Three Tools Saddleback Uses to Help People Grow

By Rick Warren|Christian Post Guest Columnist

All living things grow. Growth is evidence of life. If a child doesn’t grow up, that’s a tragedy. If a believer never grows to spiritual maturity, that’s a tragedy.

God wants your congregation to grow as well, not just numerically but spiritually. And for the people of your church to grow, you’ve got to be intentional.

As a pastor, I think about the spiritual maturity of my congregation all of the time. I grew up in church as a pastor’s son. I knew people who had been in church all of their lives and were still spiritually immature. They were self-righteous, critical, unloving, and jealous. They had been taught the Bible all of their lives, and it hadn’t changed their lives.

It bothers me to see that in my church today. I am accountable to God for leading the spiritual growth of my church. I don’t take that responsibility lightly. Peter tells pastors, “Just as shepherds watch over their sheep, you must watch over everyone God has placed in your care. Do it willingly in order to please God, and not simply because you think you must. Let it be something you want to do, instead of something you do merely to make money” (1 Peter 5:2 CEV). The spiritual growth of your congregation should matter greatly to you.

Many people think that the Purpose Driven paradigm is all about church growth. But really it’s about personal growth. It’s a paradigm we designed to help people grow spiritually. It’s not about building attendance; it’s about building an army of people serving God. It’s not just about building hearers of the Word; it’s about building doers of the Word.

If you want to build doers of the Word in your church, you’ve got to be intentional about growing people spiritually. Your people will grow spiritually when they make commitments to spiritual maturity.

Saddleback Church is built on people who have made deeper and deeper commitments to Jesus Christ. We encourage people to make these commitments in three ways.

First, we encourage people to move through six levels of spiritual commitment.

We put everybody in our community in one of these levels of spiritual commitment. The first level actually takes no commitment at all. Called the Community, it’s everyone within driving distance of our church.

We expect nothing from the people in this group – although we hope they will come to our weekend worship services. That’s the first step of commitment a person makes at Saddleback. When they do that, they move into the Crowd.

Once someone starts attending Saddleback, we encourage them to come to our membership class, C.L.A.S.S. 101. That’s where they learn what it means to be a member and get a chance to make a commitment to church membership by signing a covenant. When they do that, they become part of the Congregation, a part of our church family.

To be honest, we don’t care if a person joins our church or another church. We just want people to make a commitment to a local church.

Then, once they join the church, we encourage them to take C.L.A.S.S. 201, where they learn about how to grow as a Christian. We focus on the great habits of the Christian life – prayer, quiet time, giving, and attending a small group. Then, just like we did in C.L.A.S.S. 101, we ask people to sign a covenant committing to practice these disciplines. Once they make that decision, they move into the circle we call the Committed.

Once they’ve made a commitment to grow spiritually, we ask them to take C.L.A.S.S. 301 and learn more about how God has shaped them for ministry. They learn a lot about themselves during this class. They also get a chance to meet with a guide who helps them find ministries that fit their unique spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences (S.H.A.P.E.). Continue >>

My Pastor has often told us that when a pastor say's my church, he would walk away with the understanding that it has become reiligious and not Christian. Jesus told the religionists that there house was left unto them desolate, and walked away from the "institutional church". Jesus' real church is the body of Christ that lives as an organism bringing honor and glory to Christ, not an institution or organization.

Well, It is opined that how to attract the youth of today to come to church is more important. The youth needs our attention and care.

Help the congregation to grow spiritually is the basic responsibility of the church , it needs no mention again and again. Furthermore , the strategies of one church may not apply to the churches in the other regions.

"I am accountable to God for leading the spiritual growth of my church."

You are accountable to God alright, but not for leading the spiritual growth of the Church, the Church does not belong to you, the Church belongs to the LORD Jesus Christ. Pastors are to faithfully proclaim the unadulterated biblical gospel without manipulation and God will cause the growth. Spiritually and numerically. You may indeed be leading the spiritual growth of YOUR church but your church is not the church of the LORD Jesus Christ. There may be more than a few Christians that attend Saddleback and wherever, but I think you will find that there are a lot less than you imagine or visualize. You are not leading the spiritual growth of the Church of the LORD Jesus Christ, He does that Himself, through His word, worldwide. Even if God's word comes forth from corrupt, boastful, proud, arrogant, sinful vessels God is the one that brings the increase. God uses His word even when portions of His word are tortured by the proclaimer. You cannot take any credit whatsoever for the spiritual growth of the Church Jesus Christ is building. God alone gets all the glory for that and you get none. There are millions of Christians alive today who will never ever embrace the deceptive Purpose Driven paradigm and I say; "Praise God for that." To my dying breath I renounce everything Purpose Driven. I want absolutely nothing to do with it. I pray God opens peoples eyes and they flee the binding blinding influence of the Purpose Driven movement.

    2 Timothy 4:3
    For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
2 Timothy 4:2-4 (in Context) 2 Timothy 4 (Whole Chapter)

Brian Mclaren, Tony Campolo, Richard Foster, Rick Warren, Rob Bell, Dan Kimball, Tony Jones, Robert Schuller and many others are part of this emergent church of deceit. Be warned brethren, for we are living in the end times and we are today so much closer to them than when the Apostles lived. The Bibelwarns us that there will come a time when me will gather up for themselves teachers to tell them what their itching ears want to hear. I believe we are in those times wholeheartedly. I can only hope that by the power of the Holy Spirit these men who are being led into heresy and false doctrines of demons will repent and start teaching the Whole Counsel of God. May they preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and may they continue in the Apostles Doctrine as stated in the Book of Acts. I only fear that they have led many astray in their walks with the Lord. Lord Jesus help us, and forgive us our ignorance; I pray that we be counted worthy to escape the things which are to come; I pray that we follow you and only you; not this manmade pseudo christian postmodernism in the church. Please be patient with those who have not yet understodd the truth of the Gospel, and woo them to yo so that they may know Truth and Life as your Word promises all those who are in the Vine of Christ Jesus. We anxiously await for the Lord Jesus to come for His Bride the Church - Come Lord Jesus Come for your church; Maranatha!!!!!!!!!! Amen!!!!!!!!!!

What level of spiritual development do you reach to attend conferences before non-believers and assure them that God "smiles at them" when they find their purpose, NEVER sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Warren has done that all over the world, including Jewish Synagogues where he is invited to talk about "purpose". He left these people without one word about Jesus Christ. Warren has a false gospel and has falsely assured millions that they are OK with God as long as they find their "purpose". Warren just preached at the apostate National Cathedral where they recently featured Buddhist worship for Tibetan monks. In his message he never once presented the true Gospel. What did he talk about? Finding your purpose, using what's "in your hand" for God. What if you don't know God, Rick? Such a person would have never heard the truth from you! This man is overexposed and he needs to just go away. That's where the hostility comes from on this board. We're tired of it.

"I am accountable to God for leading the spiritual growth of my church."

Sir, you will be accountable to God for twisting His holy Word. Does that not bother you at all?

"They also get a chance to meet with a guide who helps them find ministries that fit their unique spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences (S.H.A.P.E.)."

"They also get a chance to meet with a guide..." A guide? What kind of guide? A "spirit" guide to help them find their S.H.A.P.E.?

    Rick Warren Teaches Self Love

"Listed below are Pastor Warren's salient points from his article entitled "Learn to Love Yourself ". (These are Rick Warren's actual words from the article)

    Accept Yourself

God accepts us unconditionally, and in his view we are all precious and priceless. Focus on this and you will not waste any time and effort trying to be someone you’re not.

    Love Yourself

[Warren’s wife affirms], “God really does love me without strings attached.” [On this basis we apparently have been given the freedom to love ourselves]

    Be True To Yourself

Discover, accept and enjoy our unique "shape" [which refers to Warren’s S.H.A.P.E. program] ….Be content with them [our weaknesses].

    Forgive Yourself

God doesn’t expect perfection but He does insist on honesty. When I honestly admit my errors and ask forgiveness in faith, He doesn’t hold a grudge, doesn’t get even, and doesn’t bring it up again. We should practice such a forgiving attitude with ourselves.

    Believe in Yourself

Start affirming the truth about yourself! The truth is God has created you with talents, abilities, personality and background in a combination that is uniquely you. It’s your choice. You can believe what others say about you, or you can believe in yourself as God does, who says you are truly acceptable, lovable, valuable and capable.

Doesn't the first sentence of the Purpose Driven Life say, "It's not about you"?"

Has Mr. Warren repented of that false teaching and renounced it all now?

Mr. Warren can keep his six levels of spiritual commitment and his promotion of the CEV bible to himself.

  • Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:15 am Agree: 8   Disagree: 1

Does the journey thorough the six levels of spiritual commitment involve the invocation of the Four Spiritual Laws? Do they have a manual on how to properly observe Quiet Time? Is failure to read the Message Notes or fill out a Commitment Card a major sin? Note that none of this prattle is biblical. What ever happened to Christ, and Him Crucified? May God help the Saddleback Church.
