Q: Where did the devil come from, according to the Bible? I remember hearing somewhere that at first he was an angel and served God, but then he rebelled and became evil. Is this true? Why would he do that? Mrs. M.C.
A: Although the Bible doesnt go into detail about the devils origin, it does indicate that he was an angel who rebelled against God and was cast out of heaven as a result: How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! (Isaiah 14:12, KJV).
Why did he rebel against God? The reason can be summarized in one word: pride. He became jealous of Gods position, and in his pride he decided to lead a revolution and take Gods place: You said in your heart, I will ascend to heaven. ... I will make myself like the Most High (Isaiah 14:13-14). He failed but his goal is still the same: to take Gods place.
You need to remember two important truths about Satan. First, he is real, and he is powerful. Dont make the mistake of thinking he is a cute little cartoon figure with a red suit and a pitchfork for he isnt. He is completely evil, and his goal is to block Gods work in our lives. The Bible says he is like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).
But the second thing you need to remember is that the devil is a defeated foe! By His death and resurrection Jesus Christ conquered sin and death and Hell and someday Christ will come again to pronounce judgment on Satan and his followers. On whose side are you Christs or Satans? Dont give in to the devils lies, but commit your life to Christ and become His follower.

Jerry2, please don't take offense to this, but why don't you believe in the Devil? Do you not see the evil in this world, the evil he started so long ago? Sometimes the only thing that gets me through the day, when I see all that is wrong with this world, is thinking of my perfect savior, and his eternal victory over evil and longing for the day when His kingdom will be established on earth.
Jerry2, for the sake of intelligent conversation, who is the "ancient superstitious person who had a wild imagination'? If you provide credible resources, maybe we can dialogue further.
Since your first statement was deleted, I am assuming due to inappropriate content (maybe profanity, or what ever), but your second comment leads me to believe that you are not a Christian. Which brings me to ask, if you are not a Christian why are you responding on a Christian site? It would seem logical if you do not ascribe to the beliefs you would not frequent the site. I am not a Muslim, so I would not frequent any Muslim sites or respond to any blogs there in. Just an opening for conversation not to debate or argue.
Satan was created by an ancient superstitious person who had a wild imagination.
It just amazes me that somebody deleted my last comment. What are you people so afraid of?
Not to discount Rev. Graham's answer, but it does not fully answer the original question. According the scripture, the "I will" declarations of Satan in Isa. 14 were a result of "iniquity" that was found in his heart according to Eze. 28:14-16. Originally Satan was Lucifer, the anointed cherib, not an archangel, like so many have thought. God found iniquity in him and cast him out of heaven. Thus, he became Satan, or the Devil. Be careful when you say God created Satan. God did not. Lucifer became Satan, just as innocent man became a sinner after his fall from Grace. From the iniquity, pride set in, and so on and so forth. So to answer the last part of the original question - yes it is true because iniquity was found in him.
Satan was created by God and was a good angel who made a devil out of himself because of freewill and PRIDE.
