Eating Right Can Help You Fight Stress

By Dr. Reginald B. Cherry, M.D.|Christian Post Contributor

Are you often stressed out? If so, you might be relieved to know that eating foods that are high in minerals and antioxidants can actually help fuel the body throughout the day and reduce stress, according to Allison Krause, a registered dietitian at Ohio State University.

"We know that glucose fuels the brain and gives you energy, so I think foods can definitely boost your mood and improve your performance throughout the day," says Krause. She offers these stress-fighting tips:

Eat small, frequent meals five to six times a day; and don't skip meals.

Include foods that contain B vitamins, calcium, zinc, magnesium and potassium, which can give you an edge over stress. (Eating mixed greens is a great way to pack in the minerals.)

Combine complex carbohydrates with protein to fuel you body. For example, eat a whole-wheat bagel with cream cheese or an apple with peanut butter.

Drink milk. It's an excellent stress buster. It has magnesium and potassium - minerals that help keep blood pressure down. Milk is also a great source of calcium, which helps to relax muscle.

Eat about four ounces of fish or a small handful of nuts - both have been shown to not only help prevent heart disease but to reduce your risk of depression and irritability as well.

Finally, the American Dietetic Association recommends that you take time out for a healthy breakfast before you start your day. It will help you prepare for a busy schedule and lower your stress level.
