notice you failed to note the 14 ethics violations, and further failed to elaborate the charges of non-profit for profit allegation. Contrary to popular belief, non-profit doesn't mean unpaid labor. Churches are non-profit, but pastor's still receive a salary. So he sued the board? Did he win? What basis do the charges have? If they are atypical political attacks, then what obligation does anyone have to cooperate? Don't buy into the practice of dropping unsubstantiated bombs, then not expounding them further. The allegations I've heard against the governor have all been pretty much conjecture and sensationalist in nature. Aside from that, every time he's been asked to give an account of his actions, he has not once shied from it. Even the Rolling Stone had to resort to petty name calling in their article about Gov. Huckabee. So, to get to the point, what credibility do these accusations have?
Or did you just declare guilt because the AP told you to?
Oh, and while we're on the subject of ethic's violations, perhaps we can revisit whitewater, where the only living witnesses are the ones who refuse to testify? Or perhaps we can talk about Obama suing his competition out of running? Yeah, if you are going to attack Huckabee because of allegation, why do you not also atack the other candidates actual deeds? Could it be because you have an agenda?

  • Mon Feb 11, 2008 3:15 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 0

What governor has not been accused of ethics violation? That is the favorite game of the political opposition. It is always politically motivated.

And Huck is not allowed legal remedies or due process in challenging an ethics statute that is arbitrary and vague? Why does he have to roll over and not fight it? He was fined $250 in 2001 over the incident of the two gifts. One was a $500 canoe from a local Coca Coal bottler and the other a stadium blanket. Wow! What a scandal. $500 is not even a nice canoe. If I was going to bribe someone, I would offer them more than a cheap $500.00 canoe and stadium blanket.

Is this it? For a someone who was a governor for over 10 years I would expect a much longer list of allegations from his political enemies. But, a canoe and stadium blanket? Canoegate? In 10 years as a governor, you piss off a lot of people who you did not support and are looking to get even. Especially when you are a Republican in Clinton country. I am surprised this is the best they can come up with.

Huckabee an "honest Christian leader?" Oh boy, I really wish he had a shot at the nomination, he would be so easy to beat.

Governor Huckabee enjoyed a meteoric rise in the polls in December 2007, which prompted a more thorough review of his ethics record. According to The Associated Press: “[Huckabee’s] career has also been colored by 14 ethics complaints and a volley of questions about his integrity, ranging from his management of campaign cash to his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income to his destruction of state computer files on his way out of the governor’s office.” And what was Governor Huckabee’s response to these ethics allegations? Rather than cooperating with investigators, Huckabee sued the state ethics commission twice and attempted to shut the ethics process down.

Funny, isn't it, how someone would run down Huckabee because he "only" has a B.A.? According to Chicago24, this degree is an easy accomplishment- you wouldn't happen to belong to Obama's church there, would ya? The one making racist remarks? Second point- Huckabee seems to have all the required characteristics of an honest Christian leader. He doesn't bring a whole lot of ill will to the Name of THE LORD. He hasn't run a negative campaign, unlike every other candidate, and he hasn't shied from his convictions. So, everyone keeps talking about how they despise dishonest politicians, yet when there is an honest man running, they shy away from him because...why? He's a pastor. Yes, this confuses me, and dampens my mood.

Chicago24 - That took a lot to compare Huck's education with the Mdiv degrees that the mainline seminaries are passing out of late. Their enrollment levels and ]financial support from denominational bodies have been in a free fall. As long the check clears, my dog could get a Mdiv from a mainline seminary.

Huckabee came from humble beginnings, just like me; and that's why I like this man; and he's a strong family man, and leader!
Who cares what school of divinity he went to or didn't go to. GOD raises up men and women for HIS purposes; and HE can raise a beggar from the streets to sit in a Palace if HE should so choose. Did HE not make David, (a shepherd boy) the King of Israel!

We need a leader who believes in someone higher than himself and that is accountable to God!

Boy, I just don't understand what's up with the Republicans this year. Two of the three "candidates" still in the race have absolutely no mathematical chance of winning, but still they persist. Huck has plenty of credentials to influence the platform, IF he gets the heck out of the way now. The longer he keeps going, the more he will PO the party bigwigs, who, although they are not big McCain fans, still want to win in November.

Nobody cares what Ron Paul does, of course.

Oh, and one more thing, chicago24.....I guess since you wouldn't support a pastor with such little education, then you wouldn't have supported Jesus, either..... my pastor only has an eighth grade education, and he has more biblical insight than 95% of highly educated ministers I have listened to....

For someone who isn't "educated" enough for you, chicago24, he has risen to the office of Governor.....so obviously the majority of his state felt he was educated enough! (And before anyone starts, please refrain from disparaging remarks about Southerners or Arkansas! I'm a Pennsylvanian living in Tennessee, and believe me, we Northerners don't have the market cornered on education!). Besides, we've all seen highly educated Presidents make complete fools of themselves, so education in itself isn't a guarantee against anything. How about a moral compass? Now, there's a quality I'd like to see in a President! Run, Mike, run!!!!!!

The only education Huckabee obtained is a B.A. in Religious Studies which is just about the easiest degree one can obtain. He barely completed anything toward a Master of Divinity which is what most mainline denomonations require to become a minister or priest (90 graduate hours). He's not even qualified to be in a pulpit, much less public office. I could never support a candidate (or pastor) who hasn't made the sacrifice to obtain the proper educational requirements.
