Israel-Gaza Fighting Provokes Church Response

By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter

Recent Israel-Gaza missile exchanges have sparked renewed concerns over the delicate Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and prompted church bodies to offer moral voices in the ongoing conflict.

After a short stint in peace talks, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday he will resume negotiations with Israel – a turnabout from his statement earlier in the day when he said Palestinians will not talk with Israel until a cease-fire is reached.

Abbas had explained that peace was “our strategic choice,” and said it will end the Israeli “occupation” of the Palestinian territories and result in a Palestinian state, according to CNN.

Although Abbas did not disclose when talks will be resumed, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said based on the peace talk timetable, Palestinian and Israeli leaders are scheduled to meet next week, according to The Associated Press.

Israel on Monday ended a five-day military operation in Gaza that killed at least 110 Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers. More than half of the Palestinians killed were said to be civilians, including a six-month-old baby and several children.

The fight was sparked by Gaza militants who launched dozens of missiles into southern Israel, one of which killed a person. Palestinian rockets take place nearly every day but do not normally injure or kill anyone.

The World Council of Churches, the world’s largest ecumenical body, condemned the Israeli military for killing civilians in Gaza as well as militants in Gaza.

“We absolutely condemn these deadly attacks on civilians by the Israeli military on Gaza and by militants firing rockets from Gaza,” said WCC general secretary the Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia, in a statement. “Incessant violations of life and of human rights must stop.”

Kobia called on Israel to stop its blockade on Gaza, which affects the supply of food, fuel, medicine and other essential needs into the strip. Israel has allowed some fuel and medicinal supplies into Gaza, but has kept the border checkpoints closed except for emergency humanitarian needs.

Human rights groups have also protested against the blockade, arguing that Israel is punishing innocent civilians in their fight against the Hamas leadership.

Earlier this year, the United Methodist Board of Church and Society had urged its church members and agencies to divest from Caterpillar, Inc. because it accused the company of facilitating Israel’s destruction of Palestinian property. Moreover, Washington-based Methodist Federation for Social Action called for divestment from all “companies supporting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and other violations of human rights in Israel/Palestine.”

Mark Tooley, The Institute on Religion & Democracy’s director of UMAction, countered:

“Israel is unremittingly portrayed as the chief obstacle to Middle East peace by these radicalized United Methodist groups, and by extension, the United States is viewed as directly complicit through its support of Israel,” he argued. “Widespread parts of the United Methodist Church bureaucracy are claiming one primary solution to Middle East violence: punish Israel.” Continue »

    Dear Judy,

I believe God played a key role here. In Israel today the left secular humanist atheists have taken over the administration, that is why they lost to the 3900 Hisbullah Shiite over the northern border.
But I also do not align my views with the Haredim or Beiteinu, i.e. I do not agree with rabbi Eliyahu to carpet bomb Gaza and level it out because they said IDF should not abide by the Christian rule of engagement

I believe Israeli needs to repent and return to the value of the Torah.
Love God and love one another, including the Arab Christians and Palestinian Christians who are being pressurized to surrender to Islam.

    Luke 19:41-44
As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace, but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God coming to you.

And this is fulfilled in 70Anno Domini when General Titus destroyed Judea and Jerusalem. It took the Israeli around 1878 years to officially return to Eretz Yisrael. Hopefully this time they would hear and obey the Word of God and then God shall give them all the Holy land they need, from the Dan to the Negev and from the Med to the Jordan River.

What are these people reading? The American President and Ms. Rice claim to be Christians yet they are encouraging Israel to give up God's land. Israel keeps giving up realestate for peace yet nothing has changed, Islam wants Israil to go away. Professing Christians need to read their Bibles and see what God said about spliting up His land.

    From Indonesia,

To be fair and to actually say something on behalf of our silenced Christian brothers and sisters in PA, Christians should have got some real answers from Haniyeh and Mashaal instead of from Abu Mazen.

Nobody do anything to the Hamas terrorists when they slit Mr. Rami Ayyad’s throat back in Oct 2006, nobody do anything when the terrorist return and firebombed his house and book publishing shop. Currently instead of hundreds of thousands, actually there are only a mere 1500 Christians from 1.5 million Gazan Palestinians – majority of them emigrated to the US. Same goes for Bethlehem.

Next, those 1500 are not allowed to worship and have church services freely anymore and are pressured to embrace Islam and support this recent Jihad. Most Gazan Christians chose to stay in the west bank after the 2007 Christmas celebration in Bethlehem. These Christians who do not have adequate money to emigrate then stay or rent a place in Nablus, Ramallah or Jericho. The kassam attacks are a daily occurrence in Sderot, and the Jihadist sniper shot an Ecuadorian volunteer on nearby Kibbutz in January.

To tell the truth, people of Gaza are living so close together, jammed packed from a hut to another. These wedged living quarters can be found from Khan Younis to Gaza City to Beit Hanoun on their border. The kassam launcing takes place inside those close quarters - directed at Israel. And no wonder when the helicopters and the Sayeret Golani brigade went door to door and took out those kassam positions, some civilian casualties are included.

Because of the recent premeditated breach in Gazan border with Egypt, now rearmaments can be done easily and more kassam can be supplied directly to Gaza. It used to be a problem for the terrorist to transport the Saudi Wahabbist arms and money plus the Muslim Brotherhood drugs via underground tunnel. Now, the whole southern Israel is facing more threat from Gaza, not only to Sderot - now Beersheva is having similar troubles as well

I agree with Mr. Tooley, Church agencies should strive towards fairness and factuality, targeting Israel as the Middle-East unique villain, while virtually ignoring terrorism and radical Islam, is a gross disservice to members of The United Methodist Church and to the wider public.

A month ago, this recent military offensive has been discussed in the Israeli administration and agreed upon. They weigh between their recent defeat in the hands of the Shia Hisbullah (see Winograd) and the increased attacks on Sderot neighborhood from Beith Hanoun. Then the Isreali chose this military offensive.

FYI, Saleh Shehadeh has been a long time IDF target. And somebody should have told him not to put his kassam and his terrorists base in the same place as his living room, his children room and his kitchen. Saleh Shehadeh and his fellow terrorist had it coming for quite a long time.

JESUS is the answer for all violence, HE is the Prince of Peace!!! HE will redeem Jerusalem and Israel and restore HIS GLORY!!
May God comfort and surround the families of those slain and may HE bring conviction to those who promote this hatred. The more I see around this world, just causes me to draw ever closer to the Lord God!

I am standing with Israel and all our Jewish brethren!!! May God hide them in the shelter of HIS Shadow!!! In Jesus Name!!!

There are many who are standing with you Israel, and praying for you! Shalom and much love in Christ Jesus our LORD!
Lord God have mercy on Jerusalem and Israel for Your Glory Lord!

Perhaps someone could invite the people from the WCC to view the video of the terrorist attack on a seminary in Jerulasem in which 8 students were killed. But then they likely would assume that the Israelis precipitated the attack. I believe that thus far, the Israelis have been somewhat restrained, but at this point, I would not blame them if they carpet bombed all of Gaza. The WCC may think that there are "moderate" Muslims in Gaza, but moderate people do not celebrate sensless killing. Muslims preach holy war being the "right way" to establish Islam throughout the world. I for one, will fight them to the death to ,make sure that does not happen. At this point, the Israelis are doing our job for us -- we in America will eventually have to wake up and take on this issue, and it will not be done peacefully, for Muslim philosophy calls not for negotiation, but for holy war. Whatever Iserael s response -- I fully support them.

I have to assume that the WCC members who condemed Israeli action regading terrorist attacks never read the news or understand the terrorist threat. Alan Dershowitz in a recent article really summed up the issue regarding terrorism when he noted that Muslim mothers are encouraging their sons and daughters to become suicide bombers to further the world-wide strugle to implant Islam as the world-wide religion. Note that pregnant women, children and young people are constantly blowing themselves up in terrorist actions. Do the WCC people really believe that if Cuba constantly lobbed missles into Florida, that the US would not only respond, but would level Cuba. But then again, I must assume that the people cndeming Israel are from another planet, and not planet Earth. Or perhaps they have not read and understood the Koran which speaks of young people reaching the age of martyrdom. I thouhght leaders of any organization were supposed to be informed people. Guess not! Jay Dull

Well, what a surprise! The WCC takes yet another sideswipe at Israel, totalling ignoring the facts as usual. Maybe Dr. Kobia should plan a visit soon to Sderot or Ashkelon where he will have to spend most of his time in a bomb shelter...that's if the 30 second warning which goes off (at present) more than 40 times a DAY is enough time for him to get his spineless body to the nearest shelter. It's time he and his WCC colleagues took their heads out that part of their anatomy that rarely sees daylight and waken up to the truth of what is happening in the Middle East, instead of swallowing and then regurgitating the unending victimhood of those "poor Arabs" who occupy the stolen Israeli lands in Gaza and Judea and Samaria.
