The nation's largest greeting card company is rolling out same-sex wedding cards - featuring two tuxedos, overlapping hearts or intertwined flowers, with best wishes inside. "Two hearts. One promise," one says.
Hallmark added the cards after California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal gay "marriage." A handful of other states have recognized same-sex civil unions.
The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark says the move is a response to consumer demand, not any political pressure.
"It's our goal to be as relevant as possible to as many people as we can," Hallmark spokeswoman Sarah Gronberg Kolell said.
Hallmark's largest competitor, American Greetings Corp., has no plans to enter the market, saying its current offerings are general enough to speak to a lot of different relationships.
Hallmark started offering "coming out" cards last year, and the four designs of same-sex "marriage" cards are being gradually released this summer and will be widely available by next year. No sales figures were available yet.
"When I have shopped for situations like babies or weddings for gay friends I have good luck in quirky stores," said Kathryn Hamm, president of the Web site gayweddings.com.
"But if you are just in a generic store ... the bride and groom symbol or words are in most cards," she said. "It becomes difficult to find some that are neutral but have some style."
The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law estimates that more than 85,000 same-sex couples in the United States have entered into a legal relationship since 1997, when Hawaii started offering some legal benefits to same-sex partners.
It estimates nearly 120,000 more couples will marry in California during the next three years - and that means millions of potential dollars for all sorts of wedding-industry businesses.
Hallmark, known more for its Midwest mores than progressive greetings, has added a wider variety lately. It now offers cards for difficulty getting pregnant or going through rehab.
It pulled a controversial card that featured the word "queer" in the punch line after it was criticized by some customers and gay magazine The Advocate last year. At any given time, Hallmark has 200 different wedding cards on the market, including some catering to interracial or inter-religious marriages and blended families.
The Greeting Card Association, a trade group, says it does not track how many companies provide same-sex cards but believes the number is expanding.
"The fact that you have someone like Hallmark going into that niche shows it's growing and signals a trend," said Barbara Miller, a spokeswoman for the association.
Rob Fortier, an independent card maker who runs his company, Paper Words, out of New York, added same-sex wedding cards to his mix after thinking about what he would want to receive.
"A lot of people think a gay greeting card needs a rainbow on it," Fortier said. "I don't want that."
But for some time, it was difficult to even find the words for what anyone wanted to say, he said.
His first card poked fun at the challenge. On the outside it featured lines that had been scratched out: "Congratulations on being committed!", "Congratulations on being unionized!" and, finally, "Congratulations on being domestically partnered!" The inside wished the couple congratulations on choosing to be together forever.
"It really comes down to language," he said.
John Stark, one of the three founders of Three Way Design in Boston, which makes gay-themed cards for occasions from adoption to weddings, has several new designs sketched out and ready.
But he has hesitated adding more wedding cards to his mix until after the November election, when California voters will decide a constitutional amendment that would again limit marriage to a man and a woman in the state.
"What is scary is to produce a marriage line and then November comes and it's recalled, then we have thousands of dollars of inventory waiting," he said.
The gay-friendly business can be challenging, companies said.
Hamm said although she has found many vendors willing to work with her company, some have asked to be removed from the Web site because of hate mail or some other backlash.
Hallmark says all of its stores can choose whether they want to add the latest offerings.

how comforting to know that everyone who is a christian could not have done wrong and that everyone who is not a christian has done wrong simply because they can be grouped into a class or an identity. that is precisely how your fellow christians murdered hundreds of millions of your fellow humans. christians have killed a significant percentage of the people who have ever lived on this planet. for just a small starter there are 30 million dead from the 30 years war in germany. even to this day, there are villages that stand an empty witness to the hate of the faith.

It's nothing but a 4000 year old family feud.
I have seen the argument many times that Christian have instigated many wars and killed many people when the fact of the matter is those people were not Christians. Many times there are the cases where people who have ambition for power use the church for their gain. Yet that does not make them Christian. The medici family in Italy hijacked the Catholic church in order to make their family richer. The french monarch use to use the church as a puppet to get what they wanted, and the pope that started the crusades was in fact trying to protect his own butt. There is a reason why there is a separation of church and state. Not to prevent the church from using the state for its own gains but so that the state does not use the church for its own gains. Using the authority of God is a very powerful tool but if misused can cause horrendous atrocities. In the case of the people who did try to lead the church astray Jesus put it best when he said it is better to tie a rock around their neck and drown than to face the judgement of God.

It was pretty impressive. It gave accounts of what the motivation behind each war was, and demonstrated that a minority percentage was religiously motivated ... out of which, most were instagated by Islam.
I let myself get dragged into a "why daddy" tangent discussion (lol) and need to go take care of my family and get back to the original relevant discussion.

Jesus said that not all those who say "Lord, Lord" shall enter the kingdom of heaven. There are many "Christians" who have done horrible things in the name of Christ. However, I don't know of any Christians that have done any of the things you are claiming.
Don't confuse the religion of Christianity with being a Christian. They are not the same.

We hear about the governments of N. Korea & China, built upon atheistic ideologies persecuting people of all religions.

I believe that many Christians have had to kill others to defend themselves. I believe that Christians are sinners like everyone else. I also believe that many people have usurped the name of Christianity to justify their actions, or have coincidentally commit atrocities without regard to religion or faith.
So to answer your question literally ... no.

Mike, You are right when you say you have to make a choice to sin. God created man but he gave man free will. That free will is the choice of putting God at the center of your life or putting your own desires and wants at the center of your life. Yet because someone is born a certain way does not eliminate what God seeks from them. In the new testament Jesus heals a blind man and says to his disciples that he was not born the way he was because of sin but so that God may reveal his Glory. Now blindness and sexual orientation are not the same thing but the point I get at is each of us are born differently and with different flaws. Each of us have our strengths and weaknesses but as paul noted a christian uses their weaknesses to glorify God. What God looks for the most is for us to completely rely on him. To follow him with absolute obedience. If you really look at the bible obedience is such a strong theme through out the bible that you can find it in every book of the bible. In the old testament God sought obedience from his people through the law while in the new testament he seeks it through love. If you love your father you listen because you know that he has the best intentions for you. So out of love we follow the father even at the expense of something we may want. That is a very scary concept to many and also the reason why it can be difficult to retain your faith in the Lord. Some might rationalize that how can I put myself in a position where I could be helpless or find myself losing more then I would gain. The problem with that argument is then you really don't believe in God. Being a Christian requires us to take the narrow gate and to sometimes be required to go against the current. Some face a stronger current than others. Each man is different in their walk of faith but each brother in Christ shares the common bond that they wish to carry the cross because of what Christ did for them. The word clearly shows that God would never turn his back on us. So going on what the word says we make the leap of faith to surrender ourselves completely. So to get back to what I was saying. If someone is born with a "gene" that causes them to be attracted to someone of the same sex how much Glory do you believe God would receive if you were able to overcome that urge. The thing about true love is that it means dedication and serving even when you might be in total disagreement with one another. When we love our parents we listen to them even when we think it is unfair. Jesus said that the most important commandment is to love thy father with all your heart. So that leaves you with a choice in the end regardless of the way you are born. Do you place the father first in your life or your partner. And who do you think would be the right choice if you were Christian.

So therefore if you choose to practice them you are choosing to sin. Plus what wb was saying is that each of us is born with a sinful nature and as a result we have a bent toward sin. And as he shared you don't have to teach a child to be selfish because they have a natural bent to it already.

I have children of my own. I have also had child development classes. While some children might learn these behaviora from others, other children need no such socialization to begin. Ask any parent who pays attention, most children manipulate from the very beginning. Children learn with no help from others how to manipulate and lie to get what they want.
If God called it sin, then It is sin. You might not like it. You might not want to agree. This does not change the fact that homosexual desire and sex are sins according to God.
Whether to engage in any behavior is a choice. Even whether to think thoughts of a particular nature (lust, anger, fear) is a choice.
No child born with crack cocaine addiction chooses to be that way. No loving adult would allow that child to remain in that condition - they will try to help the child heal from it. And after the child is healed, he will always have a propensity towards addiction of that nature. This does not mean it is not a sin for that child to get messed up on crack when he becomes an adult.

believer, I agree with you. Regardless of how people end up with a sin preference, they have the responsibility to not indulge it.
There are plenty of people claim to be "wired that way" (some claim genes, others environment) and end up having to learn to not engage in their sin of choice. Sometimes they are delivered from the desire, other times they are not. But God calls some of the things they do sin, and regardless of whether they are delivered from it or not.
Children seem born knowing how to lie, deceive, and steal. Yet even though its natural to them, we tell them they have to control themselves and not do lie, be honest, do not steal. This is what Scripture tells us:
Leviticus 19:11 Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not deceive one another.
It matters not whether anyone is born with a particular leaning towards a particular sin. God can remove it from us, but even if He does not, we have the responsibility to not sin and to teach others to not sin.
wb, I also agree that even if they were to discover that homosexuality if genetically predetermined that it would either be the result of Satan's handiwork or more logically a genetic malfunction since people get upset if I say mutation as a result of man's sinful nature which means it occurred since the fall of Adam and Eve.
Mike2685, as I've said on several occasions there is no valid scientific data to support the claim that a person is born homosexual with no choice in the matter. Based on that at this point and time we must assume it is a matter of choice. My sense is if they do find a genetic link it will be a matter of persuasion which means the person still has to make a choice to move to that persuasion.
People who say they are born "that way" are the one's making the excuse. The only time that is a viable arguement is when you are talking about a disability. Even those can be overcome. The pro-gay camp says they are born that way so it makes it OK. The Bible as written camp says it's sin.
To be honest, Christianity isn't based on how you were born. It is based on being born again. All things are become new. If the Bible says homosexuality is wrong then a born again person is born out of being gay into being conformed to the image of Jesus. It doesn't matter if it's drugs, alchohol, adultry, fornication, homosexuality, lying, stealing or whatever. The old things are to pass away and all things have become new.
There's no reason satan could not have warped a homosexual's development, either in the womb or outside it. There's no reason someone could not be homosexual just so that the work of God would be shown in their life by healing them from it - but there must be faith.

If I was born gay, then it would follow God created me gay, then it would follow God simply must have contradicted himself because he calls homosexuality a sin, yet God can't create sin, so your whole argument would fall in on itself. dongard, many Christians do empathize with homosexuals because like them we had to make a choice in order to become a Christian and homosexuals have to make a choice to become a homosexual. But the diference is this, it is God's desire for as many as would to become a child of God whereas He does not desire that any should choose a lifestyle that leads to sinful practices such as the sexual practices of homosexuality. Where we can fall short as Christians is if we don't allow people who are caught up in either sin or a sinful lifestyle to know that God has a remedy and that is provided through a person repenting of their sin and turning to God through the person and finished work of His Son, Jesus Christ alone. For in Christ alone will a person find the ability to resist the devil and flee from temptation and the sin that temptation leads to. christians often(always) complain that they are non taken seriously, worse are hated, and treated unfairly for witnessing their beliefs. which are entirely a lifestyle choice. no one with out exception is born a christian. nor is christianity a core part of humanity. even by their own most rigorous definition christianity is a newcomer on the scene(less than 1/3 of history)
so one might think that these believers would have some natural empathy for others who experience the same condition. but no. with a few and very exceptional situations, christians have embraced power and repression and cursed, even killed, anyone who dared challenge their addiction to the power of the state.
this long introduction is my way of saying that when certain good christians compare or call homosexuals drug addicts, murderers, terrorists, drunken sex addicts, rapists, evil child molesters, and more and more, they are standing on a very narrow ledge. one that other equally good christians (who are you to judge their righteousness as less than yours.) have used to murder and destroy a far number of all the humans who have ever existed on this planet.

Any church, seminary, or Bible college that does not hold to the Bible being the word of God, the Scripture, is in danger of loosing its lamp - if it has not already done so. I would never attend, nor encourage, nor support (financically or otherwise) someone to attend any such school.
The very fact that so-called Christians do not hold the Bible to be "being wholly and verbally God-given, Scripture is without error or fault in all its teaching" means those people should not be considered role models for anyone who wants to love God as He said to do.

Church's Seminarys, Colleges and Governments do not have any Authority to upsurp the Holy Word, so, you cannot use it as a basis to put your arguments ahead of the Truth.

Like my nickname says...Love Thy Neighbor. It don't get more plain or easy to follow God's words. They are gay greeting cards people! You don't HAVE to buy them. PERIOD.
No more Hallmark cards for me - I will not be buying them. I have a friend who makes beautiful cards who can help me out. I am extremely disappointed that Hallmark decided to make this anti-Christian choice. I pray they reconsider.

scitsonga, once again I agree with some of what you say, specifically it's really none of my business what people do in the privacy of their home. But when people's sinful behaviors begin to attempt to force me to have to violate my spiritual beliefs then I have to say or do something. Right now in California doctors are being told they can't withold certain non-life threatening services to clients because in providing those services they would be violating their spiritual beliefs. Now what is to stop them from forcing Pastors to perform same-sex marriages and for churches to be forced to allow these marriages to be performed in their sanctuaries. Or what is to keep them from saying Pastors and other Christian teachers and leaders can't speak out against the sexual practices of homosexuality even if they firmly believe the Bible teaches that. Granted they should not be doing this to instigate violence against those in the homosexual community, but in Canada a minister has been charged with a hate crime violation because he spoke against the sin of homosexuality. That is how approving same-sex marriage could impact the lives of Bible believing Christians. Plus to not speak out against same-sex marriage gives the impression that I approve of the sexual practices of homosexuality. But in opposing same-sex marriage I and other Christians must ensure to the best of our ability that we are seen as opposing the sin and not condemning homosexuals as persons.

Living in a free society, there will always be things other people do that we do not like, but as long as ones actions are not hurting others, then it really shouldnt be others business. How would gay marriage affect you? I understand and respect the fact that its against your religion, but your beliefs, or mine, really should have no bearing on how others conduct their lives. I think you have a good heart and are not a person of hate, but there are many people of christian & muslim faiths that use their religion to justify persecution of gays.

To simply stand idly by and allow laws to be passed that in essence legalize sin would be totally inappropriate. But at the same time I agree with you both that it must be done in a way that shows complete respect and regard for those who oppose God's point of view on the issue. And it should be done in such a way that hatemongers cannot use it to justify their hate or acts of hate or that would encourage such acts of hate toward either those who adhere to or support those points of view that are not seen as God's point of view.
Hate is another word sinners are redefining. It used to mean extreme dislike resulting from fear, anger, or a sense of injury. Now it is used to to label someone who lovingly pointing out God's truth.

I speak to all gays and all who believe in what they do to justify themselves, its not easy to deny yourself sometimes, we are so self-willed, wanting what we want apart from God. The gay community claims to be 10% of the population. I've read that it's really 2%. Let Hallmark find out how well it succeeds with 2% of it's business. I feel sorry for the gays. Let them read at Narth.com and get help.
Just like other terms that sinners have co-opted, the term family is being co-opted. The norm has always been a family is made up of a husband, a wife, and children. The exception was when one spouse, or both, had passed away.
Then divorce became the acceptable, and the term was modified to include familial groups where one spouse had divorced the other. Then cohabitation became acceptable, and the term 'significant other' sprang into existence to represent what used to be considered a spouse. Then this was co-opted by the homosexual community. They had already warped the meaning of gay, and now this same group is attempting to warp the meanings of the terms marriage and family.
One group of sin after another is warping our language and our society for the worse.

How is gay marriage "anti-family"? Gay couples adopt children that heterosexuals could not or would not raise. By allowing gay couples to marry, their children are provided with many benefits such as health insurance, Social Security death benefits, inheritance, and the security of a family.
