Atheist: Am I On the Wrong Road?

Q: I've always said I'm an atheist, and I am. But down inside, I'm beginning to wonder if I'm on the wrong road (although I'd never admit it to anyone). What would you say to someone like me? Don't just tell me to have faith, because I don't have any. - M.McN.

A: I firmly believe that the main reason you're questioning your present attitude is because God is at work in your heart, trying to show you the futility of your disbelief and pointing you to a better way. I pray you won't try to silence His voice!

And why is God doing this to you? It isn't because He's just trying to win an argument with you and convince you that He is right and you are wrong. He is creating these feelings in you for one reason: He loves you and wants you to discover the joy and peace that come only from knowing Him. If He didn't care about you He wouldn't bother with you - but He does care, and He is pursuing you and seeking to draw you to Himself. The Bible says, "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness" (Jeremiah 31:3).

How can you know not only that God exists, but also that He loves you? Look at Jesus Christ as He is found in the pages of the New Testament - for He was God in human flesh. Not only that, He gave His life for you, and He rose again to give you eternal life.

The greatest truth any person can ever discover is that God loves them and has opened the way for them to be with Him in heaven forever. Don't let your pride, or anything else, keep you from turning to Christ and putting your faith and trust in Him.

    Christ said, "My God, my God, why have you foresaken me." Actually, to have no faith in eternal life is a means of achieving solidarity with the suffering, crucified Christ. For me, that's enough. Believing in God in order to have eternal life seems awfully selfish and seems to make Christianity a "quid pro quo" religion.
    Do I believe there is life after death?
    I don't know!
    I guess you could say I'm a Christian Agnostic.

    Why would someone write such a letter to someone as one-noted and biased as Mr. Graham? Either the letter writer wanted to hear a specific answer or Mr. Graham concocted the letter to further his agenda. I suspect the latter.

    Still questioning is good. One should always question their motives. As a non-believer, I do good/moral/ethical things because they are the right thing to do. I endeavor to do the right things for the right reasons. Religion, too often, is about doing the right things for the wrong reasons and [tragically] about doing the wrong things for the right reasons.

    I just wanted write to encourage the person who wrote this question that it is all right to question what you believe. I have been a Christian since I was very young, but there were times I had my doubts about what I believed. I wasn’t sure how I could know that the Bible was true. So, I really had to search it out and really see that the evidence points to the fact that the Bible is true. So, I believe it is ok to have doubts and to ask the tough questions and to sincerely seek out the truth because if God is who He says He is then we will find that He is true and He will help us find the truth. You may want to look into other great thinkers in the past who were atheists before they became Christians, such as Francis Schaeffer or C. S. Lewis. Keep seeking the truth.
