Katy Perry’s Christian Parents Shocked by 'Shameful' Hit Single

By Anne Thomas|Christian Today Reporter

The evangelical Christian parents of U.S. chart topper Katy Perry have lashed out against the lyrics of their daughter’s No. 1 hit single "I Kissed A Girl."

Her parents are outraged by the song’s provocative lyrics, which include “I kissed a girl and I liked it.”

Perry’s mother, Mary Hudson, says she is disappointed at the career path her daughter has decided to go down.

"I hate the song,” she said, according to the Daily Record. “It clearly promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting. Katy knows how I feel. We are a very outspoken family."

"I can't even listen to that song," the mother added. "The first time I heard it I was in total shock. When it comes on the radio I bow my head and pray.”

The 23-year-old former gospel singer’s track continues to soar to the top of music charts around the world.

"Katy is our daughter and we love her but we strongly disagree with how she is conducting herself at the moment," Mary Hudson said.

“We cannot cut her out of our lives as she is our child - but she knows we disagree strongly with what she is doing and the message she is promoting regarding homosexuality which the Bible clearly states is a sin.

"But the Bible also promotes understanding and forgiveness, which I keep reminding myself."

Hudson said, meanwhile, that Perry’s father has “had words” with her over her skimpy 50s-inspired outfits.

"Some are too revealing and her father has had words with her about it. Like any child she is going through a period of rebellion."

Perry, who has adopted her mother’s maiden name for the stage, used to sing for God in church and even released her own Christian pop album as Katy Hudson in 2001, which included the track “Faith Won’t Fail.” The record made it on to Christian Music Today’s best albums list that year.

But she was spotted by a music producer who invited her to LA, according to her mother, and "that’s when she started to change,” Mary Hudson said.

"I was worried she’d start doing drugs and drinking alcohol. I still am. I spoke to her only recently. She said, 'Oh Mum, I’m not going to turn into Amy Winehouse.’"

this kind of stuff does not shock me in the least. when there is a famine of the Word of God, you can rest assure that sin will prevail. I have seen so much filth in 'the church' that I just laugh at times. But then I think of all the so called 'christians' that are far from God with their hearts. then I cry.

    jjdiogenes,
"If Katy's mom were a true christian, she would keep her mouth shut as the bible is clear that women are to remain silent in church."

If you were a true Christian, you'd realize she was speaking outside of church.

muggle, unfortunately that's all too true and although I have not seen the video, nor do I plan to, but I can't help but believe it too focuses on that same premise with regards to male viewers.

As an experienced debaucherous pig, I should point out that many many MANY straight men find (or have found) girls who like to "experiement" enticing.

So I have to wonder, if this were Justin Timberlake singing "I kissed a guy and I liked it", how loud would the flushing sound of his career be?

For all of us who call a sin, a sin, we still went and watched the video.

    Just couldn't resist.

For the audience the song is intended for, nice video.
For the audience the song is not intended for, not so nice video.

ok, so I had to watch the video, at first it didn't ring a bell and then I realized I had heard that before, a part of it and turned it off! That video is a prime example of what is wrong in the world today, well one of the many things...... I think that most kids find it to be a game, one that they think is easy to just walk away from, all on their own. What a cunning and dangerous trap for the unsuspecting and a "christian" portraying all this too! Nothing is shocking anymore though. I will pray for this family and the younger generations coming up, they have a to overcome!
This video is a gateway, it condones that which is sin and makes it lighthearted. This is no laughing matter and I feel for her parents.

feet, it's called teen-age rebellion, when I was a teen it was reported that a song by the Kingsmen called Louie, Louie (I'm not sure of the spelling) talked about having sex and everybody I knew either bought a copy of it or was listening really close to hear the dirty parts which I am not sure even existed. We were also told you could get high by smoking banana peels and I know a lot of teens who tried that to. The popularity of this song has very little to do with the acceptance of a lifestyle, but much more to do with teen-age rebellion.

Yes, feet, we know you agree with the world. Let me know how that works out for you, though!

Amy Winehouse is an English singer with a beautiful voice and a train wreck of a life. I had never heard of her before she started getting arrested weekly. She is very "worldly".

    wikipedia

Others, such as Chicago Sun-Times columnist Dr. Laura Berman, find the lyrics positive, arguing that "the fact that this song (I Kissed a Girl) is sparking so much interest suggests that our society is beginning to accept that there isn't always one box (gay or straight) for people to check."[

    i totally agree.

Okay, I'll bite who is Amy Winehouse?

So I guese most everyone who is reading this article, and the blog, will race to hear the song and watch the video so we can all be our own critics.

The singer is 23 now. An adult. The parents felt they needed to go public and air out the dirty sheets.

Hollywood always says that controversy is good for ratings. So let it be.

As the parent of a teenage daughter, my heart goes out to the parents. I hope their daughter sees the error of her ways and is no longer seduced by the morally and spiritually corrupt people and environment she is in currently. As I read the article I saw the following:

"...but she knows we disagree strongly with what she is doing and the message she is promoting regarding homosexuality which the Bible clearly states is a sin.

"But the Bible also promotes understanding and forgiveness, which I keep reminding myself."

What they say is absolutely true, but they/we should not forget that forgiveness and understanding is always preceded first by repentance.

I greatly despise this song, It's just one more tasteless peice of audio garbage that's ruining today's youth. Im 22 and I would like to ask that you older folks pray for my generation. We really need it, Im thankful that I managed to get the blinders removed from my eyes but there are so many that refuse to acknowlege the state that our younger society is in, and a lot of older adults dont really know how Godless and reckless kids are becoming these days. Please pray for the youth, we really need it.

I often wonderif they are shocked for the child, or how it makes them look. I hope that we can be shocked at what is happening to all our children, not just a pastor's child. My goodness. Where is the true burden. In shock or in people traviling before the Lord for these young people.

I don't know much about Amy Winehouse, but I just watched this video on youtube and it was a complete flesh extravaganza. This girl gives "crossover" a whole new meaning. Of course the video's whole lesbian theme is neutralized by her waking up in bed with a guy. It was only a dream! </sarcasm>. Really, this is one alarming piece of rubbish. I can understand her parents hurt and anger.

  • Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:14 pm Agree: 2   Disagree: 0

I understand these parents feelings and I am praying for them and their daughter. satan is doing everything to turn young people away from Christ. May God strengthen this family.

When you are measuring yourself according to Amy Winehouse, instead of Jesus Christ, then you know you have fallen far from God. This is a classic secularist position -- pick a low, depraved standard and justify yourself by saying, "Well, I'm at least not that bad."
