Prominent Evangelical Names Four Modern Horsemen of the Apocalypse

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

INDIANAPOLIS – Many people say evangelicals are stuck on one issue – whether it’s abortion or same-sex “marriage” – when speaking out to defend moral values. But to those defending, it’s not just a single issue.

  • Richard Land

Dr. Richard Land, president of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, speaks during the 16-million member denomination's annual gathering in Indianapolis on Tuesday, June 10, 2008.

“Marriage is a single issue?” Dr. Richard Land, president of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, posed to thousands of Southern Baptists Tuesday. “It’s the building block of society.”

Land believes there are four “modern horsemen of the apocalypse” that are “riding forth to wreak havoc and destruction in our society” – the denial of the sanctity of human life, the rise of hardcore Internet pornography, the radical homosexual agenda and its attempt to undermine marriage and radical Islamic jihadism.

“Make no mistake about it. Radical Islamic jihadism has declared war on America and American civilization and Christianity,” Land emphatically said.

When former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft approached Land and two other prominent evangelical leaders about six years ago, asking what they believe is the most crucial issue facing Americans at the time, Land said Internet pornography has begun to destroy the lives of more men and women than abortion. While abortion would have been his answer if he was asked even a few years earlier, the growth of what he has labeled “the most grotesque perversions of human sexuality” on the Internet has overtaken that issue, he said.

With pornography readily available on the Internet and on wireless devices, Americans including many in the church have fallen victim to the activity. Many Christian groups call it a moral crisis, and reports indicate that as much as 50 percent of men in the pews and the pulpit view pornography, some of whom are addicted.

Still, Land believes abortion and the radical homosexual agenda – both of which evangelicals are widely known to oppose – are greatly devastating society.

“We’re not going to exchange the [abortion] agenda,” Land said Tuesday at the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting while affirming that they will continue to be concerned about the sanctity of life.

What is a person is not just a single issue, Land stressed. “Every human being deserves protection from conception.”

And what is a male and female is not a single issue, he added. Quoting Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, Land said, “If the family goes, everything goes,” as he referred to the radical homosexual agenda.

While evangelicals face four major battles, Land called the Southern Baptists to first take a look at themselves. The rise of the born-again and evangelical Christian population has been staggering over the past few decades, Land pointed out. Yet the impact that evangelicals have had on society has been very little.

“We experienced growth of evangelicalism and yet our culture is worse off in almost every way except race and sexual discrimination,” he said. Rather than being the salt and the light for the world, he said they have been “salted and lit” by the culture.

Calling evangelicals to fall on their knees in repentance, Land said the only answer to these problems is a revival – a revival that begins with them.

    believer,
I'm not sure if you have seen this or what you know about the Frankfurt School but I highly recommend this as a read to see what the foundation of cultural Marxism is (AKA; political correctness or progressivism) and how it is now running rampant in America to destroy the traditional family http://www.freecongress.org/centers/cc/index.aspx
See how Obama is using the topics and his use of "democracy" (Vs Constitutional Republic) and his technique at deconstruction.

Obama is a disciple of the Marxist Saul Alinsky who created the "advocacy centers" in Chicago that Obama was recruited into after law school.

    believer,
you and Dr Land are right on and our nation fits the pattern:
The Decline of the Family; Nations most often fall from within, and this fall is usually due to a decline in the moral and spiritual values in the family. As families go, so goes a nation.
This has been the main premise of thinkers from British historian J. D. Unwin to Russian sociologist Pitirim Sorokin who have studied civilizations that have collapsed. In his book Our Dance Has Turned to Death, Carl Wilson identifies the common pattern of family decline in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. Notice how these seven stages parallel what is happening in our nation today.
    1. men ceased to lead their families in worship. Their view of God became naturalistic, mathematical, and mechanical.
    2. men selfishly neglected care of their wives and children to pursue material wealth, political and military power, and cultural development.
    3. change in men's sexual values. Men who were preoccupied with business or war either neglected their wives sexually or became involved with lower-class women or with homosexuality
    4. . The role of women at home and with children lost value and status. Women were neglected and their roles devalued. Soon they revolted to gain access to material wealth and also freedom for sex outside marriage. Marriage laws were changed to make divorce easy.
    5. husbands and wives competed against each other for …. This resulted in hostility and frustration and possible homosexuality in the children. Many children were unwanted, aborted, abandoned, molested, and undisciplined. The breakdown of the home produced anarchy.
    6. selfish individualism grew and carried over into society, fragmenting it into smaller and smaller group loyalties. The nation was thus weakened by internal conflict. making the nation more vulnerable to its enemies.
    7. Finally, unbelief in God became more complete, parental authority diminished, and ethical and moral principles disappeared, affecting the economy and government. There was no way to save them except by a dictator who arose from within or by barbarians who invaded from without.
Social commentator Michael Novak, writing on the importance of the family, said:
One unforgettable law has been learned through all the disasters and injustices of the last thousand years: If things go well with the family, life is worth living; when the family falters, life falls apart.

Believer you are right on in the points you make. There are those who suffer from Godphobia. They have a fear that if God is real, then they will have to accept sin is real.

Remember Jesus said in John 3:18-21, "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

Believer, you are right on in your points. You must consider the fact that this web page is monitored by group of Jesusphobes. They have what is called Godphobia. They are afraid that if God is honored by their life and His word is applicable to them, then they will have to cast off the sin that so easily entangles them.

Remember what Scripture says in John 3:18-21, "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Take courage my brother. God is on His throne and sin will be vanquished.

It is threads like these that make me want to turn away from the CP forever.
BLASPHEMY!!! I am 32; I've only been a Christian for just over a year; I worship and revere God in spirit and truth...
This is utter BLASPHEMY. It is absolutely true that Jesus is the light, and that the light makes manifest what has been festering in the dark.
When you hold God's Word up to garbage like the majority of the posts in here, it is so utterly clear that we, brothers and sister in Christ, are living in the TRUTH, and the END of this wicked system is near. Oh Lord please come soon. Judge those who hate you. Father, help me forgive those who despise you. You people absolutely GRIEVE the Holy Spirit. I pray that God will come as swiftly as the flood in the time of Noe. I marvel at how Jesus could be so forgiving on that cross. Soon brothers and sisters, they will look more beautiful than ever, and attract and draw together the entire heathen world, and they will HATE US because they HATE HIM. The persecution will be severe and we need to have faith. Lord, increase our faith. Lord that they would know Jesus.
In love, fear, trembling and with a broken heart,

    Your Brother in Christ.

    THIS DAY IS WONDERFUL!!!!

Come now, all you wonderful Christians! Follow Jesus's example and let LOVE into your hearts! Accept same-sex marriages and forever more you will be more like Christ.

I challenge: Do you really know the spirit of your Bible? I think not! You are lost! The Bible is a historical document frozen in time back 2000 years ago. How much the world has changed!

Consider this: Our U.S. Constitution has an amendment process. Some laws become irrelevant. Admit that the Bible has irrelevant information, my Dear Christians. Do you not know??

Follow the LOVE of JESUS! Accept these glories same-sex unions. Accept the world isn't flat. Accept that the sun doesn't orbit around the earth. Accept that women have a voice. Accept that LOVE can exist and be legally recognized among two consenting adults!

    Man + Man = Love
    Woman + Woman = Love
    Man + Woman = Love

MY FELLOW CHRISTIANS! BE LIKE JESUS AND ACCEPT LOVE!

ifeelfine, those were the results of the moral decay that destroyed both the Roman and Greek Empires from within, but I keep forgetting I'm referring to history courses that were taught prior to political correctness taking over.

believer: You clearly need to freshen up on your ancient Greek and Roman history. Both of those civilizations faltered because they stretched themselves too thin militarily and economically - just like GWB and the current administration are doing right now. And Land is making news because he is touching on the hot button issues and calling them the four modern horsemen of the apocalypse.

hlerwin, yes you do see signs of a Christian Agenda it's called the fulfillment of God's Great Commission, taking the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost so that everyone will have the opportunity to be saved and to become the Christ-like person God created them to be so they too can have the awesome opportunity to join God in not only fulfilling His Great Commission, but the opportunity to live with Him in heaven for all of eternity. And a person does that by repenting of their sin and asking Jesus Christ to come into their lives as both Savior and Lord. Hopefully, if you haven't made this most important decision you'll do so before it's too late and if you need to know how to do that I know a number of people who blog this site who would be more than willing to help you, myself included.

"THERE IS NO HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA!!!!!! "

Head in sand? We wrestle not against flesh and blood.... There is an agenda and homosexuality is a part of it. The agenda is to devalue the Gospel of Jesus the Christ.

  • Sun Jun 15, 2008 9:08 am Agree: 1   Disagree: 1

seperate, you really don't believe that there is no homosexual agenda and that part of it is to get their sinful lifestyle accepted by getting same-sex marriage amendments passed throughout our land. Please read their own publications about what their agenda is and realize they do indeed have an agenda. But even if your right what's next legalizing polygamy or how about we do away with all parameters to ensure that every person has the right to legitamize their perverse lifestyles if the purpose of these amendments are simply to give every person in our country the same rights as everybody else.

  • Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:00 am Agree: 2   Disagree: 2

THERE IS NO HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA!!!!!! Especially one "to undermine marriage". The gay marriage push was ONLY to grant EVERY CITIZEN of this country the SAME RIGHTS AS EVERYONE ELSE. To single out a group of people and deny them legal rights IS DISCRIMINATION! Again - THERE IS NO AGENDA!

biggie, first of all I never used the 80% figure you'll have to address that to rollin4him, secondly I never claimed that God supports me to the contrary with the help of the Holy Spirit I do my best to live my life in total compliance both to His Will and His Word. But more important than that you need to realize that a day is coming when every knee will bend and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, the question is when will you do that because when you do that will determine your eternal destiny. Feel free to take all the cheap shots at me you want because I know with all certainty where and with who I'll be spending eternity and it has absolutely nothing to do with me being on my high horse, but rather with my Christ going to the cross and dying for my sins and my accepting Him as my only Lord and Savior. And biggie Christ stands ready to not only forgive you of your sins and save you as He did me, but He also stands ready to free you from any sinful lifestyle that is holding you as prisoner if you'll only let Him.

  • Sun Jun 15, 2008 4:17 am Agree: 1   Disagree: 4

Hi believer - there you go again. Of course YOU have a direct line into the insight of God. For you dreamt it up, therefore God must support you. Further, show me your citation of your 80%, and I will prove you either to be a lier, or a bafoon ingornant to believe anything in writing to advance your own pathetic cause.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself! Acting like a Christian, but in reality doing the devil's work advancing your own ego.

Get off your high horse about your claims to know God's wishes. Guess what? There are thousands of Gods, and your interpretation means nothing.

True believers of many diverse religions are insulted by your ignorant claim to have a direct connection with God. Grow up. You are nobody, and certainly not enlightened.

sunshine, sounds like based on your responses you have a hard time handling God's truth let alone obeying it. Plus you appear to be afraid to answer the tough questions with regards to the involvement of NAMBLA in the same-sex marriage issue. Plus I don't think I have a direct connection to God I know with all certainty I do, because Jesus Christ is my Savior and Lord and I desire to love, trust, and obey Him with all my being even if it means upsetting people like yourself who promote ideas that are adamantly opposed to God's Word.

ohhh believer! what a simpleton you are. Decay of moral value? Perhaps its the value to work hard! America will remain on top if we commit our workforce to equality, with rights for all employees, including those who have a different sexual orientation.

Corporate America understands this, and thats why more and more companies are providing same-sex couples benefits equal to heterosexuals.

The world is changing, and for the better. Get on board with the modernization of the country!

I personally believe the U.S.A.'s better days are ahead of us.

  • Sat Jun 14, 2008 12:55 pm Agree: 12   Disagree: 6

sunshine, your ignorance is showing if you had read your history lessons in school you would see that nations like Rome and Greece self-destructed as a result of moral decay from within not from attacks from without and please do not put words in my mouth. Richard Land is doing a great job in keeping the churches of the SBC aware of those legal and moral issues that are having or will have an impact on our country, families, and churches. My marriage of 33 years is in great shape because I stay away from internet porn along with all other forms of porn, but as a pastor I know too many marriages that have and are being destroyed by husbands and/or wives getting caught up in internet porn.

  • Sat Jun 14, 2008 11:55 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 3

Hi Believer - I think you are right that Dr. Land is simply a sensationalist trying to grab for headlines by making incendiary remarks. this is all for show.

Honestly, despite your claim to be all-knowing for the fall of civilisation, the root cause is in fact work ethic, economics, and military readiness.

Sorry, internet porn or perversion or whatever spin you want to place is not the culprit. But it makes headlines, and emboldens any yahoo who knows how to cut n' paste comments from the Bible to feel superior.

How is your marriage, believer? Is your marriage about ready to fall apart due to your obsession with internet porn? Is your marriage on the verge of divorce because gay marriage is now legal in California?

Get real... none of these issues are causing the fall of civilisation. They are red herrings. They sell newspapers. they drawn attention to desperate preachers seeking self agrandizement!

  • Sat Jun 14, 2008 11:00 am Agree: 7   Disagree: 4

Anyone who is a student of history knows that great nations in the past have fallen due to the very issues Richard Land addressed with regards to the morals and values in our country today, that is not only his passion but it is also the areas that fall under the responsibilities of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission that he oversees within the Southern Baptist Convention. This agency is one of many within the SBC that deals with issues that are impacting both our nation and world. Megalith, as for the issues you spoke to such as famine and hunger the SBC is addressing those as well but because they are not hotbutton issues in the media today the excellent work that is being done by the SBC in these areas often goes unnoticed and unreported. Richard Land just shared a small part of what we as Southern Baptists are all about but because the issues his agency deals with are such controversial issues they are the ones that the media will most often pick-up on. But at the same time the issue of porn is truly a serious issue to be dealt with because it is destroying lives, marriages, and families throughout our nation and world.

  • Sat Jun 14, 2008 5:58 am Agree: 5   Disagree: 2

It's interesting to see how someone can live in a world ravaged by famine, poverty, climate change, AIDS, and war, and still think something as relatively benign as internet pornography warrants as lofty a title as "Horseman of the Apocalypse".
Dr. Land and those of his ilk are fretting about stains on the carpet while the entire house is burning down around us.

  • Sat Jun 14, 2008 12:19 am Agree: 1   Disagree: 2

Homophobia (from Greek homós: one and the same; phóbos: fear, phobia) is a term used to describe irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuals. It can also mean "irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals".

  • Fri Jun 13, 2008 11:49 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 1

Biggie: It's funny how people immediately get on the defensive when truth is being spoken. Therefore, they begin to make "hasty generalizations" like bringing up Ted Haggard, and spout off like EVERY preacher who stands for truth has to be a "closet" homosexual himself. I don't believe this is homophobia as much as it is truth and doctrine. What if I was to spout off and say that everyone that makes hasty generalizations like Biggie, is probably gay and was hit by the first rock thrown at him, thus his squealing?

  • Fri Jun 13, 2008 11:14 pm Agree: 2   Disagree: 2

Dr. Richard Land's condemnations kinda remind me of Ted Haggard bashing the gays...

Why is it the most homophobic zealots are the ones who 5 years later end up outed by gay prostitutes and bad drug deals? Should Dr. Land say the 5th horseman is homophobic preachers who secretly are gay themselves??? Kinda fits....

  • Fri Jun 13, 2008 8:30 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

The anti-abortion and anti-gay message is seen by younger people as a narrow minded rant. In talking with our younger generation about matters of Faith, I always hit a brick wall when I say I am a Baptist. I'm afraid that is why our numbers are not increasing.

I think that we should try to regain the "kerygma" we see at work in the Book of Acts, and not kowtow to politicians who take our votes for granted by harping on "hot-button " issues.

Only in that way can we fulfill God's Great Commission. Just a thought.
