MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The nation's largest group of atheists and agnostics is suing President Bush, the governor of Wisconsin and other officials over the federal law designating a National Day of Prayer.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation sued Friday in U.S. district court, arguing that the president's mandated proclamations calling on Americans to pray violates a constitutional ban on government officials endorsing religion.
The day of prayer, held each year on the first Thursday of May, creates a "hostile environment for nonbelievers, who are made to feel as if they are political outsiders," the lawsuit said.
The national proclamation issued this year asked God's blessings on our country and called for Americans to observe the day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.
Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle is named in the suit because he is one of 50 governors who issued proclamations calling for the prayer day. The foundation is based in Madison.
Shirley Dobson, chairwoman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, and White House press secretary Dana Perino also are named.
The foundation has filed numerous lawsuits in recent years, including one rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court last year that attacked President Bush's faith-based initiative.
The White House and Doyle spokesman Lee Sensenbrenner had no comment on the lawsuit. A message seeking comment from the task force was not returned Friday.

Like this will stop us from having a National Day of Prayer anyways. Frankly in some ways this may be a good thing in that it would remove the possibility of any political agenda on the part of the event or the participants with regards to the prayer activities that are held in honor of this event, it would just be people meeting for the sole purpose of praying for our country and its' leaders.
Since you liked it so much here's another: "Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for He judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on His head were many crowns. A name was written on Him that no one understood except Himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and His title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed Him on white horses. From His mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. On His robe at His thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords." (Rev 19:11-16)
Actually, I would have cut and paste from the things you said but you didn't seem to be saying anything worth repeating. Maybe next time. God bless you!
Totally brilliant pw, you can cut and paste scripture.....
"...upon this rock (which is faith) I will build My church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. And I will give you (the one with faith in God) the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven." (Mat 16:18-19)
The gates of hell will not prevail against the those who have faith in Jesus, the Son of God. There is nothing to fear from the Atheists, Agnostics, or anyone who opens their mouths against belief in God.
"Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the LORD and against His anointed one. "Let us break their chains," they cry, "and free ourselves from slavery to God." But the One who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. Then in anger He rebukes them, terrifying them with His fierce fury. For the Lord declares, "I have placed My chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, on My holy mountain." The king proclaims the LORD's decree: "The LORD said to me, 'You are My son. Today I have become your Father. Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession. You will break them with an iron rod and smash them like clay pots.'" Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth! Serve the LORD with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling. Submit to God's royal son, or He will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activitiesâ€â€for His anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him!" (Psa 2:1-12)
Amen.
artm: I can see you are not a true christian
Recall what jesus said Matthew 5:22 "...but whoever shall say, thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire". A true christian would not have ignored the words of christ. It's so easy to spot the ex-christians and atheists trying to bring our kingdom down.
oh dear, oh dear ,jer....
Surely a person's "prayer" could simply be the rhetorical verbalisation of hopes for purpose of self-motivation? Or, for the radicals amongst us, it could mean talking to God.
Free will: the manifestation of God's love for atheists.
I will be praying for God to deliver this Nation from it's enemies. The fool has said in his heart there is no God.
The group that brought the law suit should be heavily fined for tying up the courts with a frivolous law suit!
As long as we have in God We Trust as a motto it would be foolish to not talk to him, eh?
"appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities."
This means for each American to observe the day as their beliefs say. Interesting that no where does it order anyone to pray or did it endorse an establishment of religion. Unfortunately, these athiests want to ignore the Constitution.
Maybe they should ask for their own day...they can call it the we believe in nothing day.
Yeah, national day of prayer, how ridiculous....That is what you meant?
Sounds like some people need to get a life!
