Evangelical Leader Calls for 'Ceasefire' on Sharia Controversy

By Jennifer Gold|Christian Post Correspondent

The General Director of the Evangelical Alliance, the Rev. Joel Edwards, has urged a “ceasefire” in the recent row between people of faith and secularists over the place of religious belief under the rule of law.

The recent assertion by the Archbishop of Canterbury that the accommodation of Sharia law in the British legal system was "unavoidable" lifted the lid on deep divisions over the extent to which secular British law should take religious belief into consideration.

Edwards was speaking at a debate on “Religion, belief and the rule of law” with the leader of the Conservatives, David Cameron, when he argued that a secular experiment to privatize faith had failed.

The evangelical leader, who is also a commissioner for the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), also called for both sides to demonstrate humility.

“We need a cease-fire between faith and non-faith, between religion and non-religion, and an attitude of mutual humility and mutual respect,” he said.

“For religion, the problem is not the secular humanists’ quest for a better and more humane society. It’s the idea of doing it in the absence of God,” he added. "We need to stop and think how our shared aspirations for a better world can be expressed in mutual respect which becomes a joint project in crafting a rule of law for post-Christendom Britain.”

Cameron, meanwhile, argued that if aspects of Sharia law were to be incorporated into the British legal system, this would lead to a legal and cultural apartheid.

In response, Edwards questioned the extent to which public discourse could work if conscience is left out of the picture.

“Conscience and conviction should not have special pleading, but it should have equal status in democratic discourse,” he said. “Exemptions in law based on conscience and conviction should not be dismissed simply on the basis of being influenced by faith.”

The debate was organized by the EHRC and the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (RSA) to further consider some of the issues raised by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, in a lecture earlier this month. Williams' comments on Sharia law drew wide criticism but were also seen as having opened an important debate on accommodating the right of religious groups in an increasingly diverse society.

The discussion panel included Trevor Phillips, chair of the EHRC, and Commissioners Ziauddin Sardar, an expert on Islam and contemporary cultural issues, Francesca Klug, a member of both the Government's Commission for Equality and Human Rights Task Force and Steering Group, and Joel Edwards.

The "Reverend" Joel Edwards wants a "ceasfire?" He wants us all to keep silent, that's what it's all about, and who is to say that he is not working together with the Islamics himself to urge such a thing. Humility? And keeping Conscience out of the public discourse? Get a clue, Edwards!!!

REPENT, FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND!!!

And they want to bring that here to America folks, they have a plan to bring islamic faith to the world, even by force if necessary!

What will you do then Pete when you no longer have "Freedom of Speech" and you all think this is some kind of joke, but it is not! These folks think they're doing "Allah" a favor in killing those who do not practice their faith.

Jesus Christ, is not a religion, HE is God, and HE died for the sin of this world and in HIM their is life and only in Him! HIS law is love, love your neighbor as yourself!

    Come LORD JESUS come!

AMEN!!! Harald!!!! "Prepare ye the way of the LORD!!"

Behold He is coming! The more I see prophecy being fulfilled in my own lifetime - I praise the LORD! I was not always a believer, but I praise and thank Jesus for taking the blinders off my eyes, off my heart and mind!
I see clearly the ways of this world and I repent of my own actions and sin and I give my life freely to the LORD! HE is worthy!
That HE did not leave us or abandon us to this world, that man chose, our GOD is mighty in love that HE died for us and saved us from this dead world!

It has been the end times since Christ resurrected, but we are living in a time of escalated events and if you can look around this world and think man can save himself, think again!

This is the very reason Jesus died, because without God, we are headed for all out worldwide war and nothing but Jesus is going to stop it!

I pray that people will come to their senses and that God will remove the blinders from their eyes!
    In Jesus Name, Amen

"There's a story out here on the Christian Post that over half of Britons have no religion. Half! Imagine."

Yes, imagine! Isn't it wonderful, and the best part is that fear and superstition is dissipating in most civilized countries, including ours. More and more people are admitting to no religion in the US, and as the stigma of atheism grows less, and it is, more are admitting to that as well.

People who are parents now may be the peak generation for religion in this country, at least I hope so.

This is, in fact, symptomatic of a general Godlessness not just in Britain but across Europe overall. The smug intellectual religiosity exhibited by Edwards is par for the course in a land where atheists and agnostics far outnumber Christians. Add a growing and vocal Muslim underclass into the mix, and voila! You have this mess. There's a story out here on the Christian Post that over half of Britons have no religion. Half! Imagine.

Although I agree that sharia law is absolutely crazy, this is what you get when you mix religion with govt. and why our founding fathers accepted the notion of leaving them to their own domains.

"Christ the conquerer is coming soon to judge the world...in this generation even"

Sure he is. Sorry, but you guys have been saying it's the end times so many times I've lost count. So when 2020 rolls around and he still hasn't come will you still be regurgitating this same line, or will it be some other date and time?

Sharia law in Britain? Has the world gone completely mad? I think the answer is yes.

Christ the conquerer is coming soon to judge the world...in this generation even!

Unbelievers: repent and ask Christ into your life... there is not much time. There will be a rapture soon and you don't want to be left behind!

We are the final generation!....since the re creation of the state of israel in 1948...Jesus says this generation will not pass until they see the second coming of the Lord! In psalm 90:10 the Lord says the average life is 70 years(2018) and the rapture happens 7 years before the second coming of the Lord(2011 at most). Come to Christ...help save as many souls as possible...there is not much time for the unbelievers.
