'Supermajority' of NAE Leaders Know Who to Vote For, Survey Finds

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

An overwhelming majority of NAE leaders say they have already made up their minds on who they will vote for in the November election, found a survey out this week.

More than three-quarters (82 percent) of the National Association of Evangelicals’ board members have decided who they want to be the next president, according to the September NAE Evangelical Leaders Survey (ELS).

The remaining respondents, 18 percent, say they are still undecided.

But all respondents said they plan to vote in this year’s presidential election.

The NAE noted that it was the first time in the history of the ELS that there was 100 percent agreement among respondents.

“Reporters have repeatedly asked me if Evangelicals will sit out the 2008 presidential election and not cast votes,” said Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals. “My instinct and observation was that Evangelicals would not fail to vote no matter who became the candidates.”

The 100 members of the NAE board of directors were asked “Are you going to vote?” and “Have you decided who to vote for?” but stopped short of asking specifically the candidate of choice.

Among the respondents who said they are undecided, one explained that, “I find things to commend and serious concerns with both tickets and platforms.”

“While I have leaned toward John McCain, I do not believe his selection for vice president has the experience needed to be one heart beat away from the presidency, particularly with a 72 year old president. So I remain undecided,” the evangelical leader said.

In contrast, another evangelical leader said that since Sarah Palin, who was a member of the Assemblies of God denomination, is on the presidential ticket, the person will vote for Republican John McCain.

The Assemblies of God is a member denomination of the National Association of Evangelicals.

“In a year when there has been broader debate about which way the Evangelical vote will go, there should be no doubt that the Evangelical vote will not diminish,” Anderson concluded. “Evangelicals are going to show up at the polls in large numbers on November 4.”

The Evangelical Leaders Survey is a monthly questionnaire to 100 members of the NAE board of directors that includes heads of evangelical denominations with about 45,000 local churches, executives of para-church organizations and colleges, as well as a limited number of individual evangelicals who hold at-large seats.

To blue 1018, sorry to disagree but again, the point you make about abortion "always" being with us is the exact same point the Southern states tried to make concerning slavery in the 19th century. Likewise, they attempted to use legislation and the courts to protect and entrench that horrendous institution, which was just as lucrative for individuals back then as abortion is for Planned Parenthood, abortion clinics and abortion providers today. The victory over slavery proves even something as entrenched as abortion can be defeated. It will take a continued effort on the part of Christians to accomplish that, however, just as it did with slavery. History does repeat itself.

As one who supports abortion by helping tp pass laws that further that sin, might just as well perform the abortion themselves.

Doctors, Nurses, women and the men who encourage abortion, will all stand before God and Give account as a " Partaker of that sin."

Abortion is a number one Issue with me, and that is because how can we ask God to deliver this Nation from it's enemies as long as we are slaughtering millions of babies every year.

How can we expect God to help us in other area's of National Interest when we as a Nation have no more respect for life than to treat innocent unborn babies like a piece of trash.

First things first. our politions don't have the political courage to stop this type of murder. but make no mistake about it, " One day abortion will be Illegal " and it won't be long.

The true history and reality of our time is that abortion will NEVER be illegal on a federal level and Roe v. Wade will NEVER be overturned. There is so much legal, historical, social, economic and precedent basis for this position. Every single law professor I had agreed. Whether the next justices are pro-life or pro-choice does not matter at all because it would be an absolutely dangerous decision for the Court to flip-flop the abortion debate for years and years based on politics. Simply put, abortion is here to stay whether a candidate supports or opposes it. And also, just because a candidate is pro-choice doesn't mean he personally aborts a baby or personally throws away the fetus. HE does not make the decision! I wouldn't say 'get over it' because that would invoke a moral argument, but bottom line is religious voters should not be stuck on this issue! What if McCain was a socialist, a racist, an adulterer (wait.. he is), a hothead, an atheist but oh! - pro-life. Would you still vote for him? (I hope not) There are so many more important issues at stake in this election than using the old pro-life argument: I am sick of feeding more and more people at the food shelter while prices go up. I am sick of seeing more death from war on the television. And I am so sick of corporate greed over helpless families..

And rocky, your ignorant, uninformed comments purely shows your discriminative tone.

There are two things to consider here. The first, of course, is the abortion issues. Many non-Christians are against abortion. Therefore, a true Christian could NEVER be for abortion. A true Christian could NEVER support anyone (Christian or not) who supports it. Would a Christian support killing a baby two days after birth? I think not. The second issue is more subtle. Only one of the candidates has given a clear concise statement (especially at the Saddleback Forum) as to his personal salvation in Jesus Christ alone. That person is John McCain. He attends a Baptist Church that teachers salvation by grace alone through faith alone. Hussein Obama uses the term "Christian" in a generic sense, attends a church that supports homosexual marriage AND abortion and does not recognize the Deity of Christ. It is a pantheistic congregation. In addition, IF he had become a Christian, he would no longer carry the name Hussein as that is a Muslim name and Muslims seek the execution of anyone leaving the Muslim faith. It is clear he is no Christian in the biblical sense. He is just lucky to live in a Christian nation. Also, if he were a Christian, why does he allow his own brother to live in a hut in African making about a dollar a month and admits he has never helped him financially. A Christian conservative group is raising money to help him obtain a mechanics' education which he wants desperately. Enough for Hussein's statement about helping the poor. He won't even help his own family. He belongs in hell!

Sorry, but I don't find it "sad" at all that evangelical Christians see abortion as either the #1 or close-to-#1 issue. Murder of unborn babies, under the protection and approval of the government, epitomizes the moral degradation of our culture and society. That degradation has spilled over into every other aspect of culture. Some would claim it is a lightning rod issue. So be it. Slavery was a lightning rod issue in a previous century and it amazes me, truly amazes me, how all the arguments being used to promote and defend abortion are almost word-for-word the same as the arguments used to promote and defend slavery. It took the churches & evengelical Christians back then to eliminate slavery; it will take the churches and evengelical Christians today to eliminate abortion.

It is incredibly sad how even 'Christians' put the pro-life issue over EVERY OTHER SOCIAL ISSUE OF OUR TIME. Forget the poor who will continue to live miserable lives under Republican politics; forget the innocent Iraqis and Muslims who are killed or captured because of a stupid ideological war; forget deregulation which puts corporations over individuals; forget minority rights because peoples' discrimination means more than social protection; forget that ol' silly doctrine of separation of church and state; forget it all! just vote pro-life, and the world will get better!
    Please..

Hi everybody. I agree that we should vote our values. But as Christians our values shoild be Bible based.

If that is not the case, then our values come from the world, and it is plain to see where the world is heading.

Bible based values are very Important. And sad, but much of what calls itself the church has departed from values that are based on Thus Saith The Lord.

hypo. Since abortion is the murder of unborn babies, How about Exodus 20:13 which says, " Thou shalt not kill."

How about Proverbs 6:16 where a list of things God hates includes " Hands that shed innocent Blood."

Something tells me this won't mean much to you. Abortion is the killing of Innocent Babies, and like it or not, God will judge those who commit this sin.

"But since there is a clear cut choice for a Pro-Life canidate, The choice seems very clear to me which way the Church should vote."

Hymm... so umm.. where is that verse in the bible that says "against abortion" (which is different from TRUE PRO-LIFE), is some how more legitimate than ADULTERY (which the Lord speaks a whole lot about)? I missed those verses that said vote for the one who is "pro-life" (from man's sinful point of view) but disregard the one who says "all roads lead to God" (which is damnable heresy and yet Evangelicals ran lock stick and barrel to BUSH who blasphemes God daily).

Hypocrites R Us is the name American Evangelicalism.

If both candidates were pro-choice I could understand the " choose the lesser of the two evils pick."

But since there is a clear cut choice for a Pro-Life canidate, The choice seems very clear to me which way the Church should vote.

And I believe that the portion of church which votes for a Pro-abortion candidate will become partaker in that sin.

We are forbidden in Scripture from being a partaker of other men's sin. There will be Inocent blood on the hands of those christians.
