Survey: Only 3 in 5 Christian Radio Listeners Tune In for Music

By Josh Kimball|Christian Post Reporter

More believers are tuning in to Christian radio for reasons other than music than some might think, according to a new survey.

While the most popular reason for tuning in to Christian radio was to listen to Christian music (56 percent), 40 percent of Christians say they tune in to listen to sermons and teaching, the Wilson Research Strategies survey found.

"There is a much higher demand for teaching programs than what the conventional wisdom might expect," commented Rick Dunham, president and CEO of Dunham+Company, which commissioned the survey.

Furthermore, those who are primarily driven to listen to Christian music are predominantly women aged 18-44 and are more likely to attend church less frequently, while those who tune in to Christian radio to listen to teaching/sermons tend to be older men and women and attend church more frequently.

"There is a distinct difference between those who tune into Christian radio to listen to music compared to those who want teaching,” Dunham noted in a news release. “I think it is safe to say that those who desire teaching content are in fact the more serious Christians who are definitely connected with their local church.”

Across the nation, an estimated 46 percent of Christian adults – representing more than 69 million people – tune in to Christian radio compared to the 91 percent of Christian adults who tune in to general radio.

According to the latest survey, nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of those who listen to Christian radio do so at least several times per week, with nearly one-third (29 percent) saying they tune in every day. That represents approximately 20 million people who listen to Christian radio each day.

Regarding the findings on those who tune into Christian radio for teaching/sermons, Dunham said it is “good news for Christian programmers.”

“This is … an important challenge to Christian radio station owners to understand the importance of the teaching program to Christian adults across America,” he added.

Other notable findings from the survey include the demographics of those who tune into Christian programming. Listeners were found to be predominantly women 45-54 years of age, frequent churchgoers, Pentecostal/Charismatic, residents of the South, politically conservative, and self-described activists.

Also, nearly 1 in 4 (23 percent) of those who say they don’t listen to Christian programming say they are not interested in listening to Christian content, and 1 in 5 (20 percent) say they prefer other content such as news and sports. Eleven percent say they prefer to get their Christian content elsewhere.

The sample surveyed for the Wilson Research Strategies’ study represents 72 percent of U.S. adult population – which is equal to roughly 150.5 million people – who call themselves Christians. Christians in this study were defined as people who believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that by believing He died for their sins have eternal life.

The survey of 1,000 Christian adults nationwide has a margin of error of ±3.1 percent at the 95 percent confidence level. The study was conducted by telephone May 27-29.

I love modern Christian music! One of my favorite memories from when I was a teen was singing "Our God is an Awesome God" with my friends in youth group. When I discovered 99.1, a Christian station that broadcasts in my area, I started listening to Christian music on a much more frequent basis - like in the car on my way to and from work. I think it is beneficial to listen to music with uplifting, Christian lyrics. I also love listening to the WOW cds and checking out Christian music videos on GodTube. I just think it is very important to filter out the negative, violent, obscene, immoral content that is found in a lot of music, television, movies and news today. I try to replace that type of entertainment with stuff that is more positive and Christian. (Hence why I listen to Christian music or come to this site to read the news.) I'll also sometimes listen to the preachers on Christian radio; my favorite is Albert Mohler's program on XM - excellent and highly recommended!!

I am not sure what points are made about tuning into Christian radio for the "music" as opposed to the "teaching" aspects of Christian radio. It makes it sound like the music is so much fluff while the teaching is the real meat. The largest book of the Bible is, after all, Psalms, an immense collection of songs of worship, and great foundations for the daily life of Christians. Without the music, much teaching is bland.
This last year, I "spiced" up my morning devotions with a weekly "Make a Joyful Noise" session where I presented a Bible lesson reinforced with a Christian music video (Thanks in part to CP's Media section). I find that my droning is better served with such visual reminders, presenting the wondrous forgiveness through Audio Adrenaline's "Ocean Floor," the faithful endurance of seeing beyond this world's pains to a better life in heaven in Natalie Grant's "In Better Hands," the joy of Christian living in Needtobreath's "Signature of the Divine," the need to practice Christian love in Stellar Kart's "Me and Jesus." Teachers know the advantages of such show-and-tell, or in this case, tell-and-show.
Both music and teaching have their points of value. But somehow, a careful listening of whatever Casting Crowns is singing about just makes more of an impact on me.

Up here in Canada I listen to UCB radio-a christian station. I listen 90% of the time to the preaching, they have some great pastor's radio ministries which include Charles Stanley, Chuck Swindoll, James McDonald,Ravi PZacharriah, etc. All of these pastors preach a solid biblical need for salvation through the finished works of CHRIST,prior to this my area had no christian radio.I greatly appreciate and am blessed that GOD enabled this station to come to my area-it has increased my faith and knowledge of the LORD by listening. The music most of the time is ok, but I personally prefer the old hymes we sing in my church over modern christian music.Praise be to our LORD & MASTER JESUS CHRIST.

“This is … an important challenge to Christian radio station owners to understand the importance of the teaching program to Christian adults across America,” he added."

I really don't understand this comment, or what this survey is really trying to say.

Christian radio stations fully understand that more preaching/teaching programming means more guarenteed income.

The dollar is coming in and the real ministry is being lost.

The fact is that, secular or Christian, online music streaming and the MP3 player are now providing the music listener with the content they really want to hear.

Radio stations need to learn how to listen to their audience. Yahoo Music did.
