WASHINGTON (AP) - White House hopeful Barack Obama suggests he would have left his Chicago church had his longtime pastor, whose fiery anti-American comments about U.S. foreign policy and race relations threatened Obama's campaign, not stepped down.

"Had the reverend not retired, and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country, for all its flaws, then I wouldn't have felt comfortable staying at the church," Obama said Thursday during a taping of the ABC talk show, "The View." The interview was broadcast Friday.

In his sermons over the years, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright has railed against the United States and accused it of bringing on the Sept. 11 attacks by spreading terrorism. He also has said the government invented AIDS to destroy "people of color" and has shouted "God damn America" for its treatment of minorities.

Videos of his remarks circulated on the Internet and on television.

In an attempt to quiet the controversy, Obama gave a speech two weeks ago in which he sharply condemned Wright's remarks but did not repudiate him.

Obama said Wednesday he has spoken with Wright, who retired from Trinity United Church of Christ last month but remains as a senior pastor.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, broke her silence on the matter Tuesday, saying she would have parted company with a pastor who spoke about the country the way Wright has.

Asked about the controversy Wright's comments have created, Republican John McCain said while campaigning in Denver: "I can only say that I am sure, knowing Senator Obama, that he does not share the extreme views that were expressed that I saw on television."

Just like Satan, the media, distorting the truth. How can one say that "Obama Would Have Left Church if Wright Stayed"?

When in fact Obama's words were:

"Had the reverend not retired, and had he not acknowledged that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized what I believe is the greatness of this country, for all its flaws, then I wouldn't have felt comfortable staying at the church"

That is how the church and all Christian are suppose to respond, but the world wouldn't know that, would it? That is exactly how a Christian is to respond, as Obama did.

Resentment, anger, hatred, and bitterness are the results of unforgiveness. When we are offended, regardless of the magnitude of the offense, and choose not to forgive, then we carry the past with us. This principle holds true from the individual to the multitude. Choosing not to forgive is exactly what Satan wants to keep us seperated because he knows that there is power in numbers. If we were to forgive and unite, then the powers of the evil one would surely be overtaken. If one gets really honest about the state of our country we can surely see that we need to unite more so now than ever by forgiving the past, allow Jesus to lead us and unite us. Can anyone imagine what it would be like if Jesus had said on the cross, "Father look what they did to me, instead of Father forgive them for they know not what they do." I believe we need to take a hard look at what Jesus meant when He said, “40"The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.' Matthew 25:40 This scripture applies to both, the one who committed the offense as well as the one holds unforgiveness. When one really understands their identity in Christ as one of His children then offensive people do not have any effect upon us. It is when we allow our flesh nature to dictate our response to an offense that we fall short.
Forgiveness is not based on our feelings, it is based on our obedience to forgive, then God will change our feelings.

I think that there are probably numerous African-Americans that are holding onto grudges from past injustices. The problem is when they tend to speak in ways that lump all non-black people in the same category of hate, i.e., calling America the KKKA. I would not be quick to say that a person making such groundless accusations is necessarily of the devil. What I will say is that whenever any of us take our eyes off Jesus it is an opportunity to sink. I can forgive a man for unbridled spite.

The problem with Obama is that in a run for presidency in a country that desires to leave the past behind and develop a mutual common respect for people regardless of their ethnicity (which is revealed by the mere fact that so many non-blacks actually look forward to the day of an African-American to sitting in the oval office) as many considered him to be that man, this simply dispels that he was a myth.

Followers of Jesus Christ empowered by the Holy Spirit say and pray “God Bless America.” However, the Holy Spirit of God would never inspire a true Christian to say or pray “God Damn American” in any context, much less as part of a taped public sermon with children involved.

Holy Scriptures say to test the spirits (1 John 4:1). Reverend Wright obviously has a fiery spirit that is condemning at times, particuarly when he curses our nation on stage. It's certaintly not Christ-like or characteristic of the Holy Spirit. Nonetheless, most of his life Senator Obama has trusted and tollerated this particular pastor. Although Reverend Wright is retiring, he will remain as Senior Pastor, and his replacement essentially agrees with him in spirit and truth. Senator Obama must agree with them in spirit, if not in truth.

There is reason to not trust the spirit in which Reverend Wright made such remarks, and so there is reason as well to question the spirit that has been and will be leading the youthfull Obama Hussein Barack as a professed Christian and prospective president of our nation. May God’s Holy Spirit be our guide.

it is nice to know that Mr. Obama will stand up for what is right, uh, at least that is what he intends to do, if things were different.

What a bunch of twaddle. He sat there for 20 years listening to this person's "teaching" and now that people have been made aware of what's actually being preached in this place suddenly Obama would have left if the guy had stayed. It amazes me that people can't seem to see through this guy.
