Younger Generation More Prone to Immoral Behavior, Survey Finds

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

Young adults under 25 are more than twice as likely as all other adults to engage in behaviors considered morally inappropriate by traditional standards, a survey released Monday shows.

Two-thirds (64 percent) of Americans under 25 years old said they used profanity in public, compared to just one out of five Baby Boomers (persons born between post-World War II and the early 1960s), according to The Barna Group survey.

The Baby Boomer generation is known for rebelling against traditional standards of morality.

But the younger generation – known as Mosaics – was nine times more likely than Boomers to have engaged in sex outside of marriage (38 percent vs. 4 percent), six times more likely to have lied (37 percent vs. 6 percent), nearly three times more likely to have gotten drunk (25 percent vs. 9 percent), and twice as likely as Boomers to have watched pornography (33 percent vs. 16 percent).

"We are witnessing the development and acceptance of a new moral code in America," commented George Barna, who directed the survey. "Mosaics have had little exposure to traditional moral teaching and limited accountability for such behavior."

“The moral code began to disintegrate when the generation before them - the Baby Busters - pushed the limits that had been challenged by their parents - the Baby Boomers,” he noted. “The result is that without much fanfare or visible leadership, the U.S. has created a moral system based on convenience, feelings, and selfishness.”

In May, researchers asked a random sample of 1,003 adults across the United States via telephone if they engaged in any of eight behaviors considered morally objectionable during the past week.

The behaviors included exposure to pornography, using profanity in public, gambling, gossiping, engaging in sexual intercourse with someone to whom they were not married, retaliating against someone, getting drunk, and lying.

A majority of adults had engaged in at least one of the behaviors over that past week.

The most common behavior was using profanity in public. About three out of every ten adults (28 percent) admitted to using foul language. The second most popular behavior was gambling (20 percent), which included purchasing a lottery ticket. This was followed by watching pornography (19 percent), gossiping (12 percent), getting drunk (12 percent), and lying (11 percent).

Having sexual intercourse with someone that respondents were not married to (9 percent) and retaliation (8 percent) were the least common behaviors among those surveyed.

When looking at faith identities, evangelicals were the group most likely to adhere to traditional morality while atheists and agnostics were most likely to reject these values.

For evangelicals, profanity (16 percent) and pornography (12 percent) were the most common behaviors. Less than five percent engaged in inappropriate sex (3 percent), gambling (2 percent), lying (1 percent) or drunkenness (less than one-half of one percent).

In contrast, sixty percent of atheists and agnostics used profanity in public, half watched pornography, and a third got drunk over the past week, according to the survey.

"The consistent deterioration of the Bible as the source of moral truth has led to a nation where people have become independent judges of right and wrong, basing their choices on feelings and circumstances,” Barna said. “It is not likely that America will return to a more traditional moral code until the nation experiences significant pain from its moral choices."

When President Bill Clinton set an example of his recreationnal sexual activity before the whole world, younger people followed some of his suggestions. Remember it is ok to plan mind agmes with words. It is ok to lie. It is ok to play sexual games with women who are not your wife. It is ok to use and abuse women for your own gratification. It is ok to betray your wife. It is ok to abuse the power intrusted to you. Did I miss anything?

Young people now believe "oral sex is not having real sex" This has become a HUGE issue!

Not only did our President show the complete world how immoral he was but the basic promise of being faithful to his wife was not worth honnoring, but he faild a very basic trust. He made his wife and daughter ashamed of him, along with a majority of Americans.

We as a nation are paying a price for our untrust worthy leaders. President Clinton joined other in the higest office who also broke the vows to their wives as well.

President Clinton and others will be held accountable by the Lord God Almighty.

John McCain really just said his favorite Daddy Yankee song was the 'Gasolina' song referenced below. I'm no expert, but Gasolina isn't "Gasoline" it's slang for male ejaculate. The women referenced in the song aren't begging for gasoline. If you need proof, see the link in my previous post, but if not, spare yourself.

PS - Obama turned this rapper around when he wanted to endorse him. Yankee Daddy approached Obama's Latino outreach staffers earlier this year about possibly endorsing Obama.

But he didn't pass the vetting - he has an assault charge, and his work is inflammatory and encourages the objectification of women as sex targets, so Obama's aides said they weren't interested in his support. So, apparently, he moved over to McCain.

Here is the latest endorsement that McCain is touting. Yes, if you don't speak Spanish, the song is about what it looks like.

This "Daddy Yankee" rapper also has songs about how Hispanic people should overtake America and destroy its culture.

I do, thankyou wb they are both grown up and at university one is doing film studies the other philosophy with religious studies. Just out of interest some of the ways you describe children I would apply to myself even at my age.

    Best wishes

    Steve

    steveh20,

I wonder if you have children?

I ask because while its helpful to listen to your children, they have to be taught. Its what parents do. Let to their own, they will suffer a lot and will cause unneeder suffering and will fail to be able to interact with society in a meaningful and healthy way.

My children have (at various times) held the views that all vegetables are bad for you, eating all the candy they want is good for you, walking on the roof near the edge is fun and not dangerous, playing in front of on-coming vehicles is something everyone should do, and lying and hitting are good ways of acting.

They have often come to us with expressions that show they are assigning motive to people's behavior without understanding the various possibilties for that behavior.

They have limited, and often flawed, perspectives. They think everyone should think like they do, and sometimes wish to enforce this on others. As parents, we have to help them learn to communicate. We have to help them learn patience of compassion. We have to help them widen their perspectives. We have to help them see that some things are healty, even if they taste bad, and some things are unhealthy even if they taste good. We have to help them learn to be honest and not hurt people. We have to teach them what it is to be adults and to interact with adults. This includes teaching morality.

Perhaps the children will come to agree with me on everything (I doubt it). Perhaps the children will come to disagree with me on everything (I doubt it). But one thing is certain, Children develop their own values that are distinctly different from those of the people they are raised by, though often similar in many areas.

Stephen, I think you should also add, listerning and talking to ones children as well, allowing them to grow their own views even if they disagree with yourself.

This should come as no suprise to anyone. All we as parents can do is teach our children right from wrong and take them to church and get them involved in church activities while they are young.

They might just be following the example of our newest candidate, John McCain. Are we going to endorse sleeping around on your wife, then leaving her for a rich mistress this November? I am worried about the message that sends.

diary, I truly appreciate your honesty as a member of this generation and only wish we babyboomers would have done a better job in teaching your generation with regards to morals and values both in our words and our actions than we did.

    Hernameishope,

Even if what you said was true, that the baby boomers are more immoral than us, it still doesn't make our generation more right. It's like two dirty rags arguing that I'm more clean than you are. The fact of the matter is we're more vocal about it now and think it's not a big issue. Maybe the baby boomers lied when they were surveyed, but that just shows that they knew they were in the wrong. Our generation is more honest about it because we think it's not a big deal. We can play the clean contest as much as we want, but we're all sinners in need of a savior.

Correct me please if I am wrong but has'nt the younger generation always been more prone to imoral behaviour down through the ages?

  • Tue Aug 26, 2008 1:23 pm Agree: 6   Disagree: 0

hernameishope, I tend to believe this survey is pretty accurate. Considering the demise of the family, latch key kids, the access to the internet, lack of standards in the media, availabilty of drugs, secular humanism in the schools and so on, why would anyone be surprised with the results of this survey. But this isn't a generation problem this is the result of what happens when we throw morals and values to the wind in our homes, schools, workplaces, and even in many churches. We are beginning to pay the price of postmodern thinking.

  • Tue Aug 26, 2008 1:13 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 3

I just wanted to bring up a point. That the fact that my generation is more immoral is not quite accurate. I think that the babyboomer generation was a lot more discrete about what they did and a little less in your face. So any survey would be hinging on how honest each generation is going to be. It is not as simple as the article insinuates.
