Study Finds World's Youth More Religious Than Believed

By Ethan Cole|Christian Post Reporter

The hundreds of thousands of religious youths who gathered in Sydney Tuesday for World Youth Day are not anomalies as commonly believed, but rather they exemplify their generation’s great interest in religion, a new study revealed.

The majority of teenagers and young adults in most parts of the world are religious, according to a massive 21-country study conducted by the German think-tank Bertelsmann Stiftung.

Worldwide, more than four out of five young adults (85 percent) are religious, and almost half (44 percent) are deeply religious. Only 13 percent say they are not interested in God or faith in general.

“The perception that young people are less religious than their parents and grandparents is typically Western European and does not correspond to the reality worldwide,” organizers of the study commented. “Young adults in developing countries and Islamic states are no less religious than other adults.”

In fact, eighty percent of all young Protestants outside of Europe were found to be deeply religious while only 18 percent of this group described themselves as simply religious. In stark contrast, just seven percent of young Protestants in Europe said they are deeply religious, while 25 percent say they are nominal members of their church.

Similar to the Protestant comparison, the number of deeply religious Catholics outside of Europe is drastically more (68 percent) than that within Europe (25 percent).

“The countries where the younger population is less concerned with religious faith are almost all in the Western cultural sphere extending from Australia to Spain,” the study’s organizers noted. “However, there are opposing trends here too.”

The United States is an exception among the Western industrialized countries. While relatively few young people in Europe pray daily – only nine percent in France, eight percent in Russia, and seven percent in Austria – more than a half of young Americans (57 percent) say they pray daily.

By comparison, ninety percent of young people in Nigeria and Guatemala pray at least once a day. Meanwhile, three out of four of the respondents in other devout countries such as India, Morocco and Turkey do likewise.

Dr. Martin Rieger, project leader of the Bertelsmann Stiftung's Religion Monitor concluded: "The assumption that religious belief is dwindling continuously from generation to generation is clearly refuted by our worldwide surveys – even in many industrialized nations."

Yeah, right on Wilderness, now you’re getting it, thanks for printing this good stuff! Yes, these are beautiful words of respect toward our mother! Memorize these words, meditate on them for a few minutes, use them daily when contemplating the faith and trust she had in God, the obedience she showed us, the special role God gave Her as part of His plan for our Salvation. Without Her saying yes to God, Jesus would not have been born. Where!d you find this good stuff? Keep it up! You're right, she is, for example the Mother of Christ, the Mother of the Church (His church, his mom, therefore..), Admirable Mother, Mother of our Savior, Arc of the New Covenant (she did carry Jesus the New Covenant), and so much more... beautiful words of endearment and respect, but none are words of worship.

This would be similar to me calling you Wilderness the gentleman, Wilderness the Scholar, Wilderness the fine judge of character, excellent mechanic, handy kinda guy, great bass player, handsome fellow, wonderful example of a family man, King of his household, head of his wife, someone to be admired, lover of Jesus, incredible athlete... In no way am I worshiping you through these words Wilderness, just giving you a few compliments.

May the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you!

Tallguy1000 said: "All generations shall call me blessed (Luke Ch 1). All generations shall call me blessed.....All generations shall call me blessed..." [End quote]

"And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women" (Luke 1:28).

With a careful reading, one will see that the angel said that Mary was blessed among women and not above women. It is one thing to say that Mary was blessed among women, it is quite another to call her...

Holy Mother of God, Holy Virgin of virgins, Mother of Christ, Mother of the Church, Mother of divine grace, Mother most pure, Mother most chaste, Mother inviolate, Mother undefiled, Mother most amiable, Mother admirable, Mother of good counsel, Mother of our Creator, Mother of our Saviour, Mother of mercy, Virgin most prudent, Virgin most venerable, Virgin most renowned, Virgin most powerful, Virgin most merciful, Virgin most faithful, Mirror of justice, Seat of wisdom, Cause of our joy, Spiritual vessel, Vessel of honour, Singular vessel of devotion, Mystical rose, Tower of David, Tower if ivory, House of gold, Ark of the covenant, Gate of heaven, Morning star, Health of the sick, Refuge of sinners, Comfort of the afflicted, Help of Christians, Queen of Angels, Queen of Patriarchs, Queen of Prophets, Queen of Apostles, Queen of Martyrs, Queen of Confessors, Queen of Virgins, Queen of all Saints, Queen conceived without original sin, Queen assumed into heaven, Queen of the most holy Rosary, Queen of families, Queen of peace.

Let's keep biblical Mary blessed AMONG women as the word of God said, and not ABOVE.

Well said wbmoore, and thanks! Yes, we will advance the Kingdom of Christ in a much better way when we all work together!

I know who you (people on this site) are in a sense, because I'd stepped out into the Evangelical world for a little while, and then about 7 years ago came back into the Catholic faith. Now I love it! I truly feel the fullness of Christ when I attend Catholic Mass! However, I thank the evangelicals because the taught me how to pray and they taught me much about the bible. I witnessed how they live 24/7 for Christ! Yet it is because of this knowing the bible better that I returned to the Catholic Mass. I realized that Mass is scriptural from start to finish, c/w the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist (John 6:51-71) & (Cor 11:24-30).

Jn 6:56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Jn 15:4 Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. Hey, I can't deny this, I'm just following what Jesus tells me to do from the way He instructed me to do it. John 6:56 is the only reference in the bible that instructs us as to how to remain in Him.

To this day many of my friends are Evangelical, Mennonite, Baptist, Pentecostal, and mainstream protestant. I attend some of their church's social events. I often have lunch with Pastors. I serve on ecumenism for my parish. Christ would have us as one! My best friend is Catholic and his wife is Baptist, and this seems to work out very well for them. She attends Catholic Mass with him, he attends Baptist service with her. They get a "double whammy" of church attendance on Sunday morning. And guess what; they both grow, and they both grow closer to Christ!

I've been on mission trips with other faiths where you people look at me and watch my example. Then after a couple of days the usual response after I tell them I'm Catholic is "You're Catholic?" They seem so surprised! Hey, I'm saved by Grace through Faith in Jesus Christ just like you are!

May God bless you and sanctify you....<><...
    Have a great weekend everyone!

    Ammon86,

I have to disagree with your position on Catholics being on Christian Post.

I know people who love God, are extremely dedicated to God, read Scripture, pray to God, love the church. Some of them are Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Baptists, Pentacostal, non-denominational.

I know some people who go to church and think that by meeting their daily/weekly check list of good deeds that they will get to heaven. They are mistaken, but its what they believe. Again, some are Catholic, some are Protestants.

I know people who go to church for the social aspect of it, and do not really believe in Christ having died for our sins. Again, some are Catholic, some are Protestant.

The Catholics I know are much like the Protestants I know.

I have known people I firmly believe to be saved in many different denominations, including Roman Catholic.

Some denominations put a high regard on church history, hierarchy and/or tradition and/or guidance. Some denominations put a high regard on the preisthood of the believer. Some denominations teach baptism by water is required for salvation. Some denominations teach baptism of infants is required. Some denominations baptism of the Holy Spirit must have evidence of speaking in tongues.

I have to agree with JC, "Take a look at the lampstands in the Book of Revelation. Only 3 of the 7 churches were in good standing, the other 4 had issues. Only one of those 4 was in danger of losing it's place in the lampstand. The one that had lost it's first love."

We must stand firm on Truth. I do not deny we should speak out against doctrine we believe to be wrong. I do it all the time. However, for me, its brothers in Christ disagreeing whether Mom said to eat cereal or corn flakes.

To me, what is most important is they worship the God of Abraham, accept that Christ was sent by God the Father to suffer and die for their sins and was resurrected on the third day. Everything else is secondary. It is God's job to fix the church. It is my job to preach the word of God, and as a preacher, I will have to answer for the answers I provide or do not provide. I will have to answer for the love and grace and forgiveness I showed others.

People of different denominations (and even within the same denomination) can work to help each other see a better interpretation of what God said. Sometimes I see things in a light I would never have seen it if I was to condemn automatically. Discussion helps us have a better understanding of what we believe and why so we can defend the truth.

Show some grace and love, brother. I am not saying unity at the expense of truth. Nor am I saying truth in expense of unity. Both are possible, without compromising either. Speak truth in love. Share common ground. Stand firm on truth. Love each other.

    To Ammon86:

Beloved, I humbly disagree with you. I think this is the perfect place for Tallguy1000 to come. Are we not suppose to be a light in the darnkess? If just a little leaven spoils the loaf, then what could a little of God's light in a person's life do?

Tallguy1000, in case you forgot, I remind you this is the ChristianPost, not the CatholicPost. This is a place for people who accept Jesus as the Head of the Church, not Pope. And this is a place for people who refer to Almighty God when talking about Holy Father, not to bishop of Rome. This site is not a place for blasphemy. If you search such, you have plenty of your Roman Catholic portals and forums.

I do not condemn anyone, But I must give the truth as presented in the Bible. That is not popular today, But I can't help that.

If what you or I believe cannot be found in the Word of God, Then we are wrong, God has given the Way of Salvation, It is through and by Faith in Jesus Christ and nothing else, Or anyone else.

Jesus did not say for one to get to heaven they must be religious, He said, " Except a man is born again he cannot see the kingdom of heaven.( John 3:3)

Unless those young people heard, and accepted the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and Him Crucified, They will be lost.

Religion will damn the soul. Christ and what He did on the Cross is the answer for our youth today.

Most catholics do not worship Christ as he is presented in the Bible, They worship Mary, Pray to mary, Mary cannot save your sould. Mary cannot answer one Prayer.

If your Faith is in anyone other than Christ and what He did on the Cross, You will be lost.

and may God help our youth to hear and understand the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I too was a condemner of Catholics. That is until God asked me who I was to dictate how people should worship. I was thinking on the surface, God was looking at the Heart.

God pointed out to me that some people worship this way, and some that way. He is not necessarily looking at how people worship, but why.

Are they doing so from habitual, repetitive motions. Or are they doing so because they want to get as close to Him as possible.

Take a look at the lampstands in the Book of Revelation. Only 3 of the 7 churches were in good standing, the other 4 had issues. Only one of those 4 was in danger of losing it's place in the lampstand. The one that had lost it's first love.

Look at Timothy, his mother was Jewish and his father was Greek. But he prayed to God, God honored that prayer, and his testimonies are now written in God's word. God looked at his heart.

Beloved, I am not Catholic, and I don't agree with some of their doctrine. But I do know that they worship Jesus as Savior and Lord. They believe.

    What does John 3:16 say?

Wilderness, stop it already! Quit being a Saul, quit persecuting God's people, the people of the Way (Acts)! As a christian you should be happy that hundred's of thoudands of youth are seeking after the Lord! Would you rather them be out doing drugs instead? I know that your heart is in the right place and you honestly want to "save" us, and honestly think that you are, but don't bother, don't worry. Just know that our salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Don't believe me? Find out what my pastor had to say about it! Google and read "Truth in Splendor".
How long has your church been around? 20 years maybe? Mine has been here, strong and steady for just over 2000 years now. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. "A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough. I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. So Wilderness, quit worrying about Catholics, instead focus on yourself, draw closer to Jesus, and go preach the Gospel to muslims and hindus, people who have never heard it, then you'll be my hero! Right now you don't really impress me! Leave Catholics alone, we're fine without you!
Otherwise, maybe you need to humble yourself and venerate that cross too once-in-a-while, because on that Old Rugged Cross hung your salvation! Maybe you need to humble yourself a little and respect Jesus's mom the way He intended you to when in the book of John the third last thing he told you to do was "Son behold your mother, mother behold your son". Wilderness, are you beholding your mother? All generations shall call me blessed (Luke Ch 1). All generations shall call me blessed.....All generations shall call me blessed....ALL gene... Wilderness, have you called her blessed today? If not, why not? This comes right out of Holy Scripture,..... ALL Generations shall call ME Blessed... Wilderness, be obedient and call your mom Blessed...AMEN!

    Youth Day Conversions Begin
Cross and Icon on Final Leg of Journey

"Hundreds of pilgrims followed the cross and icon [Our Lady] as they were carried by ferry from Manly to Circular Quay, then walked with the images as they cut through the center of Sydney's central business district down Pitt Street, past Sydney Tower and down to Belmore Park.

There, every pilgrim got a chance to venerate the cross and icon, and many, including some from Texas, were moved to tears and embraced each other as others prayed and sang around them." [End quote from Zenit.org]

Such deception. Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Repent, and come out from among them!
