The same ministry that created the Jesus Film – the most translated film in history – has begun distributing in the United States a new film about Jesus that is told through the eyes of Mary Magdalena, the Jesus Film Project announced this week.

Magdalena: Released from Shame is the story of Mary of Magdala, also known as Mary Magdalene, and what she may have experienced walking with Jesus of Nazareth during his public ministry. Through her eyes, this film portrays how Jesus values women by focusing on historical accounts of his interactions with them.

"The Magdalena film is a wonderful way to share with women everywhere that they are loved and valued by God," said Jim Green, executive director of The Jesus Film Project.

The film has been shown in different parts of the world where women face discrimination because of their gender, but only recently was it released in the United States where, overall, there is gender equality.

"Magdalena has already been shown in other parts of the world where women encounter violence and humiliation simply because of their gender,” Green explained. “After test screenings in the United States we discovered that the Magdalena film can also be a very effective way to reach women here who may have never before considered the relevance of having Jesus in their lives."

The Magdalena film follows in the footsteps of the highly successful original Jesus film, which debuted in U.S. theaters in 1979. In collaboration with more than 1,500 Christian agencies, the Jesus film reports more than 6 billion viewings worldwide since 1979. As a result, more than 200 million people have indicated decisions to accept Christ as their personal Savior and Lord.

Last year, the Jesus film celebrated a major milestone – the 1,000th translation of the evangelistic film. The project plans to continue translating the film into 500 new languages which includes every language with more than 100,000 speakers.

The Jesus Film Project is a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ, International, one of the world’s largest nonprofit, interdenominational organizations, founded by Bill and Vonette Bright in 1951.

THE JESUS FILM got it's dialog, plot, and action directly from the Gospel of Luke, didn't it? I wonder what the source was for MAGDALENA.

If this film continues the false story that St. Mary Magdalene was a prostitute it is a disgrace. There are many sources that have shown that to be an error. As the Topekan commentator above said, the negative story about St. Mary Magdalene was firmly implanted by Pope Gregory in the end of the 6th century. Even the Roman Catholic Church has changed the gospel story that is read on her feast (July 22) to John 20:1-18. This is the beautiful scene in which St. Mary Magdalene searches for Jesus at the tomb, sees the angels and the gardener that Peter and the other apostle did not see, recognizes Jesus in the gardener as soon as he says her name, and is then commanded by Jesus to 'Go and tell the others that I have risen.' In John's gospel she is the first witness to the Resurrection and the first to preach the Resurrection. For all who want to preserve the patriarchical systems of old, this is a dangerous story. For those who wish to fully embrace Jesus' message of full equality, this is a most blessed story.

This movie follows the Roman Catholic error which states that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. The confusion came from Pope Gregory, who twisted scripture in order to diminish Mary Magdalene's role as a follower of Jesus (it interferes with their manufactured version of Mary, mother of Jesus as virgin fertility goddess). A woman, presumed to be a prostitute in the end of chapter 7 of Luke is interpolated to be Mary Magdalene, who is introduced in the beginning of chapter 8 of Luke. Mary Magdalene's sins are not specified, merely that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her. Dr. Luke is too accurate an historian to have failed to clearly identify the woman in chapter 7 as Mary Magdelene. It's unfortunate that this movie is continuing to perpetuate this fiction.
