Employee Fired Over 'Anti-Gay' Column

By Aaron Leichman|Christian Post Reporter

Pro-family groups and first amendment supporters have reacted with outcry to the dismissal of a faculty member of the University of Toledo who questioned whether homosexuality is a civil rights issue.

"She was speaking as a private citizen when she wrote her column and, clearly, our Constitution protects speech, and there shouldn't be a consequence to that free speech as far as discriminating against somebody based on their speech and the content of that speech," Brian Rooney, spokesman for the Thomas More Law Center, a Christian legal group, said, according to Cybercast News Service.

Crystal Dixon, associate vice president of human resources, drew criticism when she expressed opposition to an editorial that compared the efforts to legalize same-sex “marriage” as equal to the struggle for racial equality among African Americans.

“As a Black woman who happens to be an alumnus of the University of Toledo's Graduate School, an employee and business owner, I take great umbrage at the notion that those choosing the homosexual lifestyle are 'civil rights victims. Here's why. I cannot wake up tomorrow and not be a Black woman. I am genetically and biologically a Black woman,” she wrote in a column in the local Toledo Free Press.

“Daily, thousands of homosexuals make a life decision to leave the gay lifestyle evidenced by the growing population of PFOX (Parents and Friends of Ex Gays) and Exodus International just to name a few,” she added.

After the column’s appearance, Dixon was promptly suspended last month, and now, in the most recent development, fired from her position by faculty for what they described as values that "do not accord” with the University of Toledo.

Rooney of the Thomas More Law Center said that they would definitely challenge the university on legal grounds for what they said was a clear case of “viewpoint discrimination.”

In an email supportive of Dixon, the conservative Family Research Council (FRC) said Dixon’s termination from the university was yet another instance of double standards and prejudice against Christians.

“As a private citizen, Dixon was well within her rights to voice her opinion on social issues regardless of how those views may be perceived by the University,” the FRC said. “Despite what UT believes, Christians have just as much right to air their opinions as liberal secularists. And when they do, the U.S. Constitution is there to ensure that they are fully protected.”

Another conservative, Matt Barber, policy director for cultural issues at Concerned Women for America, commented, “Just because many Christians have a viewpoint that is unpopular in leftist circles, does not mean those leftists have a right to violate the law and discriminate against Christians,” according to Cybercast News Service.

The day will come that not only can public employees be fired for opposing homosexuality or abortion; they might well face both civil and criminal penalties for engaging in "hate crimes." Then will come the day when we'll see pastors dragged out of the pulpit in handcuffs for preaching against such sins. All of this was foretold by Jesus and it’s going to get much worse. That doesn't mean we shouldn't take political, civil, and Christian actions to try and correct this situation since we’re supposed to be the salt of the earth. In the meantime we need to pray for Ms. Dixon.

What ever happened to free speech? Since when can a person loose their job for writing their opinion in a newspater editorial. What did she sy? "Please consider this opinion, homosexuality is not the the same asreacial descrimination? Since a person can't decide that they do not want to be "Afro-American" and a homosexual can decide not to practice "homosexuality any more!" Racial ethnicity is a genetic trait homosexuality is a "life style practice!"
I contend her only crime was when she stated "God" (the bible), creates all people of infinite value and people choices have consequences!" [The crime was using God and the Bible in an anti-God culture!"
Why don't we hear the "Afro-American leaders, NAACP and other groups speaking out on this? What about the EEO, or are there other extenuating circumstances!"

If we turn a blid eye to our christian views of homosexuality, they will all go to hell. Aren't we as followers of christ supposed to speak and do as He did. Homosexuality is an abomanation unto the Lord. His holy word tells us this. We are supposed to LOVE the sinner and HATE the SIN. Besides turning a blind eye and being silent on many moral issues, is what got this country like it is. We NED to stand up for our beliefs, and pray for those that persecute us , and for those that are dommed to hell to turned their lives to Christ! I have seen it happen alot of times in my life, it can happen.

According to the institution, the reason she was fired was directly related to this article. From the instituion itself:

"The public position Ms. Dixon took in the Toledo Free Press is in direct contradiction to university policies and procedures, as well as the institutional core values as defined in our strategic plan, and called into question her continued ability to lead a critical function within the administration as personnel actions or decisions taken in her capacity as associate vice president for human recourses could be challenged or placed at risk," said the statement, attributed to Lawrence J. Burns."

As for the "untrue propoganda" about ex-homosexuals, one only has to do a Google search and find out it is not untrue at all.

    So, who is spewing propoganda?

When she wrote that “daily, thousands of homosexuals make a life decision to leave the gay lifestyle," she should have been disciplined for spreading untrue propoganda as a university official. If she truly believes this stuff, then it would make it very difficult for her to carry out her job effectively and the university was placed in a very difficult position.
Bottom line: There's probably a lot we don't know about this case. People seldom get fired for one infraction.

Well, this is a common practice for universities. I remember hearing from my friend that she got kicked out of class for writing a Christian paper. The teacher was a lesbian. I kinda thought since they advocate tolerance that a Christian paper shouldn't be so hard to grade, but I guess the teacher got indignant about her faith and her willingness to share her own views. I don't know what sort of paper she wrote but it shouldn't be so horrible for a Humanities class. Plus I seen what my friend writes. Because this is the net, I rather keep the teacher and my friend's name unknown. I guess it's only tolerant if it's not Christian D:

Sad day for the right to state one's opinion on an editiorial page of a newspaper without fear of "consequences." It is indeed sad what happened. But even more disheartening is that there are people, who call themselves Christians, who support the actions of the University of Toledo. Let us pray that the good people at the Thomas More Center are able to reintroduce the University of Toledo administration to that little thing called the US Constitution.

Wow! What would happen if they fired all the people who spoke against my civil right to be a Christian? Who would be left to teach in our universities???

See what happens when you speak up against sin? The homosexuals know they live in sin and they don't want to hear it. It's ok for them to call Christians bigots but when Christians say anything negative about gays, we're silenced immediately. What a godless society we live in. Jesus said we would be persecuted, but also that before the world hated us, it hated Him first.Welcome to Christianity in todays world Mrs. Dixon. May God bless you for speaking the truth.
