Bishop Denounces Episcopal Head for 'Rude' Letter

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

Despite protest from the head of The Episcopal Church, clergy from a diocese that is moving toward a split with the national church are meeting with Archbishop Gregory Venables, head of the conservative Anglican Province of the Southern Cone in South America.

Venables was invited by the Rt. Rev. Jack Iker, bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth, to discuss this weekend issues affecting the diocese and the global Anglican Communion which has been wracked by division.

Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, however, urged Venables "not to bring further discord into The Episcopal Church" by accepting the invitation. His visit would be "an unprecedented and unwarranted invasion of, and meddling in, the internal affairs of this province," the Episcopal head said in a letter Tuesday.

The Diocese of Fort Worth is currently in the process of withdrawing from The Episcopal Church and realigning with the Province of the Southern Cone over what conservatives say is the national church's departure from Scripture and traditional Anglicanism. The diocese approved the split in November and will again vote later this year to finalize the withdrawal.

The Diocese of San Joaquin became the first full diocese to secede in December.

In response to Jefferts Schori's letter, Bishop Iker of Fort Worth expressed shock over the "rude letter" she released.

"Far from being 'an unwarranted interference,' he (Venables) is coming at my request as an honored visitor and guest speaker," Iker said in a letter Wednesday.

He denounced Jefferts Schori for her attitude and actions that he argued "bring further discord" and accused her of meddling in the internal affairs of the diocese.

Over the past year, Jefferts Schori and Iker have exchanged letters about Fort Worth's vote to leave last November and the Episcopal head has continued to emphasize the possibility of reconciliation between Iker, the diocese and the wider Episcopal Church, according to the Rev. Dr. Charles K. Robertson, the Episcopal presiding bishop's canon.

Iker said otherwise in his letter this week.

"There are no efforts at reconciliation proceeding within this province, which is one reason why faithful people continue to leave TEC (The Episcopal Church) in droves," he said.

Venables is scheduled to meet with clergy from the Diocese of Fort Worth on Friday and attend a diocesan convocation Saturday. He will be a guest preacher at two local churches Sunday.

The Southern Cone has about 22,000 members across Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay. Last November, its provincial synod agreed to welcome into the province "on an emergency and pastoral basis" Episcopal Church dioceses "taking appropriate action to separate from The Episcopal Church."

The Episcopal Church is the U.S. arm of Anglicanism.

    St Paul here,
"But I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually
immoral ... not even to eat with such a person. For what have I to do with judging those who
also are outside? Do not you judge those who are inside? But those who are outside God judges. Therefore put away from yourselves the evil person ." 1 Cor 5; 11-13

boomershank, I haven't stated any opinions about homosexuality though I have been condemned by you. That's says a lot right there. Moreover your self-righteous tone is very similar to those 150 years ago defending the firmly established Biblical concept of slavery, with it's long standing tradition in the Church, and among the leading civilizations of the worlds, who went out of their way to condemn those God-forsaken Abolitionists.

St John there is abig difference in judgmentalism and discernment, and according to the Bible which the Episcopal Church is forsaking I detect apostasy from the leadership on down in this church. No matter how you condone homosexualism I for one will not and flee from those that would advocate such a position in the chuch. The chuch should be pursuing holiness which homosexuals and their perverted life style can not and will not be tolerated in the church. The church is a place that God is preparing His eventual bride for eternity and she is to be pure and holy, not tainted with wordliness and political correctness. These are my thoughts and I feel sorry for people like you that is be led by the god of this world.

This article seems to be a magnetic for the judgmental and self-righteous, about which Jesus had a great deal more to say than homosexuality.

Schori is appearing more and more like the Jezebel in the book of The Revelation who is seducing her followers Into immorality, which St. John has taken hook, line and sinker. Repent for your redemption is very near, don't be misled by these liberal apostates.

Johnmorriosn 9, you are wrong. The judge in VA simply said that a 1868 VA law designed to protect the Southern Baptists from losing their property to the northern Baptists could be applied here, so the the two sides will now go to court and see if the terms of the law are met. In 1868 90% of the VA Baptist churches had supported slavery and separated from their northern counterparts. In 2008, less than 8% of the Diocese of VA wants to separate. We'll see if they can take the property with them, but more importantly 140 after the law was enacted, most Christians are embarrassed and ashamed at the VA Baptist churches Scriptural defense of slavery. I wonder if in another 140 years we will feel the same about the Scriptural defense against homosexuality.

Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori is a complete joke, as an anglican, I can tell the reason they want all the property, is that they are losing their @$$ in numbers and they need to be able to sell the building to keep going......I don't think she would God if He slapped her on her @$$!!!!!!!!!!!

It's interesting to note how heretical national church leaders resort to their "authority" and how nobody can step on "their" turf, rather than looking to church history and the scriptures. They look like misguided power trippers, having a form of external godliness (those clerical robes and clown hats), but denying the power of the gospel to change sinners, choosing instead to try to make sin the norm. How do these people sleep at night?

I read that the TEC lost the property battle in VA, and the judge said that the congrations that owned the buildings could keep them since they occupy and paid for them, and that the hersay of the leadership (ordination of gay alcoholic Bishops...)was grounds for the faithful Christians to leave the secular tomb of Henry the Eight.

It was a balmy California evening. I had gone for a jog before I was to speak at a leadership conference. I still can't recall how I got there, but I found myself sitting on a curb
