Revival Evangelist Todd Bentley Separates from Wife

By Anne Thomas|Christian Today Reporter

The evangelist at the center of contentious revival meetings in Lakeland, Fla., has filed for separation from his wife.

Todd Bentley has also taken the decision to step down from the leadership of his organization, Fresh Fire Ministries, which stated on its website that the evangelist had “entered into an unhealthy relationship on an emotional level with a female member of his staff."

"On behalf of the Fresh Fire leadership and the Board of Directors, we wish to apologize to our friends and partners and to the larger body of Christ and to ask for your forgiveness," the statement said.

The heavily tattooed evangelist courted controversy in recent months as videos began circulating on the Internet, apparently showing Bentley at raucous revival meetings using violence to heal sick people in the audience and shove people to the ground while shouting "Bam."

Critics have also questioned his claims of miraculous healing and raising people from the dead.

"What is plain is that he is teaching false doctrine and that the claims to his ministry's 'successes' seem pretty spurious," Chad Brand, professor of Christian theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, told Baptist Press.

Stephen Strang, the publisher of Pentecostal magazine Charisma, wrote in a column last week, “Anyone who baptizes people in the name of the Father, the Son 'and BAM' is playing lightly with the Holy Spirit and is bordering on blasphemy."

Bentley and his wife, Shonnah, were in counseling for the last three years before their decision to separate. The Fresh Fire statement said that Bentley would “refrain from all public ministry for a season to receive counsel in his personal life."

When we read the Bible we see that God works through imperfect people including me. I do believe that Christian Leaders involved in Ministry should be accountable to a group of elders and to the people they serve. If a leader falls there must be a healthy period of time for repentance and restoration before they can be trusted again in a ministry. Remember even Moses died and wasn't allowed to cross into the promised land with his people due to an anger problem. But we also must remember not to judge others because we judge ourselves at the same time.

isn't that what pastors / televangelist & christians would do. you speak as if christians or pastors are perfect. the gospel that the pastors / televangelist / christians preach is 'you failed to do this, you failed to do that' '...you lack faith' bec of sin! now when he sins are exposed you get defensive. christians are hypocrites, they are good to show off, trying to look good for jesus!

Mr. Bentley would benefit from psychiatric care, including a trial of Abilify to assist with the impact of his abusive childhood on his mental stability.

MaryG: Your comment, " I am so glad he's gone." makes me wonder: how much have you prayed for Todd Bentley?
Apparently the parable of the prodigal son is not in your Bible. Nor Galatians 6:1 “Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out.”
    (Galatians 6:1 MESSAGE)

You said: 'I don't care how many people he won to Christ, truth is truth, but if he is so messed up in his personal faith, how can he direct others to correct Biblical faith?'.....C'mon now! He HAS won thousands to the Lord all over the world. He has some issues he needs to address in his own personal life for sure. But don't damn him to hell because he made some bloopers. The man's personaolity is, someone said, kind of like a rhinoceros on speed, haha.

I love David Wilkerson, but I have to disagree some with him. It was posted that he said "Whole groups of bodies jerking out of control, falling on the floor, laughing hysterically, staggering around like drunkards, writhing like snakes, howling like wild animals. We have evangelists that stand and blow on people to knock them down, as if the breath of the Holy Ghost is now incarnated him...and says that is the 'hand of the Lord.'"

I agree that we should test the spirit to make sure it's of God. But I have some experiences that would have fallen into one or more of these catagories.
I have had a spirit of laughter fall upon me. Twice. I did not seek it, nor did I have any preconceived idea about it. Both times they coincided with a deliverance that was occuring within me. David in the old testament danced before the Lord. I'm sure he did it in the spirit. People today dance in the spirit. It is their way of expressing the joy of God in their heart. I've never had that. I have laughter. That is how I expressed His joy manifested in my life.
I've been "drunk" in the Spirit. Simply put, it is just a light headedness brought on from something God is doing.
I've been "slain" in the spirit. I've had evangelists put their hands on me, and I felt a power so strong that it knocked me down. I do not deny His power. I even seen a lady who was "slain" in the spirit fall back. There was a wooden pew behind her. Her head passed through the pew. It didn't break the pew, it passed through as though it didn't exist.
I do agree that writhing around and howling might be a little over the top. Much of that is "induced" by the evangelist telling them that this is what will happen, instead of letting God move how He will.
As far as blowing on people...well, Jesus spit in a guys eyes once. I'm sure that would not be considered "appropriate" today.
I have been at meetings where the evangelist said that he was going to put his hands on people and told them what they would experience. Uh uh.
That is putting ideas in people's heads as to how they should respond.
A true man of God will simply do what God told them to do, without trying to persuade the outcome. They won't say "I'm gonna blow on you and the Spirit of God will come over you."

It's my observation that ALL human beings have something to hide!
We are all sinners - even the ones who are quick to point an accusing finger at someone else - and such accusers are only disciples of Satan - the Chief Accuser.
Such accusers are far more clever than the accused in hiding their own sins.
Only the Perfect should 'throw stones'!!!!!
I am a follower of Jesus Christ and have a deep desire to become more and more like Christ - but I find myself like Paul in the Bible "doing things I don't want to do or not doing things I want to do".
When I sincerely confess my sins He is faithful and just to forgive my sins!!
Only Christ in us makes us stand totally righteous before God our Father.
I love Todd Bentley and all those accused - because the work that God has started in them (and in me) HE WILL COMPLETE in due course - even if we seem imperfect for a while!!

He claimed on Youtube that he also kicked an older woman in the face with his combat boot. Doesn't that grieve the Holy Spirit within you? Can you imagine Jesus doing that? What kind of example does it set for new ministers and evangelists? I am so glad he's gone.

kt, excellent post from David Wilkerson, I do not consider myself a charismatic, but I have a high regard for him. The other thing about could people really have come to know Christ through his ministry. I believe as long as the true plan of salvation is being presented the messenger is irrelevant, because if you think about it an unsaved person can properly present the plan of salvation, at issue is the message not the messenger, so the question is was the true plan of salvation presented? If the answer is yes then I believe people could have been genuinely saved as a result of him presenting the plan of salvation.

msnchris70 - I agree with you that Todd Bentley is not holy but neither were the Pharisees in Jesus' day and they prayed many hours a day, they tithed, they gave alms, they read scripture everyday, they prayed the scriptures. Works is not proof positive of a person being holy. People who call themselves Christians can do all you mention and still their heart be far from God.

  • Fri Aug 22, 2008 12:15 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 2

Beware of charismatic preachers who are not Holy.

Judge your preacher first by his level of holiness. Does he pray many hours a day, does he tithe, does he give alms, does he read scripture everyday, does he pray the scriptures? If he looks like the devil and acts like the devil, then he is an agent of the devil. If he lives a holy life, and is always in God's will then he is a man of God.

This man is of another type of spirit and it isn't holy.

Words of wisdom from Pastor David Wilkerson, founding pastor of Times Square Church in NYC.

"Sad to say, there is so little discernment left in the church among so many pastors and even church leaders. They don't even know when the Holy Ghost is being misrepresented or blasphemed. There are thousands of Christians that go to crusades and they see things that they think is the Holy Ghost and they don't even know what they are sitting under. They are clapping and praising God while a man stands up there blaspheming and misrepresenting the Holy Ghost and they don't even know it.

"Folks, what we are seeing today in what is called so many revivals and things that are happening attributed to the Holy Ghost can not be found in the Scripture. Anything that can not be found in this Book has to be rejected outright. Totally rejected!

"I weep when I see these videos that are sent to me from all over the country. Whole groups of bodies jerking out of control, falling on the floor, laughing hysterically, staggering around like drunkards, writhing like snakes, howling like wild animals. We have evangelists that stand and blow on people to knock them down, as if the breath of the Holy Ghost is now incarnated him...and says that is the 'hand of the Lord.'"

"Folks, if it is not in this Book, you must stand up against it."

farout63 -- I agree! In addition to that, could he really have won any people to Christ if he was being used more by the devil? Furthermore, it's a disgrace to call his sin, "an unhealthy relationship on an emotional level with a female" when it is clearly adultery. I am not rejoicing over this at all either since I've been opposed to what went on in Lakeland from the beginning. Todd is not a true teacher of the Bible, nor a prophetic minister. He's used his own theology or a theology that is contrary to the Scriptures.

  • Fri Aug 22, 2008 4:42 am Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

I won't venture to judge Todd's heart. It's not my place. But I've been around since Jimmy Swaggart fell, and Jim Bakker fell, and Mario Murillo fell, and Larry Lea fell....you get my point...so I understand that Christian "personalities" are bound to fall eventually. It's against the nature of the Kingdom. Jesus blesses the anonymous.

I am amazed that so many posts here seem to think this was a man of God! This is a false prophet and teacher of the devil. Satan comes as an angel of light, and he is a liar, so is this phoney.
We sure better be able to judge this man as a false teacher or our own teaching and learning was not Biblically based. If a man can not keep a covenant with his wife, than what makes us think he is doing any better with Jesus Christ?
I don't care how many people he won to Christ, truth is truth, but if he is so messed up in his personal faith, how can he direct others to correct Biblical faith?
Wake up Christians, as satan is lurking to deceive many. This mans works were not of our God that we can be sure of!

I read the tooth that got knocked out either was not a real tooth, or needed to come out anyway! No one got hurt to my knowledge. I would not do that though! Also Todd is not a teacher, he is mainly an evangelist. I know many very good Bible teachers and preachers who said they never heard Todd teach heresy. If you are judging the supernatural things that happened, there is a true for every counterfeit. How do you know it was not real anyway? You cannot know. The Bible is full of supernatural experiences and God did not stop doing them.

Many believers around the world were greatly excited to
read about the revival in Lakeland, and now they all got
of dose of disappointmen and disbelief. How far we can
blame the devil for all the counterfeits, and give a
blank sheet of excuses for their moral failures! First
of all, these mushroom spiritual gymnasts from various
corners must be thoroughly checked before the believers
gather around them like the thirsty animals around a
    mirage.

The Bible commands us to judge teachers and what they teach. It also says to flee from them. It is all over the Bible. It amazes me how people will dismiss this issue and only deal with his marriage problems. Jesus said when asked about what were the signs of the end times. His first answer was to tell them to not let anyone deceive you. As sincere as Todd Bentley was he was dealing with dangerous supernatural experiences that anyone that knows the Bible could discern in a heartbeat.

I'm grateful for those that have received Christ and have received their healings through his services. That does not show that God approves the man's teachings.

I have prayed for him off and on during the meetings. The sad thing is that many people that have gotten into the weird supernatural garbage that he entertained unawares ended up with marriage problems, adultery, panic attacks and other emotional disorders.

Todd is at a point where he can turn around if he repents of anything that the Lord shows him that needs to change. He is not a piece of trash to be tossed out. At the same time there are grave issues that need to be addressed. I'm glad the board sat him down for a time. He needs the time to regroup. My prayer is that he will understand God's love for him in a new way.

BTW there was one person that he kicked to receive their healing that had a tooth knocked out.

I cannot say that I know his heart. But, I can see by the way he carries himself and the name of the Lord as a young man who needs to be humble, or in the extreme case, needs to be/has been humbled by the Father. Humility in service speaks louder than any human voice that can shout "BAM"! I have had the opportunity to see him many times, and I from my understanding of scripture, all I know and see of God is that He can use any method to draw men unto Himself. If God has chosen to use him in the past, who am I to say that God can't/won't use him in the future. I pray that he bathes himself in the scripture and prayer. He has alot of accountability to speak for with the amount sermons/teachings he has reached. God saves one way, but uses many different means. May God humble him and cause him to see who he is not, and Who God is!
    Blessings.

Let's not get too quick to label and judge Todd. He certainly has issues, as do we all. He also poured his life out on the mission field in Africa and other places and won thousands to Christ, as well as thousands of recorded authentic healings through the power of God. He is a gifted young man who needs to address some serious character issues. But he does love God. You should have seen what he was like BEFORE he became a Christian, oh my we won't go there. In comparison, he is an angel now. One thing for sure, he is VERY gifted no matter what wierdness he fell into in recent years. I understand that the ones who seemed to be hit with the boot were not injured, and that is miraculous in itself. It is better to pray for someone and to wish them healing than to ostracize and judge them. This is a test of your heart as well, see that you do not fall into the same thing as what you judge. Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery, Woman where are your accusers? Neither do I accuse you, now go and sin no more. Why do you suppose she was able to "go and sin no more?" Because she received and experienced the healing love and forgiveness of Jesus. We should desire to extend this same forgiveness and pray for Todd and his wife and family.

... and let's not forget the story he tells about God telling him to kick an old lady (who was praying by the stage) in the face with his boot in order to see miracles happen!

(Of course, where I come from, that's not called a 'miracle,' it's called Assault and Battery.)
