TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Sunday that God would punish Iranians if they do not support the country's disputed nuclear program, state radio reported.
"The Iranian people openly announce that they will defend their rights... God will reprimand them if they do not do so," state radio quoted Khamenei as saying.
The 68-year-old ayatollah, who has final say on all state matters, said Washington's claim that Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon is false. The Iranian government has long insisted its nuclear activities are only for peaceful generation of fuel.
"They know that Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapon, and they are just trying to block the Iranian nation from achieving advanced technology," Khamenei was quoted as saying in Tehran.
The U.S. has led the push for a third round of U.N. sanctions against Iran for refusing to halt uranium enrichment, a technology that can be used to produce nuclear fuel or material for an atomic bomb.
Last month, the five permanent Security Council members — the U.S., Russia, China, Britain and France — agreed on a draft resolution for new sanctions.
Iran insisted it would continue enriching uranium because it needed to provide fuel to a 300-megawatt light-water reactor it was building in the southwestern town of Darkhovin.
Iranian officials have said they plan to generate 20,000 megawatts of electricity through nuclear energy in the next two decades.

Added perspective if I may, Muslim in general still sees America and Britain as Christian Nations. They still teach students at their madrassah about Christian Crusader invading the Muslim land and start rounding up people and executing them all, men women and children -a long time ago. Muslim leaders have never formally accept any apology from any Christian leaders about the Crusaders islam-cleansing. This perspective are discussed when Ahmadinejad talk to his friend Din Syamsuddin here in Indonesia quite a while back.
Observe it from their perspective: Currently Iranian looks around them and do you know what they see. Christian Crusader across their border to the west in Iraq, and Christian Crusader to their east in Afghanistan. Carrier Battle groups in the Persian Gulf, Hormuz Strait and the Med. US Fighter jets based at Turkey and the Saudi ready to be unleashed at them. They felt cornered, true enough, and think that it is a matter of time before the Crusader razed Tehran + Isfahan and bomb it like Baghdad or Kandahar.
So what do cornered Terrorist do, they prepare all their explosives cache and if they are going out like the Saddam regime or the Taleban then they would like to take as much casualties as possible, especially launching nuclear cruise missile to Tel Aviv, Netanya and Haifa (not Jerusalem) and wait for the certain Israeli retaliation so then all 1.2 billion Muslim support Iranian position.

I didn't always know Jesus either, and I didn't believe; but the worse this world got I had to ask myself some serious and sober questions; and I did so much research and I know in my heart and mind that Jesus Christ is real; He made Himself known to this wretched sinner and by HIS grace I am saved; and today I know if I were to die; I would be with HIM in paradise, just like the thief on the Cross!
God is real and we can know Him through Jesus Christ! I am truly thankful for finding the truth!

I agree with you JC, yes it is the way of Islam and every false religion that sets itself up against the knowledge of Almighty God.
So much of this is prophetic and it keeps me in prayer before our Lord God. In the last twenty years I have grown more to have a Biblical Worldview and I am thankful for that understanding from God; it makes me not fear what man can do because I know Jesus Christ is in control!

What does man think is going to happen in the next 20 years even? Without the Hope of Jesus Christ there is no hope at all. Man will destroy everything off the face of the planet; but praise God that HE has the plan and that man is not in control as he thinks.
I pray for all nations to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ; for He is the way, the truth and the life!

Beloved, I implore you to look again. Jesus and Allah are complete opposites to each other. One loves, the other hates. One has mercy, the other anger. One has grace, the other has works. One denies the Son, the other says the Son and the Father are one.
One who follows Jesus has eternal life. The other, does not.
By your comments, dear one, you are appearing to be what some call "an athiest". Although, I choose to call these deceived. To you, they may appear to be the same god indeed, but that is because you don't know the real thing. If you did, you would not be making these comments.
Dear one, I implore you to look again. Too much is at stake here. Our very existences are defined by what choices we make in this matter. Do we choose to follow the creator, or do we choose to follow the creation.
Even on a cloudy night, the stars are still there. You can't see them, but you know they are there. This is the way Christianity works. We don't base our knowledge of Him on what the Bible, or anybody else tells us. We base it on the two-way relationship we have with Him. And, just as we know the stars are there, we know He is there too.
Beloved, God is very real. Please, dear one, don't turn your back on Him. He doesn't hate you, He isn't angry with you. He just wants you to turn to Him so that He can show you His revelations. Come as you are, no special preparations are needed.

Actually I agree with JC about the "Allah" comment. It is NOT the same difference. By using "God", instead of "Allah", they are removing an overt reference specifically to Islam. By using "God" instead, it sounds like they are religious fanatics. If they say "Allah", it sounds like they are Islamic extremists. So, in a way, it looks like the press are being cowardly and playing down the clearly Islamic core of these statements.

I don't see any god holding anything back here. Just men in countries going about their way to obtain nukes. Israel would be the pime target and 1st place such weapons would be used, and so naturally the jews aren't going to let that happen.
I doubt seriously if this man used the word "God", but rather "Allah" instead. The press has just lost it's backbone in reporting such matters.
So, it probably said something like this:

Therefore, from a Christian perspective, this is really saying:
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameni said, "Satan has deemed that if you do not back his plans for total destruction of God's people, then you yourselves will be destroyed."
Isn't this the way of Islam?
If we've seen anything from some of these like regimes, it is complete unrestraint. If they were to get a nuclear bomb, these same regimes are very likely to use it. It will not be a weapon of deterrence, but a weapon of jihad.
How much longer will God hold this back? It is not a matter of "if", but "when".
