The 'Oprahfication' of Eastern Mysticism

By S. Michael Craven|Christian Post Guest Columnist

Given the fact that we are beings created in the image of God, we have an intrinsic spiritual nature. In other words, we are spiritual and as such we have a natural inclination to satisfy or fill this essential aspect of our being. As Christ followers, we have been made to know that this need is finally and fully met through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that follows the reconciliation of our souls to God through faith in the atoning work of Christ Jesus.

However, as orthodox Christianity continues to ebb in the Western world there follows a spiritual vacuum and as it has been observed, nature abhors a vacuum. At present this spiritual void appears to have found its latest alternative to Jesus Christ in the convoluted and ambiguous world of New Age religion.

While the term “New Age spirituality” may conjure up images of incense, crystals, and Shirley MacLaine—or associations with flower haired hippies—this “new” spiritual movement, which is anything but new, has acquired a most powerful and influential advocate: Oprah Winfrey.

Recently Oprah announced that, beginning March 3rd, she will be offering a free 10-week interactive webinar based on the book, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by best-selling author Eckhart Tolle. Tolle, who is described as “a contemporary spiritual teacher who is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition … conveys a simple yet profound message with the timeless and uncomplicated clarity of the ancient spiritual masters: There is a way out of suffering and into peace.” In describing the thesis of his latest book, Tolle writes: “An essential aspect of this awakening consists in transcending our ego-based state of consciousness. This is a prerequisite not only for personal happiness but also for the ending of violent conflict endemic on our planet.” In other words, it is the alteration of our “consciousness” that is key to the salvation of men, not Jesus Christ and our shared problem is incorrect perceptions, not sin.
For anyone familiar with the world’s religions this, along with most of what passes for “New Age” spirituality is nothing more than ancient Eastern mysticism wrapped in modern Western attire.

Tolle, who experienced “a profound inner transformation” which “radically changed the course of his life” at the age of twenty-nine” became an active participant in A Course in Miracles in the years following. Published in 1975, A Course in Miracles is a spiritual self-study course representing primarily the thought system of monism, which is the idea that all is one (i.e. the Star Wars concept of “The Force”). Ironically, Oprah has been offering this course for free on her website since January 1, 2008.

Here are some sample excerpts from A Course in Miracles, which reveal teachings derived from Buddhism and other monistic or pantheistic philosophies:

Extend your perception beyond what your senses register. (Lesson 1)

That body does not mean anything….One thing is like another. (Lesson 1)

Everything you see is the result of your thoughts. There is no exception to this fact….salvation requires that you also recognize that every thought you have brings either peace or war; either love or fear. To trust in the force that moves the universe is faith. Faith isn’t blind, it’s visionary. Faith is believing that the universe is on our side and that the universe knows what it’s doing. (Lesson 16) Continue >>

the message of the cross is nonsense to those who are being destroyed, but it is God power to us who are being saved. The real "power of now" is not from Oprah and Eckhart Tolle, but from God.The power is the cross, and "now" is the word that the church emphasizes on it:The Holy past is present "now" with power.I challenge Oprah if she dare to speak on TV about the "real power of now" of the book:the coin of the temple isbn 1425905773

"A mind bent on suppressing or hindering the truth will ultimately find the lie it is chasing." - Ravi Zacharias

Oprah and the rest of the witches are desperate to design a contemporary and hip new religious structure for serving the "god" of self. There's really nothing new about it. Christians and evangelists need understand that it stems from the basic human nature called rebellion, that nature will always despise God's true Nature which is HOLY. They will create and invent every a legal excuse to justify themselves in their own self-righteousness.

Oprah seeks to be the High Priestess of the self-absorbed, and I assure you that birds of a feather will flock together. They heap upon themselves more and more so called spiritual laws, which ironically come straight out of the satanic bible. In a despicable display of human arrogance and insanity, these people refuse to see the sinfulness of human nature (even though we see mankind's nefarious exploits on the daily news.) They go to great lengths in defending their imaginary world of "disbelief" which views right/wrong as relative then somehow expect to see justice come out of it. “So they rationalize and seek to justify their personal temper tantrum against the One and only Holy God (who they know truly exists and has a different will than theirs') by proliferating their misconceptions about God to a public that has suffered from those misconceptions.” (Quote from http://evolutionfacts.blogspot.com )

Even Oprah’s “heaven” is sure going to be a lonely and destructive place as she and her disciples were duped into believing that being absorbed into a fiery nothingness where everybody becomes nobody, equally worthless, and cast into a subconscious meat-grinder over and over again, and yet forever isolated from actually knowing anything except “self.” It sounds like hell to me. Anyways how does Oprah and her gurus really know that what they are spouting to the public is true when they don’t even believe in absolute truth? The only reason they reject absolute truth it because they are really rejecting the ONE and ONLY GOD WHO IS HOLY and WHO ALONE GIVES IT.

Oprah denies that there is only one way; this sort of relativism is sweeping the globe. Watch for yourself -

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; - 2Timothy 4:3.

Great article. The worst quotes in the Course in Miracles that Oprah is teaching on XM radio are ones like

    * "There is no sin. . . "
    * "The journey to the cross should be the last `useless journey."
    * "Do not make the pathetic error of `clinging to the old rugged cross.'"
    * "The Name of Jesus Christ as such is but a symbol... It is a symbol that is safely used as a replacement for the many names of all the gods to which you pray."
    * "God is in everything I see."
    * "The recognition of God is the recognition of yourself."
    * "The oneness of the Creator and the creation is your wholeness, your sanity and your limitless power."
    * "The Atonement is the final lesson he [man] need learn, for it teaches him that, never having sinned, he has no need of salvation."

Oprah is promoting rank New Age heresy. Thank you for the warning!

What a comfort to hear true, Biblical teaching. May God bless you, Michael. And all who stand on his Word.
