McLaren Calls World to Wake Up Amid 3 'Frightening' Crises

By Jennifer Gold|Christian Today Reporter

The world “is on a precipice” as it struggles to deal with the three “tremendously frightening crises” of climate change, poverty and war, says Brian McLaren, one of the foremost leaders of the emerging church movement.

“This is our home and it’s fragile and it’s beautiful but it’s also really in danger,” he says in a new short film for Hope08.

The short clip was commissioned by U.K.-based Christian Enquiry Agency and Church Army and launched Wednesday to coincide with the seventh anniversary of September 11 on Thursday.

Turning his attention to the “crisis of poverty” and the “huge gap” between the rich and the poor, McLaren states in the video message, "It’s an unsustainable system when you have a gap like that."

The third crisis, he warns, is the worldwide proliferation of dangerous weapons.

“You take those three crises and you put them together and it tells us that we have to wake up, we can’t just go on with business as usual,” McLaren says.

Yet the popular and sometimes controversial author and speaker still sees cause for hope.

“A friend of mine says there are really only two tribes in this world: there are the haves and the have-nots,” he says. “The hope that we are looking for in the world involves both of them. It involves the have-nots not giving up and it involves the haves learning to care.”

Mclaren shares in the film his personal story of reaching out to his Muslim neighbors in the days following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York by sending a letter and making visits to local mosques to reassure them of his support.

“It took this to make me come and want to introduce myself,” he says of the Sept. 11 attack.

Gareth Squire, director of the Christian Enquiry Agency, believes McLaren is an example of how the Christian faith can impact the world.

"Brian's wider work is very timely, and reminds us that genuine inward personal transformation inevitably leads to transformed decisions and actions, a profound concern for all people everywhere, and a commitment to being part of the solutions the world needs, not its problems," Squire said.

"I'm glad we could make a film that recognizes that Christian faith is a real hope for the present, just as much as it is a solid hope for the future," he added.

Hope Explored is the fourth phase of Hope08, a yearlong initiative of the churches of Britain and Ireland to demonstrate Christian faith in action and to restore hope in communities across the United Kingdom. As part of Hope Explored, churches will spend the autumn inviting people to deepen their understanding of Christianity by taking part in courses explaining the faith.

    Dear Mr. McClaren,
Unfortunately, like most politicians, we have a tendency to deal with symptoms and not the real problems.
So in order, 1) Climate change - There are people on both sides of this issue. there are those that believe that it is man-=made and those that believe that it is cyclical. The real issue is whether we are doing our best to take care of the garden. Pollution is a major problem and needs to be dealt with bi-partisan and trans-national.
    2) Poverty - America is the most generous nation in the world but we are not very good at teaching people to fish as the old saying goes. And the real issue is not the have and have nots. There are only 2 races - those are part of the church (the bride of Christ) and those that are not. Unfortunately, much of the church spend their resources very unwisely. George Barna pointed out that in the last 40 years the church in America has spent billions, if not trillions on facilities, salaries and other just stuff and yet the church numbers continue to dwindle. Perhaps, we as the church in America, needs to get our priorities in line with God's economy and we could do more to help the empoverished and show Jesus to the world.
    3) war and guns - no easy answer except we need to realize that there will be wars and rumors of wars until Jesus comes. We need to get back to the problem and that is hearts that are not belonging to our Lord.
I said all that to say this, go back to basics and not be caught up in distractions. Do whatever the Lord tells you to do in helping to solve these three issues whether it is recycling or riding the bus or speaking out against genocide or contacting your representatives but, abov e all else, pray. Pray for pwople's hearts to be changed because God has called us to love Him above all else and to Love those around us. Are they seeing our Love in Action or are we dealing with only the symptoms.
    Sincerely,
    a fellow believer

The MOST "tremendously frightening" crisis of the 21st century is that there is a catastrophic famine in the land for the Word of God, WORLDWIDE!!!

People are dying without Christ and will end up inthe lake of fire forever. The greatest tragedy mankind can face. And Brian Mclaren is contributing to this famine by not proclaiming the full-orbed, doctrianlly sound, biblical Gospel. He preaches a social gospel which is no gospel at all. Brian Mclaren's day of reckoning is coming. Woe is him. I am not saying those other issues are unimportant, they are important but they are not the most urgent. The preaching of the true gospel is the most important and most urgent issue,

Amos 8:11"Behold, the days are coming," declares the Lord GOD, "when(W) I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, (X) but of hearing the words of the LORD. 12(Y) They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the LORD, (Z) but they shall not find it.

    Y. Amos 8:11

I don't even need to read this article to know whatever came out of McClaren's bald head is heterodox at best and focuses on this world instead of the world to come.

See liberal social gospel with comfy couches.

Frankly, if every Christian started LIVING like a Christian (and yes, I include myself!)I believe God would bless us by healing this Earth. Beloved, pray without ceasing, and love your neighbor! And remember how Jesus taught is in the parable of the Good Samaritan.

"To pretend that we can do anything to change the earth's temperature is like a flock of Canadian Geese trying to change the atmospheric pressure to gain extra-momentum."

Tell me seed what you understand about the hetronuclear molecule carbon dioxide, it will help me to better understand your statement.

    Many thanks

Isn't it amazing that he left out the most devastating crisis of all, the crisis of lostness in throughout our nation and world.

Notice how the global warming hesterics have been toned down as of late? I wonder if it has anything to do with the cold trend. Hmmm.

To pretend that we can do anything to change the earth's temperature is like a flock of Canadian Geese trying to change the atmospheric pressure to gain extra-momentum.

Maybe a better resourt would be to hire a mad scientist off a recent movie set to kill all the cows (they produce gas when they burp), all of the termites (they produce more carbon than humans) and then knock off the entire human race (maybe this is secretly why the libs protested against spraying Africa to protect the people from Malaria).

Anyway, I thought the emergent church didn't like to judge other people??? Doesn't he know that it's not culturally acceptable. I guess that makes him a lib 'of the cloth.'

and what should we do when we "wake up" regarding "climate change"? Should we pray we don't enter an ice age? I'm confused as to how climate change fits in with the proliferation of weapons and poverty - the latter we can do something about, but the weather is the weather - unless of course you believe some of the poor science regarding CO2 emissions - but that would require quite a bit of faith (the science certainly doesn't back it up).
