WASHINGTON (AP) - One in 10 voters believes Barack Obama is Muslim, a mistaken impression that lingers across party lines, a poll showed Wednesday.

Fourteen percent of Republicans, 10 percent of Democrats and 8 percent of independents mistakenly think he is Muslim, according to a survey by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center. Just over half of each group correctly identified him as Christian, while about a third said they don't know his religion.

The false rumor that the Democratic presidential candidate and Illinois senator is Muslim has been fanned on the Internet and conservative talk radio.

It has persisted despite the recent controversy over divisive remarks by his longtime pastor at the Trinity United Church of Christ, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Those saying they have heard a lot about Wright's comments are about as likely as others to say they think Obama is Muslim, the poll showed.

Conservatives, less educated voters and white evangelical Protestants are likelier to believe Obama is Muslim, as are people from the South, the Midwest and rural areas, the poll showed. Nearly a quarter of white Democrats with unfavorable views of Obama say he is Muslim though overall, blacks are about as likely as whites to hold the misconception.

In an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll in January, 4 percent offered the word "Muslim" when asked to describe Obama.

The Pew poll was conducted March 19-22. It involved telephone interviews with 1,503 adults, including 618 Democratic and Democratic-leaning registered voters. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points for all adults and 4.5 percentage points for Democratic voters.

Gee,....an 82 year old President seems to sound better every week,..Ann Coulter had a commentary out in the last week somewhere I forget where I read it, on Barack and some exerpts from a book he wrote which were slightly shocking, and what is also shocking is we have ALOT of young people from the "mainstream" America yelling and screaming and fainting for him at Campaign rallies of his like they were at a Guns and Roses Concert,....scary......

Please, people!
Sen. Clinton's campaign is the source of the rumours that Sen. Obama is a muslim.
Right-wing talk radio is-- over and over-- pointing this out, and, moreover, inviting characterization of the Rev. Wright's "Christianity".
Note that whether Sen. Obama thinks he is a muslim (The word means, "one who submits to God's will) is not diagnostic. It is sufficient to say he is the MOST left-wing Senator in the United States, even to the left of the repeated-diver Sen. Kennedy, even to the left of Sen. "I served in Viet Nam" Kerry. Like tyrants and oligarchs he mistrusts The People, whom Our Creator created in His image.
He is the flimsiest of candidates. He is more fair-minded than Adlai Stevenson. he is more anti-war than George McGovern. He is more vitamin-deprived than Jimmy [sic] Carter. In fact, he lacks even the ameliorating experiences of attending the Naval Academy and having been a farmer, even a peanut farmer. He wants to raise taxes more than Walter "Fritz" Mondale. And he would look sillier in an Army helmet than Gov. Dukakis (R.I.P.). On the othe hand, his dad wasn't one of the biggest segregationists in the U.S. Senate, and he did not grow up in a hotel suite in Washigton, D.C., like V.P. Gore. Still, though, Michelle Obama is not even close to Tipper Gore!

Followers of Jesus Christ empowered by the Holy Spirit say and pray “God Bless America.” However, the Holy Spirit of God would never inspire a true Christian to say or pray “God Damn American” in any context, much less as part of a taped public sermon with children involved.

Holy Scriptures say to test the spirits (1 John 4:1). Reverend Wright obviously has a fiery spirit that is condemning at times, particuarly when he curses our nation on stage. It's certaintly not Christ-like or characteristic of the Holy Spirit. Nonetheless, most of his life Senator Obama has trusted and tollerated this particular pastor. Although Reverend Wright is retiring, he will remain as Senior Pastor, and his replacement essentially agrees with him in spirit and truth. Senator Obama must agree with them in spirit, if not in truth.

There is reason to not trust the spirit in which Reverend Wright made such remarks, and so there is reason as well to question the spirit that has been and will be leading the youthfull Obama Hussein Barack as a professed Christian and prospective president of our nation. May God’s Holy Spirit be our guide.

The time will come, That Obama will declare he is returing to the faith of his father, mark my words. And hs is no more Christian than the man in the moon.

God said, You will know a man by his fruit. Because of a lack of Spiritual Discernment within the Church today, Most Christians will accept just about anything that comes down the pike.

With multiple denominations and/or sects of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths how can anyone claim what is true for sure? This is all a waste of time.

Obama calls himself a Christian, but said he believes there are many paths to God not just Jesus. His friend and big financial helper Oprah calls herself a Christian but voices the same, many paths to God as well. Has anyone especially their "Rev. Wright" tell them that Jesus is the only way to the Father?

Wake up Christians, I have read that Muslims are to lie to the infidels if it furthers their cause. Has anyone else heard that about lying to infidels??

Correctly identified him as a Christian? Are you kidding me? This guy is no more a Christian than his pastor. Jesus said not to judge on the outward appearance. "by their fruits you shall know them." What fruit is there coming forth from these so-called men of God? They are wolves in sheep's clothing.
