TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's public school science standards for the first time will use the word "evolution," although the biological concept already was being taught under code words such as "change over time."

The new standards, part of a set of overall science changes adopted by the State Board of Education Tuesday on a 4-3 vote, require schools to spend more class time on evolution and teach it in more detail.

The standards state that evolution is "the fundamental concept underlying all of biology and is supported by multiple forms of scientific evidence." That statement rankled opponents, some of whom had urged the board to add an academic freedom provision that would have allowed teachers to "engage students in a critical analysis of that evidence."

Evolution supporters, including mainstream scientists and clergy, told the board the academic freedom proposal was a wedge designed to open the door for injecting religious arguments into science studies.

"We know what's going on here," said board member Roberto "Bobby" Martinez, a Miami lawyer. "What we have here is an effort by people to water down our standards."

Opponents of evolution denied they had a religious motive, arguing that there are flaws in the scientific theory of evolution and that students should be allowed to explore them.

As a compromise, the standards refer to evolution as a scientific theory, explaining that a theory is a well-supported and accepted explanation of nature, not simply a claim.

The vote was the latest in a long line of public debates over evolution dating back to the Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925, when a teacher was convicted of violating Tennessee's evolution ban. That verdict was reversed on technicality, but courts later ruled evolution could be taught.

Courts subsequently barred teaching the biblical account of creation along with evolution. Most recently, a federal judge in Pennsylvania ruled that intelligent design, which holds the universe's order and complexity is so great science alone cannot explain it, also was a religious theory and could not be taught in public schools.

John Sullivan, executive director of the Florida Baptist Convention, objected to calling evolution the only fundamental concept underlying biology. He wrote in an e-mail to Education Commissioner Eric Smith that Baptists firmly believe there's evidence of a "Creator-initiated origin of life" but did not object to teaching evolution. He argued, though, its scientific weaknesses should be taught as well as its strengths.

There are so many strong and clear evidences of the perfect and unique truth of Christianity and a perfect creator, that those who remain skeptical were said by the Apostle Peter to be "willingly ignorant" (II Peter 3:5), and by the Apostle Paul to be "without excuse" (Romans 1:20). The great king David concluded that only "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God" (Psalm 53:1), and wise king Solomon asserted that, "The fear of the Lord" is the very "beginning of knowledge" and "wisdom" (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10).

God is only as mighty as we let him be and we expect him to be - as much as this earth and our lifes are concerned.
If we don´t expect him to be allmighty and able to change us and things, he wont act.

I have no problems with science and the bible. Word for Word God made this earth and men.
No room for Microevolution and big bang stories, in my world and my picture of God.

Up to now there is no proof, just hints and enough antiproof for evolution and I´m not alone with this belief, just a minority.

My God is allmighty and absolutely able to create things we don´t understand and the devil is absolutely able to mess all of Gods Creation as much as we let him.

Not the US is in trouble, the whole world is. Look at health, food, money, war, environment, behaviour - look where ever you want and check what the bible says about the times we live in. WE left God be a nice man of fiction and undereducated subjects, but this will not let him disappear.
He will come and show who he is and what he is able to do. People open your eyes.
Mens wisdom is mens foolishness. What´s right today is wrong tomorrow, the only constancy can be found in the bible over hundrets of years revealed and messed up be clever people.

smithson.veritas, I agreed with what you said up until you posited this unfavorable remark: “Creationism is the act of insulting God by rejecting the use of the gift of Intellect which He gave us.” While it may be that God has chosen to be a non-conformist often to the detriment of religious pride, including the possibility of utilizing some form of evolution in creation, it does not follow that creationism is ruled out scientifically. Nor has Neo-Darwinism explained the problems postulated by the I.D. school. Nevertheless, thanks for stretching our thinking.

The rejection of science and scientific method is part of why America has been falling behind other countries. There is no contradiction in both believing in God and believing that Evolution is a real phenomena. Some people would like to literally interpret the bible and ignore scientific evidence. Perhaps they should also teach that the world is flat and that the earth is the center of the solar system. God created four forces: Magentisim, gravity, weak force and strong force. Science is the study of God's creation. Creationsim is the act of iunsulting God by rejecting the use of the gift of Intellect which He gave us.

Being a reasonable atheist, let me propose something to you all. My former pastor (Lutheran preacher) once said that a blink of an eye to God is a thousand years to us. Keeping that in mind, how many blinks of an eye (as a measurement of time) are there in six or seven days? Hundreds of thousands.

stars: "For those who do want to find out how things came to be the way they are: Why do you want to know unless you are trying to find out why you are here? What are you really looking for?"

I want to know because I find the fields of cosmology and quantum mechanics interesting and exciting. Theologians and philosophers have been debating about the nature of the universe for centuries with little to show for it. Science has gotten us very far in answering questions about the nature of the universe and will in time show us how the universe came to be.

The theory of evolution doesn't address the creation of life, those who, regardless their faith who continue to suggest is does so, are willing to lie to bolster their unprovable beliefs. They refer to the same book that was referred to in prosecuting those who dare suggest the Earth is not flat or the Earth circles the Sun, not the Sun circles the Earth.
