Anti-Christian Violence in Orissa Threatens to Spread

By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter

Thousands of Christians in Orissa state have witnessed their homes, businesses and churches destroyed and torched over the past few weeks, but the violence that has refused to subside may soon spread to other parts of India, warned a persecution watchdog group.

Hindu extremists, who are behind the violence in Orissa, may spread their fierce anti-Christian sentiment throughout India ahead of the country’s general election, fears U.K.-based Barnabas Fund.

In the northern state of Uttarakhand, Hindu activists reportedly attacked a group of Indian missionaries in early August, the ministry pointed out.

Then on Aug. 20 in the southern state of Karnataka, Hindu radicals were said to beat up an evangelists.

And earlier this month, a group of Hindus abducted four young children who were being escorted to a Christian orphanage and beat up the two staff from the sponsoring organization.

Also, an 86-year-old church in central India was burned down on Sept. 7.

Gospel for Asia, a mission group working in India and other south Asia countries, said Hindu mobs raided churches and prayer centers in Karnataka state, attacking Christians during worship services on Sunday.

The extremists then destroyed church buildings and their properties. In total, at least 11 churches were destroyed in the southern state, including at least one led by Gospel for Asia missionaries.

"India is in a scary situation," said GFA president K.P. Yohannan, in a statement Monday. "While violence continues in Orissa, on India's east coast, anti-Christian extremists have unleashed another wave of attacks on Christians in Karnataka, a state on India's west coast.

"At the same time, churches are under attack in Jharkhand and other states, and Muslim extremists have set off bombs in Delhi.”

Violence broke out in the remote eastern state of Orissa after a Hindu political leader, known for his anti-Christian conversion campaigns, was murdered. Police had initially blamed Maoist rebels for the murder, and the rebels themselves have claimed responsibility.

But Hindu radicals refuse to believe the rebels are behind the attack and continue to blame Christians for the death of their leader. While relations between the small Christian population and Hindus have been generally peaceful, Orissa has been plagued by religious tensions between Christian missionaries and hard-line Hindu groups who claim the Christians are forcing or bribing people to convert, as reported by The Associated Press.

“The shocking outbreak of violence against Christians in Orissa draws our attention to the persecution faced by many Indian Christians,” said Dr. Patrick Sookhdeo, international director of Barnabas Fund. “There is a grave danger that this will intensify in various places as the national elections approach.

“We pray that Christ will give peace and strength to believers throughout the country and enable them to respond to hostility with love and forgiveness.”

Barnabas Fund has been providing aid to Christians in Orissa since the violent campaign against believers last Christmas. The ministry says it fears hard-line groups, some linked to pro-Hindu political parties, will use the May 2009 election to mobilize support.

The anti-Christian attacks are said to be the worst in the 60 years of India’s independence. Since the violence erupted some three weeks ago, the death toll has risen to 25.

"...death toll has risen to 25"??? That's the understatement of the year! Our great poet Tagore wrote, "Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high..." Now in 60 years of independence maybe its bout time to rewrite it as "Where the minds are filled with fear and the heads are chopped off!"

If it is about to happen in India, think what ill you do if India government thinks about banning pentacostal mission[ which is the root cause hurting Hindu sentiments] in America!! Dont be oversmart. Love peace and look for solution. Dont just play blame games.

    Dear all,
dont just put things blindly.I know whats happening in India. Lot of Christians are there in India. They all are peace loving. But some sections of Christians behave differently. Even Other Christians dont like these group. You all must understand that there wont be any violence without any trigger.

Just go through the below mentioned points and validate its credibility

    Basically Hindus respect other religions.
Almost all Christians are peace loving.

Hindu violence is there in India but Why? and aganist whom?
Who is giving them a cause to do this?
Are these so called Hindu violent groups clashing with all Christians???
Accord to my knowledge, there are some sections in Christianity.
A very Few are, catholics, marthoma, jocobite pentacost etc.
Out of these , only pentacostal sections face attacks Why?
Why Hindu groups do not attack othe groups. There must be some reason.
Thats because the other group doesnt want to indulge in another religions belief.
they also belive in christianity, but one must say the way of life led by pentacosts are different.
Jesus tells us to love everybody help poor, But Jesus never says they must be conversted to Christianity.
Pentacostal pastors are roaming arond the hospitals, relief camps to "help" the poor. Problem arises when they say "the God in which you believe is not proper. Thats why u face these problems. Jesus is there fo u , Follow us so that u can reach God" That is true. BUT the problem comes when the person hits back like "I have my faith in my own religion I love my GOd" . The next step taken by the pastors[pentacost only] would be comparison of Gods of both the religion. lots of WHY ur God...., WHAT ur God....,HOW ur God.... questions from the pastors side. The person may blink at these questions and he may act in different ways. Some may understand and agree those words[ will become a christian forever],Some may not hear those words continue to stay with their base religion,Some may convert and later understand there is no change in his life[so he come back to his base religion].And the people who are getting "forcibly" converted gets a different treatment from the family as well as from the relatives.
Can any body answer my question now.

    Read below post first.
For missionaries in India,There are international funds flowing in. If the mission of the missonaries is to help poor and not to convert them or not to expand its faith, then can these missionaties give these funds to government and administrate the activities via a committee. So that there wont be any religion coming in between. And peace exists. Leave apart the possibility. But do u agree with this???????????

please mind that Hindus also have faith and Gods like Christians and respect them. Give respect and earn respect.NOM

It is time that United States government takes a close view on its ethical relations with India and press upon to ban outfits like Bajrang Dal etc. Christians in India have been relatively peaceful community, I am afraid about the emergence of radicalism if violence against them is not controlled.

Unlike Muslims and Sikhs, we do not want Indian Christians to take the path of extremes in their security. I hope senses prevail with the authorities in Orissa and Karnatakaya.
